We aimed to analyse age-related anatomical changes in teeth and mandibular structures using panoramic radiographs.

We included 471 subjects aged 13-70 years (mean, 35.12 ± 18.72 years). Panoramic radiographs were used to record intraoral condition and radiomorphometric parameters. After grouping the subjects by age decade, descriptive statistics and analysis of variance were performed to assess age-related patterns.

The number of missing teeth, endodontically treated teeth, full veneer crowns, and implant prosthesis increased with age (all p < .05). The prevalence of periodontitis significantly increased after the 40s and was the highest in the 60s (57.1%). The maxillary canine root was the longest in the 10s and 20s (p < .001). With age, the mandibular canal and mental foramen moved towards the alveolar bone crest, on the opposite side of the mandibular inferior border. The pulp area and pulp-to-tooth ratio of maxillary/mandibular first molars were significantly higher in the 10s and 20s than in other age groups (all p < .05).

Assessing these age-related changes can be useful in determining an individual's age, and may aid in medico-legal and forensic judgments.

Patients with advanced malignancy are often on medications for co-morbidities, including those for primary or secondary prevention. The benefit from these medications can be limited and may result in adverse effects, interact with medications used for the malignancy or associated symptoms, increase pill burden and reduce quality of life.

A retrospective chart review was conducted of patients with incurable malignancy admitted under medical oncology at Liverpool Hospital over a 90-day period. Demographic variables, co-morbidities, disease related parameters and medications were reviewed. Criteria were established to identify low or limited value medications.

Seventy-eight patients were identified between September and December 2018. Thirty day mortality was 33%. Sixty five percent of the cohort were on 5 or more medications and 24% on 10 or more. One low or limited value medication was reported in 36% and 20% were on 2 or more. Age ≤ 60 years was associated with a risk of being on at least one unnecessary medication. Patients with fewer co-morbidities and those in their last three months of life were significantly less likely to have polypharmacy. Nine percent of the cohort was on 3 or more antihypertensives and 6% of patients were on 3 or more oral hypoglycemics.

Polypharmacy and continued prescribing of low or limited value medications was identified in a high proportion of patients. Further studies are needed to assess the impact of continuing these medications, as well as investigation of patient and physician attitudes towards de-escalation. Appalachian residents have higher cancer prevalence and invasive cancer incidence in almost all cancer types relative to non-Appalachian residents. Public health interventions have been carried out to increase preventive cancer screening participation. However, no studies have evaluated the effectiveness of existing interventions targeting cancer screening uptake in this high-risk population. The main objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of interventions aimed at increasing uptake and/or continuing participation in screened cancers (breast, cervical, colorectal, lung, and prostate) in Appalachia.

We conducted a systematic review of electronic databases and gray literature using a combination of MeSH and free-text search terms related to breast, cervical, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancer; mass screening; health promotion; and Appalachia. We identified 3,014 articles of which 15 articles were included. We assessed methodological quality using validated tools and analyzed findings usining interventions to reduce disparities in cancer morbidity and mortality in Appalachian populations.Nesidiocoris tenuis (Reuter) is an efficient predatory biological control agent used throughout the Mediterranean Basin in tomato crops but regarded as a pest in northern European countries. From the family Miridae, it is an economically important insect yet very little is known in terms of genetic information and no genomic or transcriptomic studies have been published. Here, we use a linked-read sequencing strategy on a single female N. tenuis. From this, we assembled the 355 Mbp genome and delivered an ab initio, homology-based and evidence-based annotation. Along the way, the bacterial "contamination" was removed from the assembly. In addition, bacterial lateral gene transfer (LGT) candidates were detected in the N. Anisomycin tenuis genome. The complete gene set is composed of 24 688 genes; the associated proteins were compared to other hemipterans (Cimex lectularis, Halyomorpha halys and Acyrthosiphon pisum). We visualized the genome using various cytogenetic techniques, such as karyotyping, CGH and GISH, indicating a karyotype of 2n = 32. Additional analyses include the localization of 18S rDNA and unique satellite probes as well as pooled sequencing to assess nucleotide diversity and neutrality of the commercial population. This is one of the first mirid genomes to be released and the first of a mirid biological control agent.
