Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the nasal soft tissues, including movements of landmarks, changes in linear distances, and volumetric changes, using three-dimensional (3D) stereophotogrammetry after microimplant-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) in adult patients. Methods Facial data were scanned using a white light scanner before and after MARPE in 30 patients. In total, 7 mm of expansion was achieved over a 4-week expansion period. We determined 10 soft tissue landmarks using reverse engineering software and measured 3D vector changes at those points. selleck In addition, we calculated the distances between points to determine changes in the width of the nasal soft tissues. The volumetric change in the nose was also measured. Results All landmarks except pronasale and subnasale showed statistically significant movement on the x-axis. Pronasale, subnasale, alar right, and alar left showed significant movement on the y-axis, while all landmarks except subnasale showed significant movement on the z-axis. The alar base width, alar width, and alar curvature width increased by 1.214, 0.932, and 0.987 mm, respectively. The average volumetric change was 993.33 mm3, and the amount of increase relative to the average initial volume was 2.96%. Conclusions The majority of soft tissue landmarks around the nasal region show significant positional changes after MARPE in adults. The nose tends to widen and move forward and downward. The post-treatment nasal volume may also exhibit a significant increase relative to the initial volume. Clinicians should thoroughly explain the anticipated changes to patients before MARPE initiation. © 2020 The Korean Association of Orthodontists. The aim of this study is to compare the nutritional value of Alfalfa and accumulation of heavy metals in the farms near and far from the industrial regions. Three regions were considered located at 2, 32 and 65 km distances from an industrial region, and the nutrient content of the Alfalfa including crude protein, crude fiber, crude fat, nitrogen-free extract, and Ash as well as soil and plant heavy metals was determined. The results showed no significant difference in the value of nutrients in the three regions except nitrogen-free extract (mainly starch and sugars). A positive correlation was observed between nitrogen-free extract and lead, chromium, and arsenic (p ≤ 0.05). In addition, the highest accumulations of heavy metals such as arsenic, chromium, lead and cadmium were found in soil and Alfalfa produced at 2 km distance from the industrial area. The lead and cadmium concentrations were higher than the maximum allowable agricultural soil concentration in the areas near industrial region; the accumulation of these metals in the Alfalfa was however lower than the cattle and plant risk levels. The distribution of heavy metals in the Alfalfa cultivated in these three areas (zinc > copper > lead > chromium > arsenic > cadmium) did not coincide with the average of these metals in the soils (lead > zinc > chromium > copper > cadmium > arsenic). The positive correlation was also recorded between electrical conductivity of agricultural soils and copper, lead, chromium and arsenic content of Alfalfa. The highest translocation factors of arsenic, chromium and lead elements were detected in industrial areas. For copper and zinc, the highest translocation factor was found in non- industrial areas. The results of this study can be applied as an important control program in different areas. © Korean Society of Toxicology 2019.There are only a few reports on the effects of mycotoxins on pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) and the susceptibility to deoxynivalenol of these birds have never been reported before. The present experiment focuses to investigate the effects of different dietary concentrations of deoxynivalenol on blood plasma protein content, some parameters of lipid peroxidation and glutathione redox system and on the performance of pheasant chicks. A total of 320 1-day-old female pheasants were randomly assigned to four treatment groups fed with a diet contaminated with deoxynivalenol (control, 5.11 mg/kg, 11.68 mg/kg and 16.89 mg/kg). Birds were sacrificed at early (12, 24 and 72 h) and late (1, 2 and 3 weeks) stages of the experiment to demonstrate the oxidative stress-inducing effect of deoxynivalenol. Feed refusal was dose dependent, especially in the last third of the trial, but only minor body weight gain decrease was found. Lipid-peroxidation parameters did not show dose-dependent effect, except in blood plasma during the early stage of the trial. The glutathione redox system, reduced glutathione content and glutathione peroxidase activity, was activated in the liver, but primarily in the blood plasma. Glutathione peroxidase activity has changed parallel with reduced glutathione concentration in all tissues. Comparing our results with literature data, pheasants seem to have the same or higher tolerance to deoxynivalenol than other avian species, and glutathione redox system might contribute in some extent to this tolerance, as effective antioxidant defence against oxidative stress. © The Author(s) 2019.Arylquin 1, a small-molecule prostate-apoptosis-response-4 (Par-4) secretagogue, targets vimentin to induce Par-4 secretion. Secreted Par-4 binds to its receptor, 78-kDa glucose-regulated protein (GRP78), on the cancer cell surface and induces apoptosis. In the present study, we investigated the molecular mechanisms of arylquin 1 in cancer cell death. Arylquin 1 induces morphological changes (cell body shrinkage and cell detachment) and decreases cell viability in various cancer cells. Arylquin 1-induced cell death is not inhibited by apoptosis inhibitors (z-VAD-fmk, a pan-caspase inhibitor), necroptosis inhibitors (necrostatin-1), and paraptosis inhibitors. Furthermore, arylquin 1 significantly induces reactive oxygen species levels, but antioxidants [N-acetyl-l-cysteine and glutathione ethyl ester] do not inhibit arylquin 1-induced cell death. Furthermore, Par-4 knock-down by small interfering RNA confers no effect on cytotoxicity in arylquin 1-treated cells. Interestingly, arylquin 1 induces lysosomal membrane permeabilization (LMP), and cathepsin inhibitors and overexpression of 70-kDa heat shock protein (HSP70) markedly prevent arylquin 1-induced cell death. Therefore, our results suggest that arylquin 1 induces non-apoptotic cell death in cancer cells through the induction of LMP. © Korean Society of Toxicology 2019.Tartrazine (E102) is a synthetic food coloring, which belongs to the class of mono azo dyes and is known to cause numerous health problems. The current research aimed to evaluate the effect of this food dye on the enzymatic activity of amylase, lipase and proteases after a subchronic ingestion in Swiss mice. Additionally, an in vitro digestion model was used to highlight the relationship between the probable toxicity of tartrazine and the nature of the food ingested. The results show that there were no adverse effects of tartrazine on the body weight gain, and on amylase or lipase activities. However, in the high dose of tartrazine (0.05%) group, a significant decrease in trypsin and chymotrypsin enzymatic activities were observed. Regarding the in vitro digestion model, our findings show that there were no changes in the trypsin and chymotrypsin enzymatic activities either using 7.5 or 75 mg of tartrazine mixed with rice, butter or milk. We conclude that excessive consumption of tartrazine appears to alter the enzymatic activity of proteases in vivo which may have deleterious consequences on digestion. Even thought the dose close to the acceptable daily intake does not affect those activities, a strict control of tartrazine dose in high-consumption foods especially among children is an indispensable task. © Korean Society of Toxicology 2019.Chronic alcohol consumption has been implicated in male infertility, whereas Carica papaya (CP) ripe fruit possesses antioxidant activity. This study investigated histomorphological and hormonal effects of ripened CP in alcohol experimental model. Thirty Wistar rats were divided into six groups of five animals each as follows; groups 1, 2 and 3 received distilled water 2 ml, 40% ethanol 5 ml, and 40% ethanol 5 ml + 50 mg Clomiphene citrate/kg body weight, respectively, while groups 4, 5 and 6 received 40% ethanol 5 ml + CP 500, 1000 and 1500 mg/kg body weight, respectively. Sperm counts and motility were significantly decreased (p less then 0.05) in group 2 compared to group 1. Testosterone significantly increased (p less then 0.05) in CP-treated groups, and luteinizing hormone was significantly reduced (p less then 0.05) compared to the control. Group 2 showed spermatogenic cell distortions which were ameliorated in the CP-treated groups. CP exerted testicular protective potential against ethanol-induced testicular toxicity plausibly via its antioxidant mechanism. © Korean Society of Toxicology 2019.Several studies have pointed to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) as the main responsible for air pollution toxic effects. Indeed, PM2.5 may not only cause respiratory and cardiovascular abnormalities but it may also affect other organs such as the liver. Be that as it may, only a few studies have evaluated the PM2.5 effects on hepatic tissue. Moreover, most of them have not analyzed the relationship between particles composition and toxicological effects. In this study, healthy rats were subjected to urban levels of PM2.5 particles in order to assess their structural and functional effects on the liver. During the exposure periods, mean PM2.5 concentrations were slightly higher than the value suggested by the daily guideline of the World Health Organization. The exposed rats showed a hepatic increase of Cr, Zn, Fe, Ba, Tl and Pb levels. This group also showed leukocyte infiltration, sinusoidal dilation, hydropic inclusions and alterations in carbohydrates distribution. These histologic lesions were accompanied by serological changes, such as increase of total cholesterol and triglycerides, as well as genotoxic damage in their nuclei. We also observed significant associations between several biomarkers and PM2.5 composition. Our results show that exposure to low levels of PM2.5 might cause histologic and serological changes in liver tissue, suggesting that PM2.5 toxicity is influenced not only by their concentration but also by their composition and the exposure frequency. © Korean Society of Toxicology 2019.This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of leaf ethanolic extract of Etlingera hemisphaerica (LE3H) against the teratogenic effects of mercuric chloride (HgCl2) in mice (Mus musculus). Pregnant M. musculus were divided into four groups, each consisting of 10 dams, and received drink and food ad libitum. The first, second, and third, and fourth (control) groups were administered with LE3H, HgCl2, HgCl2 + LE3H, and double-distilled water alone, respectively. HgCl2 (5 mg/kg bw) was administered by injection on gestation day (GD) 9, and LE3H (0.39 mg/g bw) was administered by gavage on GD 10. Treated and control animals were killed by cervical dislocation on GD 18, dissected, and the fetuses were collected for evaluation of maternal, embryonic, and fetal toxicity. Eight parameters were measured (a) embryo resorption or resorbed embryo, (b) dead fetus, (c) living fetus, (d) morphologically normal living fetus, (e) malformed living fetus, (f) number of MLF, (g) length of MNLF, and (h) weight of MNLF.
