By June 2020, CW was operating at near-normal procedural volume and there were no documented cases of in-hospital viral transmission. Only 0.5% of procedures were performed under augmented COVID-19 precautions (negative pressure environment and highest-level personal protective equipment).

CW successfully developed a multi-disciplinary pre-procedural COVID-19 testing protocol that enabled resumption of near-normal procedural volume within three months while limiting in-hospital viral transmission and resource use.

Eight weeks of feeding trial revealed that dietary supplementation of B. subtilis 6-3-1 at all three concentrations (1 × 106 CFU g-1 as BS6; 1 × 107 CFU g-1 as BS7; 1 × 108 CFU g-1 as BS8) could promote the growth performance of hybrid groupers to a certain extent at different time points. At the end of 8th week, BS6 and BS8 significantly promoted the weight gain rate (WGR), specific growth rate (SGR) of hybrid groupers. The digestive enzyme activities were also increased in BS6 and BS8 groups comparing with those in control grouplth enhancing, and V. harveyi resisting effects, BS7 show great potential to be used as a probiotic in hybrid grouper culture.

The in vitro application of rhizosphere microorganisms led to a higher rooting percentage in Pyrus Py12 rootstocks and increased plant growth of Pyrus Py170 and Prunus RP-20. The rooting of fruit tree rootstocks is the most challenging step of the in vitro propagation process. The use of rhizosphere microorganisms to promote in vitro rooting and plant growth as an alternative to the addition of chemical hormones to culture media is proposed in the present study. Explants from two Pyrus (Py170 and Py12) rootstocks and the Prunus RP-20 rootstock were inoculated with Pseudomonas oryzihabitans PGP01, Cladosporium ramotenellum PGP02 and Phoma sp. PGP03 following two different methods to determine their effects on in vitro rooting and plantlet growth. The effects of the microorganisms on the growth of fully developed Py170 and RP-20 plantlets were also studied in vitro. All experiments were conducted using vermiculite to simulate a soil system in vitro. When applied to Py12 shoots, which is a hard-to-root plant md (IAA), at different levels. Overall, our results demonstrate that the microorganisms P. oryzihabitans PGP01 and C. ramotenellum PGP02 had beneficial effects on in vitro rooting and plantlet growth and could be applied to in vitro tissue culture as a substitute for IBA.Metformin remains the cornerstone of management for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It is also known that it has beneficial pleiotropic actions. In addition, there is emerging evidence that this agent may prove beneficial in ameliorating depression in T2DM. The underlying mechanisms of this new action remain elusive, but experimental studies point to improved synaptic function and increased serotonin activity, along with the known inflammatory and antioxidant properties of metformin. Obviously, we need to further explore the potential utility of such antidepressant effects among T2DM subjects in everyday reality.Growing skull fracture (GSF) is a rare complication of pediatric head trauma. It usually arises from a linear fracture with an underlying dural tear, which results in herniation of the intracranial contents. In rare cases, the herniated intracranial contents can be restricted in the diploe, resulting in an expanded diploic cavity. If there is brain parenchyma herniating into the expanded diploic cavity, the condition is termed as intradiploic encephalocele (IE). Here we present a peculiar pediatric occipital GSF case that resulted from the silent progression of a linear fracture with a small brain herniation into the widened fracture finally leading to an IE after approximately 7 years. RO215535 Detailed imaging findings from the early injury to the late phase of the disease were provided to record this natural process. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case providing the imaging data of early injury before developing into IE.Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative disease affecting joints with an increasing prevalence around the world and in the Middle East region. Research about the prevalence/incidence of OA in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries was limited with inconsistent findings. Therefore, the aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis for studies reporting the prevalence/incidence of OA among people living in the GCC countries. A comprehensive search was performed using MEDLINE, PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Google Scholar from inception to December 2020 to identify eligible studies examining the prevalence/incidence of OA in the GCC countries. Meta-analysis was conducted, and the Newcastle Ottawa Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies was utilized to evaluate methodological quality. Thirteen studies were included (12 studies reported prevalence and one study reported incidence), with a total of 24,625 participants with an estimated overall prevalence of 16.13% and incidence of 3.5% of OA in the GCC countries. The quality of the included studies was unsatisfactory (six studies), satisfactory (six studies), and good quality (one study). Common risk factors were being older adult, female, obese, and having lower scores for quality of life. This study shows a high prevalence of OA among individuals living in the GCC countries at approximately 16.13%. Only one study reported incidence of 3.5% of OA in this population. This prevalence rate needs to be confirmed in future research with a similar population and at the site of joint OA levels. Common risk factors should be interpreted with caution since only a few studies reported risk factors. Key Points • The pooled prevalence of Osteoarthritis in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries was 16.13% based on 12 included studies.

This randomized phase II trial compared tegafur-uracil/leucovorin (UFT/LV) plus oxaliplatin (TEGAFOX) to UFT/LV as adjuvant chemotherapy for patients with high-risk stage II/III colorectal cancer.

From 2010 to April 2015, 159 patients who underwent curative resection were randomly assigned to receive TEGAFOX (85 mg/m

oxaliplatin on days 1 and 15, 300 mg/m

/day UFT and 75 mg/day LV on days 1-28, every 35 days for five cycles) or UFT/LV. The primary study endpoint was disease-free survival.

The 3-year disease-free survival rate was 84.2% in the TEGAFOX arm, versus 62.1% for UFT/LV. The stratified hazard ratio for disease-free survival for TEGAFOX compared to UFT/LV was 0.338 (P < 0.01). The incidence of any-grade adverse events was significantly higher in the TEGAFOX arm (96.1%) than in the UFT/LV arm (76.6%; P < 0.01). The rates of any-grade neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase elevation, and peripheral sensory neuropathy were higher in the TEGAFOX group, whereas the incidence of grade ≥ 3 adverse events did not differ between the groups.

TEGAFOX is an additional adjuvant chemotherapy option for high-risk stage II/III colorectal cancer.

Sildenafil and tadalafil, a type-5 phosphodiesterase inhibitor, can improve flap viability, however, the action mechanisms involved in this process are still unclear. To assess the effects of orally administered sildenafil and tadalafil on the healing kinetics and skin flap viability, sixty-two Wistar rats were divided into three groups control (n = 22), sildenafil (n = 20), and tadalafil (n = 20). The solutions were administered orally (dose 10 mg/kg) immediately after the surgical procedure and then every 24 h. At postoperative days 7 and 14, the skin flap samples were collected, submitted to histological processing and evaluated under optical microscopy. In experimental groups (sildenafil and tadalafil), we found an increased vascularization (p  less then  0.05) on the 7th and 14th day associated with the ulcer size decrease on the 14th day, although it was not significant. There was a higher influx of neutrophils and a decrease of mononuclear population on the 7th day (p  less then  0.05). On the 14th day, these differences were observed only in the tadalafil group (p  less then  0.05). This study suggested positive results with the use of sildenafil and tadalafil as adjuvant drugs in skin flap viability.Osteoporosis is a systemic metabolic disease defined by a decreased bone mineral density, microarchitectural deterioration, and an increased incidence of fragility fractures that may lead to morbidity and mortality. Boron may stimulate new bone formation and regeneration, when combined with nano-hydroxyapatite. We questioned whether injecting boron-containing nano-hydroxyapatite composites with hyaluronan increased the bone mineral density and new bone formation in osteoporotic rabbit femurs. The regenerative effects of injectable boron-containing nano-hydroxyapatite composites from 6 to 12 weeks, which may prevent osteoporotic femoral fractures, were assessed. Boron-containing (10 μg/ml) nano-hydroxyapatite composites were injected into the intramedullary femoral cavity with hyaluronan. These significantly increased the histomorphometric new bone surface to the total bone surface ratio at 6 and 9 weeks. The micro-tomographic bone volume to the total volume ratio and bone mineral density in osteoporotic rabbit femurs increased when compared to the hyaluronan (p = 0.004, p = 0.004, p = 0.004, p = 0.01, respectively) and the sham-control (p = 0.01, p = 0.004, p = 0.01, p = 0.037, respectively) groups. The boron-containing group had a higher bone mineralization and new bone formation compared to the nano-hydroxyapatite group, although the difference was not statistically significant. These findings reveal that intramedullary injection of boron-containing nano-hydroxyapatite with hyaluronan increases new bone formation and mineralization in ovariectomized rabbit femurs. Boron-containing nano-hydroxyapatite composites are promising tissue engineering biomaterials that may have regenerative potential in preventing primary and/or secondary femoral fractures in osteoporosis patients.

This study investigated relationships of Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and Short Form 36 (SF-36) total and subscale scores with global spinal parameters in patients with degenerative lumbar scoliosis (DLS).

This was a prospective single-center study of 126 consecutive patients with DLS. Disability was evaluated using the ODI and SF-36 total and subscale scores. Sagittal and coronal parameters were measured. Pearson's correlation analysis was performed to determine relationships between disability and radiographic parameters.

The study population included 76 women and 15 men (mean age, 70.2 ± 8.4years). Mean Cobb angle was 18.9° ± 8.0°. The ODI total score and SF-36 physical component score were only correlated with coronal parameters. ODI pain intensity, personal care, lifting, sitting, and sex life domains were only correlated with coronal parameters. The walking, standing, social life, and traveling domain scores were correlated with coronal and sagittal parameters. The SF-36 bodily pain and vitality domain scores were only correlated with coronal parameters.
