Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a growing phenomenon worldwide. Despite its historical role in Chinese society, however, few studies have explored the nature of communication among patients with cancer who receive TCM care in addition to conventional medicine. If TCM practitioners acquire adequate knowledge to understand the needs and communication issues for their patients with cancer, particularly those who are simultaneously receiving conventional medicine, this will lead to better quality of care and clinical outcomes, such as high patient satisfaction and treatment compliance.

To fill this knowledge gap, this study explored the nature of communication among patients with cancer in Hong Kong who receive TCM treatment in addition to conventional medicine.

We conducted in-depth interviews with 20 patients, 5 oncologists and 5 TCM practitioners to elicit their views on TCM treatments.

We adopted a qualitative approach using an interpretative phenomenological analysis.

Based on the themes that emerged from our interview transcripts, we outlined communication priorities when advising patients with cancer who are receiving both TCM and conventional medical care. We developed a framework to train TCM practitioners to better integrate their patients' conventional medical history when delivering patient care.

Our study findings inform communication priorities when caring for patients who opt for TCM care in addition to conventional treatments. In addition, they provide useful information for developing future clinical research studies to explore integrated approaches between TCM and conventional medicine in treating patients with cancer.

In this study, we applied metagenomics technology to comprehensively explore the metabolic functional potential and taxonomic diversity of the microbial consortia CS (cultured on corn stover) and FP (cultured on filter paper). Analyses of the data on metagenomics taxonomic affiliations revealed considerable differences in the taxonomic composition and carbohydrate-active enzymes profile of the microbial consortia CS and FP. Pseudomonas, Dysgonomonas and Sphingobacterium in CS and Cellvibrio and Pseudomonas in FP had a much wider distribution of lignocellulose degradative ability. The genes for more lignocellulose degradative enzymes were detected when the relatively simple substrate filter paper was used as the carbon source. Clusters of Orthologous Groups (COG) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) annotation analyses revealed considerable levels of similarity, and carbohydrate metabolic and amino acid metabolic pathways were the most enriched in CS and FP, respectively. The mechanism used by the two microbial consortia to degrade lignocellulose was similar, but the annotation of quantity of genes indicated that they are diverse and vary greatly. These data underlie the interactions between microorganisms and the synergism of enzymes during the degradative process of lignocellulose under different substrates and suggest the development of potential microbial resources.The aim of the study was to evaluate the clonal relatedness and antimicrobial susceptibility in 52 Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from cut wound infections in non-related community patients and to determine the presence of selected virulence genes. To analyse the clonal relatedness of investigated strains, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) of macrorestricted DNA fragments was conducted. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using the AST-P644 card in the VITEK 2 Compact system. All strains were tested for the presence of selected virulence genes using Single and Multiplex PCR. All isolates were classified into 15 PFGE genotypes and seven unique patterns. The vast majority of investigated S. aureus strains were susceptible to all tested antimicrobial agents. Among examined S. aureus strains, 24 combinations of virulence factors were identified. 62.5% of S. aureus strains contained various egc types, alone or together with other staphylococcal enterotoxin genes. A high percentage (86.5%) of isolates harboured superantigen genes. The most frequent enterotoxin gene identified was encoding for sep. All S. aureus strains were classified as agr-positive, and the most frequent agr gene was agr-1. In a previous study, we found 80% of our study areas in tidal freshwater and salt marshes in the Delaware Estuary and Barnegat Bay had elevation change rates lower than the 19-year increase in mean sea level. Etomoxir chemical structure Here, we examine relationships between marsh elevation dynamics and abiotic and biotic parameters in order to assess their utility as indicators of vulnerability to relative sea level rise. We further apply a range of marsh vulnerability indicators including elevation change rates to evaluate their ability to corroborate marsh habitat change over the last 30 years. Of the field measurements, soil bulk density and belowground plant biomass were among the strongest predictors of elevation change and accretion dynamics across all marsh types and settings. Both tidal freshwater and salt marshes tended to have higher rates of elevation increase and surface accretion in areas where soil bulk density and live belowground biomass were higher. Nine of the ten marshes experienced a net loss of area from the 1970s to 2015 ranging from 0.05 to 14%. Although tidal freshwater marshes were low in elevation and experienced variable elevation change rates, marsh area loss was low. Conversely, salt marshes closest to the coast and perched high in the tidal frame with a higher degree of human modification tended to experience the greatest marsh loss, which incorporated anthropogenic impacts and edge erosion. The objective of the present study was to characterize the impact of hypoxia on the cognitive and psychological profile following COVID-19.

Sixty-two patients with COVID-19 were enrolled in a cross-sectional study and divided into two groups based on disease severity outpatients with no pulmonary complications vs. inpatients with hypoxemic pneumonia having received oxygen therapy. All the participants underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation that included depression, anxiety, fatigue, sleepiness, attentional, memory and executive processes, and social cognition. For the inpatients, we also collected laboratory data (blood gas, blood glucose, fibrin, fibrinogen, D-dimer, and C-reactive protein).

Cognitive disorders was found in patients with COVID-19 at least 18% had an impairment of memory and 11% had attentional dysfunctions. A high level of fatigue (90% of the patients), anxiety (52%), and depression (50%) was also observed. The impairments in attentional (p < 0.001 for omission and commission in CPT 3) and memory (p < 0.003 for Index Cue Efficiency from free and cue selected reminding test) functions were greater in COVID-19 inpatients that in COVID-19 outpatients. In contrast, levels of fatigue, depression, and anxiety were similarly high in both groups.

To investigate the safety profile and short-term outcome of super-veil nerve-sparing extraperitoneal single-port robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (espRARP) on da Vinci Si platform.

From December 2018 to March 2021, 106 consecutive patients with treatment-naive prostate cancer were prospectively included. espRARP was performed on da Vinci Si surgical platform. Operative time, estimated blood loss, Clavien-Dindo complication classification, continence, potency recovery, quality-of-life scores, and postoperative prostate-specific antigen (PSA) were documented.

Patients aged 52-79years (mean ± SD, 64.8 ± 6.15 yrs), with a median PSA of 9.2ng/ml (IQR 6.70, 16.83) and median prostate volume of 31.9ml (IQR 30.01, 38.54). 95.28% (101/106) were clinically localized. All patients underwent espRARP successfully with no open conversions. Operative time was 94.2 ± 30.26min with an estimated blood loss of 68.5ml (range, 50-120ml). No Grade III complications or above were documented. Positive surgical margin was 17.
