CP epithelial cells are considered the site of the internal blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier, show epithelial characteristics (basal lamina, tight junctions), and express aquaporin-1 (AQP1) apically. In this study, we analyzed the expression of aquaporins in the human CP using immunofluorescence and qPCR. As previously reported, AQP1 was expressed apically in CP epithelial cells. Surprisingly, and previously unknown, many cells in the CP epithelium were also positive for aquaporin-4 (AQP4), normally restricted to ventricle-lining ependymal cells and astrocytes in the brain. Expression of AQP1 and AQP4 was found in the CP of all eight body donors investigated (3 males, 5 females; age 74-91). These results were confirmed by qPCR, and by electron microscopy detecting orthogonal arrays of particles. To find out whether AQP4 expression correlated with the expression pattern of relevant transport-related proteins we also investigated expression of NKCC1, and Na/K-ATPase. Immunostaining with NKCC1 was similar to AQP1 and revealed no particular pattern related to AQP4. Co-staining of AQP4 and Na/K-ATPase indicated a trend for an inverse correlation of their expression. We hypothesized that AQP4 expression in the CP was caused by age-related changes. To address this, we investigated mouse brains from young (2 months), adult (12 months) and old (30 months) mice. We found a significant increase of AQP4 on the mRNA level in old mice compared to young and adult animals. This network meta-analysis (NMA) assessed the antiplaque and anti-inflammatory efficacy of different sugar-free chewing gums (SFCG) as adjuncts to toothbrushing.

PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, and CENTRAL databases were searched up to February 2021 to identify randomized controlled trials, involving adults, comparing antiplaque and anti-inflammatory effects of SFCG, with different active ingredients, as adjunctive to mechanical control of biofilm, with a minimum of 7-day of follow-up. Plaque and gingival indexes were assessed. The risk of bias assessment was performed with the RoB 2.0 tool. NMA, and pairwise meta-analyses were performed for both dental plaque and gingival indexes.

We assessed overall hearing outcome after tympanoplasty type III in chronically infected ears with cholesteatoma (CH) and without cholesteatoma otitis media chronica mesotympanalis, tympanosclerosis, and adhesive process (COM_T_AP).

303 surgeries were evaluated 229 CH-group and 74 COM_T_AP-group. Air-bone gaps (PTA-ABG) with pure-tone averages (PTA-4) at four frequencies (0.5, 1, 2 and 4kHz) were compared preoperatively, early postoperatively (< 40days) and late postoperatively (40-400days). Hearing outcome was compared in various types of middle-ear reconstruction and in smokers and non-smokers. Correlations between hearing outcome and predictive staging indices were evaluated Middle Ear Risk-Index (MER-I) and Ossiculoplasty Outcome Parameter Staging-Index (OOPS-I).

Mean PTA-ABG in the CH-group increased from 20.9 ± 11.3dB to 22.3 ± 10.4dB early postoperatively and decreased significantly to 19.2 ± 10.1dB late postoperatively. The use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is often limited in patients with auditory implants because of the presence of metallic components and magnets. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical usefulness of a customized MRI sequence for metal artifact suppression in patients with BONEBRIDGETM BCI 602 implants (MED-EL, Innsbruck, Austria), the successor of the BCI 601 model.

Using our in-house developed and customized metal artifact reduction sequence (SEMAC-VAT WARP), MRI artifacts were evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively. MRI sequences were performed with and without artifact reduction on two whole head specimens with and without the BCI 602 implant. In addition, the influence of two different implantation sites (mastoid versus retrosigmoid) and head orientation on artifact presence was investigated.

Artifact volume was reduced by more than the 50%. Results were comparable with those obtained with the BCI 601, showing no significant differences in the dimensions of artifacts caused by the implant.

So far, there are no quantifiable biomarkers to aid clinical subtyping. Neurofilament light chain (NfL) is a highly specific marker of neuro-axonal damage and can be assessed in blood. Here, we investigated if serum NfL concentrations are associated with PIGD subtype and PIGD scores in PD patients at advanced disease stages. Furthermore, we evaluated if serum NfL is associated with motor and cognitive function assessed with MDS-UPDRS part III and Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA). Serum NfL levels were analyzed with Single Molecule Assays (Simoa) in blood of 223 PD patients from the bioMARKers in Parkinson's Disease (MARK-PD) study. Serum NfL concentrations were higher in PIGD patients independent of age, sex and disease duration. In linear regression analysis, serum NfL levels were associated with MoCA, MDS-UPDRS III and PIGD scores in unadjusted models, but remained significant after adjustment only with PIGD scores. This work collected the river water samples from Zhujiang River (the largest river in South China) to investigate the concentration, fractionation, and environmental implication of dissolved REE. The total dissolved REE (∑REE) concentrations are similar in different seasons. In mid-lower reaches, the REE concentrations tend to increase corresponding to low pH, and the normalized ratios of lanthanum (La) to ytterbium (Yb) are higher, suggesting weak fractionation between light REE and heavy REE. Compared to the previous study in 2000, the higher samarium (Sm) and europium (Eu) concentrations are most likely influenced by stronger water/particle interaction. But it is essential to identify each child's individual risk profile as it determines secondary prevention, risk of recurrence and outcome. Long-term care in a multiprofessional, interdisciplinary team must take into account the bio-psycho-social aspects to integrate the child into its social and educational, and later professional environment.
