Multivitamin syrups and effervescent tablets are commonly used for dietary support in children; however, these preparations may have detrimental effects on the surface of restorative materials. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two multivitamin syrups and two effervescent tablets taken daily on the surface microhardness and roughness of two different restorative materials.

The study groups were comprised of a conventional glass ionomer cement, Ketac Molar, and a giomer, Beautifil II. A total of 140 disc-shaped specimens were prepared and randomly assigned to 5 subgroups. The samples were immersed in 4 multivitamins (Supradyne syrup, Supradyne effervescent, Sambucol syrup, Sambucol effervescent) and deionized water (control group) for 2 min once a day for 28 days. Surface microhardness and roughness measurements were recorded at baseline and on the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th days. Surface microhardness was measured using a Vickers hardness tester and surface roughness was determined using a profilometer.

For all subgroups; the surface microhardness values of the Ketac Molar and Beautifil II demonstrated a statistically significant decrease from the baseline to the 28th day measurements (p < 0.05), while the surface roughness displayed increased values that were found to be statistically significant (p < 0.05). The Ketac Molar surface roughness values were significantly higher than Beautifil II in all subgroups for all measurement days (p = 0.0001).

Oral epithelial dysplasia (OED) is characterized histopathologically by cellular and morphological changes that remain the single most important factor predicting risk for subsequent development of invasive neoplasia. Hence the aims of the present study were to determine the rate of malignant change of OED in a group of patients followed-up for a number of years, and hence determine factors likely to influence this malignant change, and to describe the clinical characteristics of patients who developed recurrence of OED and second dysplastic lesions.

Resin infiltration (RI) material ICON is used in treating early proximal caries lesions, as it depends on a micro-invasive infiltration technology. This invitro study aimed to evaluate the effect of ICON resin infiltration (RI) on early proximal caries by comparing surface roughness and hardness before and after treatment with RI using atomic force microscopy (AFM), automated microhardness testing system (AMHTS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) invitro.

Twenty seven premolars extracted for orthodontic reasons were sectioned buccolingually, creating 54 specimens. Each specimen was immersed in demineralizing solution to induce caries. Only teeth with "International Caries Detection and Assessment System" codes 1 and 2 were selected. The specimens were divided randomly into either AFM, AMHTS or SEM groups, which examined demineralized enamel before and after treatment with ICON.

The mean average surface roughness and root mean square roughness values of demineralized enamel treated with ICON were significantly higher than untreated lesions (P < 0.001). The mean Vickers hardness values for demineralized enamel treated with ICON was significantly higher than untreated lesions (P < 0.001). SEM showed irregular, pitted and rough demineralized enamel surface with destruction of enamel rods and dissolution of enamel crystals. After ICON application, the surface showed complete blockage of enamel rods with RI and irregular, rough uneven topography.

Dynamic stimulation can induce bone and cartilage growth. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on injured temporomandibular joints (TMJs) in a rabbit model.

Twenty-four female Japanese white rabbits (age 12-16 weeks, weight 2.0-2.5 kg) were equally divided into 4 groups. In two groups, discectomy was performed with (the LD group) and without (the D group) subsequent LIPUS treatment. In the other groups, a sham operation was performed with (the LC group) and without (the C group) subsequent LIPUS treatment. Two animals in each group were sacrificed at each time point (2, 4, and 8 weeks postoperatively). Mandibular measurements were made using three-dimensional computed tomography. We performed histological and immunohistochemical examination of the articular disc, and the cartilage layer and bone at the 30- and 60-degree sites in each condyle.

There were no statistically significant differences among the groups in terms of thickness of the disc or the fibrous articular zone, or the number of BMP-2 positive cells. In terms of mandibular length, there were differences among the groups after 4 (P = 0.0498) and 8 weeks (P = 0.0260). Specifically, there was a difference between the LC group and the C group after 4 weeks (P = 0.014) and 8 weeks (P = 0.029).

Teledentistry has emerged as a new communication tool in various dental disciplines around the world. The aim of this study was to investigate the applicability and reliability of teledentistry in the field of diagnostic dentistry and explore the perception of Saudi dentists of its benefits and concerns.

An electronic survey with 40 questions was developed, validated and distributed electronically by email and social media channels to dentists from different specialty in Saudi Arabia. Collected data were analyzed for statistical significance.

Maxillary posterior teeth have close anatomical proximity to the maxillary sinus floor. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the associations between maxillary sinus membrane thickening and the adjacent teeth health by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

CBCT images were collected from 235 Taiwanese patients. The sinus mucosal thickening >2 mm is considered a pathologic sinus membrane. Demographic data such as sex, age, the thickness of sinus membrane, and the adjacent teeth health were recorded, graded, and analyzed.

A total prevalence of maxillary sinus membrane thickening of 36.6% (86/235) was found in this study. The sinus membrane thickening was significantly associated with periodontal bone loss (p < 0.001) and periapical lesions (p < 0.001), respectively. A multivariate logistic regression model demonstrated that males had a significantly higher risk of sinus membrane thickening than females (OR 2.08, 95% CI = 1.21-3.56). The patients in the age group ≥60 years showed a 4.35-fold increased risk of sinus membrane thickening compared with the patients in the age group ≤35 years (95% CI 1.94-9.77). Severe periodontal bone loss was significantly associated with mucosal thickening with an OR of 4.78 as compared with normal to mild group (95% CI 1.69-13.58). The patients having teeth with apical lesions had a 5.04 time OR for sinus membrane thickening than those having teeth without apical lesions (95% C.I. 2.37-10.69).

As the population ages, the prevalence of stroke increases, and as such there has been increasing interest in the risk factors associated with stroke. Although an association between periodontitis and stroke has been suggested, there has been no study of this association among the Korean population. Therefore, we investigated the association between periodontal health and stroke among Korean adults.

A total of 9497 adults aged ≥40 years representing the Korean population were included in this cross-sectional study from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) VI (2013-2015). Periodontitis was diagnosed by dentists based on the Community Periodontal Index (CPI). Also, participants filled out a questionnaire regarding their experience of doctor-diagnosed stroke. Hypertension, diabetes, body mass index (BMI), and oral hygiene behavior covariates were adjusted in logistic regression analysis.

The mean age of the study population was 55.71 ± 0.17 years and 52.7% of them were female. Also, 248 people had a history of having a stroke. Results of the logistic regression analysis after adjusting for age and sex showed a significant relationship between oral health behavior, periodontal health, and stroke even after adjusting for age, sex, education, household income, national health insurance, employment status, alcohol, smoking, diabetes, hypertension, BMI, and oral health behaviors (odds ratio [OR], 1.71; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.03-2.85).
