Furthermore, the level of antioxidant agents (superoxide dismutase and reduced glutathione), mitochondrial biogenesis factors (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha and mitochondrial transcription factor A), and dynamics markers (Mitofusin 2, dynamic related protein 1, PTEN induced putative kinase-1, and parkin) increased in both mentioned groups. Interestingly our results also revealed that the majority of the mitochondrial factors increased in the frontal and parietal lobes, which may be in relation with the location of motor and sensory areas. Exercise can be used as a prophylactic approach against bioenergetics and mitochondrial dysfunction. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of vaginal fractional CO2 laser therapy for female sexual dysfunction (FSD). A total of 84 women at high risk of sexual dysfunction were randomly divided into two groups. Women in the laser group received vaginal fractional CO2 laser therapy. Others in the Kegel group were advised to participate in Kegel exercise training. Sexual distress and sexual function were evaluated by using the Female Sexual Distress Scale-Revised (FSDS-R) and the Chinese version Female Sexual Function Index (CVFSFI), respectively. selleck products Adverse events were recorded during the 12-month follow-up. At the end of the 6th and 12th months, the lubrication scores of the CVFSFI in the laser group (4.55±0.05, 4.58±0.09) were significantly higher than those in the Kegel group (4.19±0.15, 4.20±0.14) (P less then 0.05). The satisfaction scores in the laser group (4.43±0.08) were higher than those in the Kegel group (4.20±0.16) at the end of the 6th month (P less then 0.05). The self-contrast test in the laser group showed significant improvement in lubrication, pain, satisfaction and total scores after CO2 laser therapy (p less then 0.05). These improvements were maintained for 1 year. The improvement of FSDS-R in the laser group (10.0±0.2) was more evident than in the Kegel group (11.1±0.4) at the end of the 12th month. There were no major adverse events reported during laser therapy. Vaginal fractional CO2 laser therapy can effectively improve sexual function without any serious adverse events. It might be an effective and relatively safe treatment option for improving vaginal mucosa status in sexually active women with sexual dysfunction.
To report the long-term outcomes of Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) for bullous keratopathy secondary to argon laser iridotomy (BK-ALI).
Retrospective chart review.
Forty-five eyes from 41 consecutive patients with BK-ALI who underwent DSAEK from July 2007 to December 2013 were retrospectively analyzed. Best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), endothelial cell density (ECD), and any complications were investigated over a 10-year postoperative period.
The mean BCVA improved from 0.80 logMAR before DSAEK to 0.28 logMAR at 6months after DSAEK; the mean values showed an additional slight improvement between 6months and 10years after the surgery (P < .01). The mean ECD decreased from 2864 cells/mm
at baseline to 2269 cells/mm
(20.8% loss) at 6months post-DSAEK, and this decreasing trend continued throughout the 10years after DSAEK (P < .01). The mean ECD was 1148 cells/mm
(59.9% loss) after 5years, and 568 cells/mm
(80.2% loss) after 10years. No graft deaths were observed throughout the 10-year period (5-year follow-up rate 60.0%, 10-year follow-up rate 20.0%).
The 10-year outcomes of DSAEK for BK-ALI were excellent with a high graft survival rate.
The 10-year outcomes of DSAEK for BK-ALI were excellent with a high graft survival rate.Motivation is an important factor in encouraging individuals to attend rehabilitation and underpins many approaches to engagement. The aims of this study were to develop an accurate model able to predict individual intention to engage in outpatient cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs based on the first stage of the Model of Therapeutic Engagement integrated into a socio-environmental context. The cross-sectional study in the cardiology ward of an Australian hospital included a total of 217 individuals referred to outpatient CR. Through an ordinal logistic regression, the effect of random forest (RF)-selected profile features on individual intention to engage in outpatient CR was explored. The RF based on the conditional inference trees predicted the intention to engage in outpatient CR with high accuracy. The findings highlighted the significant roles of individuals' 'willingness to consider the treatment', 'perceived self-efficacy' and 'perceived need for rehabilitation' in their intention, while the involvement of 'barriers to engagement' and 'demographic and medical factors' was not evident. In soil and plant tissues, the concentrations and reserves of manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), and lead (Pb) were calculated to measure the heavy metal quantities of the Scots pine afforestation. In the soil and plant tissues, heavy metal concentrations varied. The highest concentration of heavy metal was found in Mn and the lowest concentration in Pb in the soil. Heavy metal stocks followed the order of Mn > Zn > Ni > Cu > Pb in soil, and the order of Zn > Cu > Mn > Ni > Pb in the plant. In the Scots pine parts, Pb and Zn concentrations and BCFs follow Needle > Branch > Bark > Root > Trunk order, while Cu concentrations follow Root > Needle > Branch > Bark > Trunk order, Mn concentrations follow Needle > Branch > Bark > Trunk > Root order and Ni concentrations follow Needle > Branch > Root > Bark > Trunk order. In particular, Scots pine needles are considered to be ideal to be used as biomonitoring plants, especially in monitoring increases in heavy metal concentrations in urban areas. Besides, in order to be more effective in the retaining of heavy metals, it is proposed that mixtures of hyperaccumulator plants be added which are appropriate for climatic conditions. This study aimed to analyze the cold stress effects (in terms of hematology, energy reserves, and oxidative stress) in Piaractus mesopotamicus (pacú) and their mitigation by a Pyropia columbina red seaweed-supplemented diet. For this purpose, juvenile fish were fed with a control (CD) or a red seaweed-supplemented diet (RD) for 60 days, and then, the animals were exposed to a low temperature (14 °C) and a control temperature (24 °C) for 24 h. The cold shock generated an increase of hemoglobin levels in fish fed with both diets. In CD-fed fish, plasmatic triglycerides, cholesterol, and hepatic glycogen decreased after the thermal shock; meanwhile, the animals fed with RD showed decreased hepatic proteins, but increased cholesterol and hepatic glycogen. Regarding oxidative stress, antioxidant enzymes augmented their activity in the liver, intestine, and gills; meanwhile, lipid oxidative damage was observed in the liver and intestine of fish exposed to 14 °C and fed with both diets. Pacú was sensitive to cold shock, but no mitigation effects were observed in fish fed with the supplemented diet.
