The use of natural products for disease control is a promising approach to solving the problem of drug resistance. The aim of the research reported here was to evaluate the fasciolicidal and anti-Clostridium novyi type B activities of propolis administered orally to sheep infected with Fasciola gigantica and C. novyi type B. Sheep infected with both pathogens were divided into two groups an infected treated group and an infected non-treated group. The treatment was oral administration of 50 mg propolis extract/kg daily for 15 days. The body weight of the sheep, fecal egg counts of F. gigantica, serum levels of F. gigantica IgG, concentrations of cytokines (IL-2, IL-10, and IL-17), and bacterial counts of C. novyi were evaluated. Following treatment, the sheep had increased body weight and a significant decrease in the egg count, which was reduced by 54.54% at 15 days post treatment. The level of anti- Fasciola IgG increased, whereas levels of IL-2, IL-10, and IL-17 decreased in propolistreated sheep. Treatment of sheep with propolis produced a significant reduction in fecal count of C. novyi, from 8 × 109 to 3 × 103 colony units per gram at 15 days post treatment. CASE REPORT A 60-year-old woman with a diagnosed subarachnoid hemorrhage was studied with angiography through a transradial approach. A left carotid bifurcation aneurysm was diagnosed after three-vessel angiography was performed with a Simmons type 2 catheter, making a complete loop between the right subclavian artery, aortic arc, and left carotid artery. This is the first report of cerebral aneurysm embolization through a right transradial approach in a patient with an aberrant right subclavian artery.BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of grayscale ultrasound (GSUS), power Doppler imaging (PDI), and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) diagnosis through animal experiments. MATERIAL AND METHODS A rabbit RA model was constructed. The animals were randomly divided into 2 groups, namely, the RA model group and the control group. GSUS, PDI, and CEUS were performed in the model group during early RA and were compared with pathology of synovial biopsies. The consistency of 3 types of ultrasonography was evaluated in tandem with pathological grading. RESULTS 23 rabbits in the RA model group completed the experiment. GSUS showed that the synovial thickening of grades 1, 2 and 3 occurred in 12, 19, and 15 joints, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of PDI in the diagnosis of knee joint synovitis in RA grades 1, 2, and 3 were 80.56% (29/36), 60.00% (6/10), and 76.09% (35/46), respectively, while those with CEUS were 94.44% (34/36), 90.00% (9/10), and 93.47% (43/46), respectively. The differences in diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the 2 methods were statistically significant. Additionally, the thickness of the synovium measured with GSUS precontrast was greater than that of postcontrast. CONCLUSIONS RA evaluated with GSUS is often more hypertrophied than when evaluated with CEUS, while evaluation by PDI is less hypertrophied than that by CEUS. However, from a practical view point, GSUS and PDI are of sufficient practical value, except for in a few special cases.

The speed with which a pathogen circulates in a sexual network is a function of network connectivity. Cross-sectional connectivity is a function of network features like momentary degree and assortative mixing. Temporal connectivity is driven by partner acquisition rates. The forward-reachable path (FRP) has been proposed as a summary measure of these two aspects of transmission potential. We use empirical data from San Francisco and Atlanta to estimate the generative parameters of the FRP and compare results to the HIV/sexually transmitted infection epidemics in each city.

We used temporal exponential random graph models to estimate the generative parameters for each city's dynamic sexual network from survey data. We then simulated stochastic dynamic networks from the fitted models and calculated the FRP for each realization, overall, and stratified by partnership type and demographics.

The overall mean and median paths were higher in San Francisco than in Atlanta. The overall paths for each city were greater than the sum of the paths in each individual partnership network. In the casual partnership network, the mean path was highest in the youngest age group and lowest in the oldest age group, despite the fact that the youngest group had the lowest mean momentary degree and past-year partner counts.

Social participation has been suggested as a means to prevent depressive symptoms. However, it remains unclear whether a one-time boost suffices or whether participation needs to be sustained over time for long-term prevention. We estimated the impacts of alternative hypothetical interventions in social participation on subsequent depressive symptoms among older adults.

Data were from a nationwide prospective cohort study of Japanese older adults aged 65 years or older (n=32 748). We analyzed social participation 1) as a baseline exposure from 2010 (approximating a one-time boost intervention) and 2) as a time-varying exposure from 2010 and 2013 (approximating a sustained intervention). We defined binary depressive symptoms in 2016 using the Geriatric Depression Scale. We used the doubly robust targeted maximum likelihood estimation to address time-dependent confounding.

The magnitude of the association between sustained participation and the lower prevalence of depressive symptoms was larger than the association observed for baseline participation only (e.g., Prevalence Ratio, PR, for participation in any activity 0.83; 95% CI 0.79, 0.88 vs. 0.90; 0.87, 0.94). For activities with a lower proportion of consistent participation over time (e.g., senior clubs), there was little evidence of an association between baseline participation and subsequent depressive symptoms, while an association for sustained participation was evident (e.g., PR for senior clubs 0.96; 0.90, 1.02 vs. 0.88; 0.79, 0.97). Participation at baseline but withholding participation in 2013 was not associated with subsequent depressive symptoms.

Recent reports suggest that racial differences in breast cancer incidence rates have decreased. We examined whether these findings apply to breast cancer mortality while considering age, period, and cohort influences on both absolute and relative measures of breast cancer mortality.

Using publicly available datasets (CDC WONDER, Human Mortality Database), we developed an age-period-cohort model of breast cancer mortality and breast cancer deaths as a proportion of all deaths during 1968-2019 among all women and by five race/ethnicity groups with sufficient numbers for estimation Hispanic (all races), American Indian/Alaska Native and Asian/Pacific Islanders (regardless of ethnicity), non-Hispanic Black, and non-Hispanic White.

Initially increasing after 1968, age-adjusted breast cancer mortality rates have decreased among all racial/ethnic groups since 1988. The age-adjusted percent of all deaths due to breast cancer also has been declining for non-Hispanic White women since about 1990 while increasing or holding steady for other race/ethnic groups. In 2019, the age-adjusted percent of deaths due to breast cancer for women was highest for Asian/Pacific Islanders (5.6%) followed by non-Hispanic Black (4.5%), Hispanic (4.4%), non-Hispanic White (4.1%), and American Indian/Alaska Native women (2.6%).
