Cognitive training elicits mild-to-moderate improvements in cognitive functioning in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS), although response heterogeneity limits overall effectiveness.

Eighty-two PwMS were randomized into a 7-week attention training (<i>n</i> = 58, age = 48.4 ± 10.2 years) or a waiting-list control group (<i>n</i> = 24, age = 48.5 ± 9.4 years). Structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was obtained at baseline and post-intervention. However, non-responders exhibited a higher baseline functional connectivity (FC) between the default-mode network (DMN) and the ventral attention network (VAN), compared with responders (<i>p</i> = 0.018) and HCs (<i>p</i> = 0.001). Conversely, responders exhibited no significant baseline differences in FC compared with HCs. Response to cognitive training was predicted by lower DMN-VAN FC (<i>p</i> = 0.004) and DMN-frontoparietal FC (<i>p</i> = 0.029) (Nagelkerke <i>R</i><sup>2</sup> = 0.25).

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is an inflammatory disease characterized by chronic obstruction and infection. This pathology is a life-threatening condition when surgical treatment is carried out. We decided to retrospectively evaluate whether there were perioperative factors that predict complications in patients who undergo nephrectomy.

We reviewed all nephrectomies done in the period of 2013-2018, in a tertiary referral Hospital with the histopathological diagnosis of Xanthogranulomatous Pyelonephritis.

To explore lived experiences of patients recovering from COVID-19-associated intensive care unit acquired weakness and to provide phenomenological descriptions of their recovery.

A qualitative study following hermeneutic phenomenology.

Through purposeful sampling, 13 participants with COVID-19-associated intensive care unit acquired weakness were recruited with diversity in age, sex, duration of hospitalization and severity of muscle weakness. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted from 4 to 8 months after hospital discharge, between July 2020 and January 2021. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using hermeneutic phenomenological analysis.

The analysis yielded five themes 'waking up in alienation', 'valuing human contact in isolation', 'making progress by being challenged', 'coming home but still recovering' and 'finding a new balance'. The phenomenological descriptions reflect a recovery process that does not follow a linear build-up, but comes with moments of success, setb optimized care delivery and meeting patients' needs in this pandemic or a possible next.

The aim of the present study was to analyse oocytes in terms of quality and quantity by comparing the entire pool of oocytes per ovary, with those from the antral follicles within the same animal. We performed Brilliant Cresyl Blue staining as a non-invasive marker of oocyte quality in combination with an analysis of additional morphological indicators, e.g. cytoplasm clarity, cumulus cell layers, nuclear anatomy, size and shape. The aim of the present study was to examine associations of depression and fatigue with discrepancies between subjective and objective cognitive functioning in pwMS. 177 participants with MS attending a University Hospital Department of Neurology MS Outpatient clinic completed the Brief International Cognitive Assessment for MS (BICAMS), MS Neuropsychological Questionnaire (MSNQ), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS). To quantify the discrepancy between objective (BICAMS) and subjective (MSNQ) cognitive functioning, discrepancy scores were calculated by subtracting MSNQ z-score from composite BICAMS z-score. Based on their discrepancy score, participants were grouped as 'Underestimated', 'Overestimated' and 'Non-discrepant'. 39% of the total sample demonstrated poorer subjective cognitive functioning than their objective cognitive performance suggested ('Underestimated'). 23% of the total sample indicated lower objective scores than their subjective report suggests ('Overestimated'). 38% participants indicated relatively no discrepancy between objective and subjective cognitive measures ('Non-discrepant'). Significant differences were observed between the discrepancy groups in terms of depression and fatigue, with the 'Underestimated' group demonstrating greater levels of depression and fatigue (ps  less then  .01). Regression analysis indicated that cognitive fatigue and depression significantly contributed to variance in subjective cognitive functioning. In optics, fluorescent proteins enable understanding of molecular and cellular functions in biological systems due to their multiplexed imaging capability. Here, a panel of GVs is investigated using mid-band fit (MBF) spectral imaging to realize multiplexed ultrasound imaging to uniquely visualize locations of different types of stationary GVs. The MBF spectral imaging technique demonstrates that stationary clustered GVs are efficiently localized and distinguished from unclustered GVs in agarose gel phantom and 3D vessel structures are visualized in ex vivo mouse liver specimens. Mouse macrophages serve as carriers of clustered and unclustered GVs and multiplexing beacons to report cells' spatial locations by emitting distinct spectral signals. 2D MBF spectral images are reconstructed, and pixels in these images are classified depending on MBF values by comparing predetermined filters that predict the existence of cells with clustered and unclustered GVs. This pseudo-coloring scheme clearly distinguishes the locations of two classes of cells like pseudo-color images in fluorescence microscopy.

With widespread adoption of antiretroviral therapy, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemiology has changed since the late 2000s. Accordingly, attitudes towards the disease may also have changed. Because medical students are future physicians, their attitudes have important implications in access to care among patients with HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Here, we performed a survey to compare medical students' attitudes towards HIV/AIDS between the late 2000s (2007-2010) and middle 2010s (2014- 2017).

From 2007 to 2010, we surveyed three cohorts of medical students at the end of clinical training to assess their attitudes towards HIV/AIDS. From 2014 to 2017, we surveyed three additional cohorts of medical students at the end of clinical training to compare changes in attitudes towards HIV/AIDS between the late 2000s and middle 2010s. Each set of three cohorts was grouped together to maximise sample size; comparisons were performed between the 2007-2010 and 2014-2017 cohorts.

From 2007 to 2010, 546 medical students were surveyed; from 2014 to 2017, 504 students were surveyed. Compared with students in the late 2000s, significantly fewer students in the mid-2010s initially encountered patients with HIV during attachment to an HIV clinic or preferred to avoid work in a field involving HIV/AIDS; significantly more students planned to specialise in HIV medicine. Student willingness to provide HIV care remained similar over time approximately 78% of students were willing to provide care in each grouped cohort.
