Most cancers occur in lower and middle income countries, where pathologists are scarce. Despite this, few pathology training programs offer global health electives, and trainees are not exposed to challenges associated with practicing in resource-restricted settings.

To implement a global health elective model aimed at exposing trainees to global health while alleviating overburdened pathologists in resource-restricted settings.

For 1 year, trainees at 2 US institutions reviewed cases shipped weekly from a pathology lab serving Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana. Turnaround time, specimen type, and trainee and clinician satisfaction were assessed.

Trainees reviewed an average of 16 cases per week. Average turnaround time was 6 days. There was no significant difference between the turnaround time for the US trainees and the pathologist based in the lab in Trinidad. Trainees and clinicians reported a high level of satisfaction, and the collaboration was fruitful, resulting in the publication of a case report.

We demonstrate that collaboration between US trainees and laboratories in resource-restricted settings, in the form of a global health elective, is mutually beneficial.

The virus causes the infectious disease COVID-19. The biology of coronaviruses has been studied for many years. JTE 013 mouse However, bioinformatics tools designed explicitly for SARS-CoV-2 have only recently been developed as a rapid reaction to the need for fast detection, understanding and treatment of COVID-19. To control the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it is of utmost importance to get insight into the evolution and pathogenesis of the virus. In this review, we cover bioinformatics workflows and tools for the routine detection of SARS-CoV-2 infection, the reliable analysis of sequencing data, the tracking of the COVID-19 pandemic and evaluation of containment measures, the study of coronavirus evolution, the discovery of potential drug targets and development of therapeutic strategies. For each tool, we briefly describe its use case and how it advances research specifically for SARS-CoV-2. All tools are free to use and available online, either through web applications or public code repositories. Recent advancements in single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) have effectively resolved cellular phenotypic heterogeneity and the cell-type composition of complex tissues, facilitating the systematic investigation of cell-cell communications at single-cell resolution. However, assessment of chemical-signal-dependent cell-cell communication through scRNA-seq relies heavily on prior knowledge of LR interaction pairs. We constructed CellTalkDB (http//tcm.zju.edu.cn/celltalkdb), a manually curated comprehensive database of LR interaction pairs in humans and mice comprising 3398 human LR pairs and 2033 mouse LR pairs, through text mining and manual verification of known protein-protein interactions using the STRING database, with literature-supported evidence for each pair. Compared with SingleCellSignalR, the largest LR-pair resource, CellTalkDB includes not only 2033 mouse LR pairs but also 377 additional human LR pairs. In conclusion, the data on human and mouse LR pairs contained in CellTalkDB could help to further the inference and understanding of the LR-interaction-based cell-cell communications, which might provide new insights into the mechanism underlying biological processes. In trees, wood formation needs carbon import from the photosynthetic source tissues. Sugar transporters play important roles in carbohydrate transport into wood-forming cells. SWEETs (Sugars Will Eventually be Exported Transporters) play essential roles in many physiological processes. However, the roles of this family in the growth and development of woody plants have not been systematically investigated. In this study, 27 SWEET genes were identified in the Populus trichocarpa genome. These SWEET genes were classified into four clades based on their phylogenetic relationships, gene structures, conserved motifs, and chromosomal locations. Representative SWEET members from each clade were selected for further studies. The PagSWEETs were localized to plasma membrane, vacuolar, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) or Golgi. Real-time quantitative PCR analysis showed that PagSWEETs have distinct expression patterns in various tissues, and PagSWEET5, 7, 10b, 10c, 15b, 17a, and 17c exhibited high expression levels in stems. PagSWEET7 is localized to the cytoplasmic membrane and specifically expressed in the phloem as detected by histochemical GUS assays. Xylem production and xylem sugar content were greater in developing wood of SWEET7 overexpression (OX) than Wild-type (WT) lines. Collectively, these results provide valuable information for further investigating functions of PagSWEET genes, and identify PagSWEET7 as a candidate gene for using biotechnology to modify the wood formation in poplar.Juvenile systemic sclerosis (JSSc) is a rare disease of childhood and currently no international consensus exists with regard to its assessment and treatment. This SHARE (Single Hub and Access point for paediatric Rheumatology in Europe) initiative, based on expert opinion informed by the best available evidence, provides recommendations for the assessment and treatment of patients with JSSc with a view to improving their outcome. Experts focused attention not only on the skin assessment but also on the early signs of internal organ involvement whose proper treatment can significantly affect the long-term outcome. A score for disease severity is proposed in order to perform a structured assessment of outcome over time but a validation in a wider patient population is recommended. Finally, a stepwise treatment approach is proposed in order to unify the standard of care throughout Europe with the aim to reduce morbidity and mortality in this disease.
