The present study aimed to assess the ecological risk of 30 current-use agricultural pesticides and biocides in the soil, sediments and aquatic organisms of a mixed land-use basin located in the Depressed Pampas Region of Argentina. Risk Quotients (RQs) were used to evaluate the chronic risk in soil and aquatic organisms, while Toxic Units (TUs) were used to assess the acute risk in sediment-dwelling organisms and aquatic biota. Acetochlor, hydroxy-atrazine, glyphosate, AMPA, metolachlor, imidacloprid and tebuconazole were the only pesticide residues detected (>30%) and quantified in all the matrices evaluated. Glyphosate and AMPA showed the highest concentrations, being their mean and maximum levels 27.90-176.00 μg kg-1 and 270-712.50 μg kg-1 in soils, 8.28-32.0 μg kg-1 and 6.85-17.50 μg kg-1 in sediments, and 1.88-4.36 μg L-1 and 0.66-1.03 μg L-1 in surface water. The RQs in soils showed high chronic risk, mainly due to AMPA and imidacloprid. The TUs in sediments showed acute risk in dwelling organisms, mainly due to glyphosate and imidacloprid. RQs assessment showed a range of chronic risk levels according to the site/sampling event, with higher contribution of atrazine and its metabolites, and acetochlor, whereas TUs assessment showed no acute risk in aquatic biota. In contrast to Europe, in Argentina, there are no restrictions regarding the use of atrazine, acetochlor, imidacloprid and glyphosate to protect aquatic life. Thus, it is recommended that the current Argentine pesticide regulations should be modified to prevent ecological risk and protect ecosystems.Cypermethrin (CYP) is a synthetic pyrethroid broadly used for pest control, however, it is extremely toxic to aquatic organisms. To assess the toxicity of CYP in red claw crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus, transcriptional and proteomic approaches combining two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and tandem mass spectrometry were used to compare the hepatic expression profiles. A total of 41,349 unigenes and 8839 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained, which were enriched in the process. The category of 779 (0.625 ng L-1 CYP vs Con), 1963 (1.25 vs Con), and 2066 (1.25 vs 0.625) DEGs were screened. All findings suggested that CYP can induce antioxidant and biotransformation modulation variations in C. quadricarinatus to resist immunotoxicity and oxidative damages. The category of 196 (0.625 ng L-1 CYP vs Con) specific proteins were differentially expressed 24 proteins were upregulated, and 20 proteins were downregulated relative to CYP. Protein identification indicated the KEGG pathways of the human immunodeficiency virus 1 infection, insulin signaling pathway, and influenza A enriched. From the differential expression of the selected nine proteins, the increased Loc113824800, Rps19, Atp2, Rps10, Hsp40, Brafldraft_124327, and the decreased Loc117331934, Loc113213835, and Loc106806551 revealed. While for the verification of the eight genes in transcriptome and the above nine genes in proteomic, specifically, gpx5, ggt, loc106458463, chelonianin decreased in the 0.625 ng L-1 CYP group. The transcripts of loc113816050, akr1d1 and gst, chelonianin and loc108675455 decreased and increased in the 1.25 ng L-1 CYP group, respectively. The present study reflects the overall change in cellular structure and metabolism related to the resistance of pyrethroid insecticides.Samples of adipose tissue, meat and livers from pigs, cows, sheep and goats from Curaçao were analysed for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), and dioxin-like (dl-) and non-dioxin-like (ndl-) PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls). Levels in many samples of adipose tissue were higher than the EU maximum levels (MLs) for PCDD/Fs and the sum of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs (sum-TEQ), indicating unusually high levels. read more Median sum-TEQ (Toxic Equivalents) levels for pigs, cows, sheep and goats were 0.9 (range 0.3-35), 3.0 (0.5-14), 5.7 (0.3-28) and 6.5 (0.5-134) pg TEQ g-1 fat. For most samples, the congener pattern pointed to the burning of waste as the major source, in line with the fact that most animals forage outside. MLs for ndl-PCBs were also exceeded in some of the samples, indicating that some areas are additionally contaminated with PCBs. Meat levels showed similar lipid based levels as adipose tissue, contrary to liver levels, which were much higher in most animals. Pigs showed liver sequestration at lower levels in adipose tissue than the ruminants. The relatively high levels observed in this study are likely to result in high exposure of consumers and measures were taken to reduce the contamination of areas where animals forage.Honey bees are major pollinators of crops with high economic value. Thus, bees are considered to be the most important nontarget organisms exposed to adverse effects of plant protection product use. The side effects of pesticides are one of the major factors often linked to colony losses. Fewer studies have researched acute poisoning incidents in comparison to the study of the sublethal effects of pesticides. link2 Here, we compared pesticides in dead/dying bees from suspected poisoning incidents and the suspected crop source according to government protocols. Additionally, we analyzed live bees and bee bread collected from the brood comb to determine recent in-hive contamination. We used sites with no reports of poisoning for reference. Our analysis confirmed that not all of the suspected poisonings correlated with the suspected crop. The most important pesticides related to the poisoning incidents were highly toxic chlorpyrifos, deltamethrin, cypermethrin and imidacloprid and slightly toxic prochloraz and thiacloprid. Importantly, poisoning was associated with pesticide cocktail application. Almost all poisoning incidents were investigated in relation to rapeseed. Some sites were found to be heavily contaminated with several pesticides, including a reference site. However, other sites were moderately contaminated despite agricultural use, including rapeseed cultivation sites, which can influence the extent of pesticide use, including tank mixes and other factors. We suggest that the analysis of pesticides in bee bread and in bees from the brood comb is a useful addition to dead bee and suspected crop analysis in poisoning incidents to inform the extent of recent in-hive contamination.A novel electrocoagulation (EC) system for the treatment of produced water (PW), with a provision to shift polarity is designed with the aim of reducing the problems resulting from electrode passivation. The enhancement of performance in terms of the rate and completion of the pollutant removal, energy and electrode consumption, sludge formation and ultimately the operating cost has been investigated by performing statistically designed experiments using RSM. The switching mode operation of EC had brought about significant improvement in the oil removal than the conventional mode. The polarity changeover in short span of batch recirculation time (BRT) was found to be more effective. Greater current density (CD) and supporting electrolyte concentration (SC) were found to enable a still lower switchover time (SOT) so that changeover frequency can further be increased. It was possible to remove a maximum of 99% COD and 98% Oil & Grease from a PW sample having initial concentration of 360 mgL-1of oil (1280 mgL- 1COD) at BRT of 15 min, CD of 1.6 Adm-2, SC of 3 gL-1 and SOT of 1 min. The combination of operating variables (BRT- 3 min, CD- 2.14 Adm-2SC- 3 gL-1and SOT- 1.9 min) giving minimum operating cost (0.65 US$/kg COD removed) achieving oil removal (88%) meeting discharge standards was found out by optimizing the RSM models for cost and oil removal. link3 The method can be considered as an effective alternative for treating PW especially in offshore oil basins where time and space are the major constraints. This work presents a disruptive approach to promote highly-efficient photo-Fenton process at neutral pH under continuous mode operation. The system consists of a tube-in-tube membrane reactor designed for continuous-flow titration of low iron doses to the annular reaction zone (ARZ). A concentrated acidic ferrous ion (Fe2+) solution is fed by the lumen-side of the membrane, permeating through the membrane pores (inside-out mode), being dosed and uniformly delivered to the membrane shell-side. Polluted water, containing amoxicillin (AMX) and oxidant (H2O2), flows continuously in the reactor annulus (space between the membrane shell-side and an outer quartz tube). The catalyst radial dispersion is enhanced by the helicoidal movement of water around the membrane shell-side, efficiently promoting its contact with H2O2 and UV light. The efficiency of photochemical and photocatalytic oxidation was evaluated as a function of catalyst dose, catalyst injection mode (radial permeation vs injection upstream from the reactor inlet), light source (UVA vs UVC) and aqueous solution matrix (synthetic vs real wastewater). At steady-state, photo-Fenton reaction with Fe2+ radial addition, driven by UVC light, showed the highest AMX removal for synthetic (∼65%, removal rate of 44 μMAMX/min, using [Fe2+]ARZ = 2 mg/L and [H2O2]inlet = 10 mg/L) and real municipal wastewaters (∼45%, removal rate of 31 μMAMX/min, with [Fe2+]ARZ = 5 mg/L and [H2O2]inlet = 40 mg/L), with a residence time of only 4.6 s.Anaerobic decolorization of azo dyes has been evidenced to be an economical and effective pretreatment method, but its generally limited by the low decolorization efficiency, especially for biodecolorization sulfonated azo dyes. In this study, magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) as a conductive material, was coupled into anaerobic system for enhancing decolorization of sulfonated azo dyes, i.e., methyl orange (MO), with technology feasibility and system stability emphasized. The results showed that the anaerobic decolorization capacity was significantly enhanced with addition of MNPs (at dose of 1 g/L), where the efficiencies of MO decolorization and aromatic amines formation were as high as 97.28 ± 0.78 % and 99.44 ± 0.25%, respectively. In addition, both electron transport system activity and sludge conductivity were also significantly improved, suggesting that a direct extracellular electron transfer had been successfully established via MNPs as RMs. Under continuous-flow experiments, addition of MNPs not only improved anaerobic system resistance environmental stress (e.g., high MO concentration, low hydraulic retention time and low co-substance concentration) but also accelerated sludge granulation. The relative abundance of functional species related to dissimilatory iron reduction and MO biodegradation were also enriched under MNPs stimulation. The observed long-term stable performance suggests the full-scale application potential of this coupled system for treatment of wastewater containing sulfonated azo dyes.Anaerobic digestion is a promising waste-to-energy alternative technology. However, the efficiency upgrading for conventional mesophilic digestion of organic solid waste is always indispensable. Employing hyperthermophilic or thermophilic microbial community is one of the viable upgrading alternatives. Given the unavailability of the superior microbial communities, mesophilic digested sludge was used as inoculum, and instantly controlled at 70 °C and 55 °C for acclimation of hyperthermophilic and thermophilic inocula, respectively. Waste activated sludge was continuously and synchronously fed into two digesters. After one round, thermophilic digester achieved stable biogas production rate at 0.22 L L-1 d-1, with a methane proportion over 60%, whereas fluctuation was observed in the hyperthermophilic digester, and approximately triple time was needed to reach a relatively stable biogas production rate 0.12 L L-1 d-1. Nevertheless, higher hydrolysis ratio 24.4% was observed in the hyperthermophilic digester despite the lower biogas production.
