Silymarin may be therapeutic in the treatment of NAFLD as well as other ER-stress-based diseases. Silymarin can also be taken with food for prophylactic purposes. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.We evaluated the effects of acute intake of biscuits (B) containing either spent coffee grounds (SCG), (added with fructooligosaccharides; SC-FOS) or SCG antioxidant dietary fiber (SCF), on satiety, energy intake as well as gastrointestinal tolerance of healthy overweight volunteers. The addition of SCG and SCF to the biscuits (SC-FOS-B and SCF-B) increased their protein (11.4% and 12.2%), and total dietary fiber (8.4% and 11.8%) contents. The SCF-B significantly increased satiety perception, impacting ad libitum energy intake compared to the traditional biscuits recipe (TB; no added fiber). Moreover, SC-FOS-B and SCF-B decreased (no-observed-adverse effect) the most frequently reported symptoms by the participants, demonstrating that doses up to 5 g of SCF (per biscuit portion; 45 g) are well tolerated. The use of SCF and SCG as functional ingredients represents a sustainable strategy for the coffee industry and also potentiates the reduction of overweight, one of the leading health problems among the population. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS The addition of SCF or SCG as food ingredients increases protein and the dietary fiber content of traditional biscuits. SCF can slow gastric emptying, modulate appetite and thus body weight. SCF attenuates carbohydrate digestion blunting post-prandial blood glucose spikes reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. SCF can be used as a functional ingredient to formulate foods with health benefits. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.Yunnan Baiyao (YNBY) has been refined for hundreds of years and has become a treasure of proprietary Chinese medicine that has significant curative effects in the field of hemostasis, blood circulation, and callus. In past years, YNBY has been demonstrated to play an anti-inflammatory role in bone-related diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. However, the osteoclasts are multinucleated giant cells that resorb bone and participate in the occurrence, development, and progression of these bone-related diseases. Previous studies have reported that the inflammatory function is closely associated with arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism, as well as some inflammatory-related pathways, including the nuclear factor кB (NF-кB), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and Wnt5a pathways. Therefore, we speculated that the anti-inflammatory effect of YNBY might be associated with the NF-кB, MAPK, and Wnt5a pathways. In order to further excavate the anti-inflammatory roles of YNBY, lipopolysaccharide (LPS)and wound ulcers, neonatal umbilitis, recurrent oral ulcers, esophagitis, bacterial dysentery, and so on. Although the detailed mechanism of action is not clear at present, it is believed that this is related to its anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, and immune-enhancing effects. Many bone-related diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis, are regarded to be intimately related to the inflammatory reaction. Thus, this study aimed to explore the underlying mechanisms of YNBY at anti-inflammatory roles. And our results suggested that YNBY directly affected the inflammatory cytokines and AA metabolic products which referred to the NF-кB, MAPK, and Wnt5a pathways, as well as AA metabolism, respectively. Hence, the practical applications of YNBY are the anti-inflammatory effects used to treat for bone-related diseases. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.The incidence of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (microPTC) has dramatically increased in the last decades. Most of these tumors remain small and clinically "silent", only small number progress. Although thyroid surgery used to be the only therapeutic approach, recent guidelines now consider active surveillance for low-risk microPTC. buy Tacrolimus For this reason, more accurate risk stratification of microPTC is needed. The optimal management of low-risk microPTC through accurate risk stratification represents a major clinical issue. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.BACKGROUND Whether decreased physical functioning of patients with mitochondrial disease (MD) is related to altered body composition or low protein intake needs clarification at the background of the nutrition state. METHODS In this 2-site cross-sectional study, MD patients were age-, body mass index (BMI)-, and gender-matched to controls. Body composition was assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Physical functioning was measured by handgrip strength, 6-minute walking test, 30-second sit-to-stand test (30SCT), and 6-minute mastication test. Total daily protein intake was calculated by 3-day food records. Malnutrition was assessed by Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment and the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria and sarcopenia by the 2018 consensus. Data were analyzed using independent samples t-tests, Fisher exact test, and Spearman and Pearson correlation coefficients. RESULTS Thirty-seven MD patients (42 ± 12 years, BMI 23 ± 4 kg/m2 , 59% females) and 37 matched controls were included. Handgrip strength was moderate, inversely related to fat mass index in both MD patients and controls, whereas it correlated with fat-free mass index in controls solely. Protein intake was associated with muscle strength (handgrip strength and 30SCT) in MD patients but not in controls. Twenty-seven MD patients (73%) were malnourished, and 5 (14%) were classified as sarcopenic. CONCLUSIONS Muscle strength is related to body composition and protein intake in MD patients. This, in combination with the high incidence of both malnutrition and sarcopenia, warrants individual nutrition assessment in MD patients. © 2020 The Authors. Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. on behalf of American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. In this work, the cinnamaldehyde (CA) loaded nanoparticles were synthesized by directly cross-linking chitosan hydrochloride (CSH) and sulfobutyl ether-β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD). The CA/SBE-β-CD inclusion complex was firstly prepared, and its highest encapsulation efficiency (EE) was 86.34%. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope results indicated that the inclusion complex showed massive aggregates with a coarse and fluffy texture and irregular surface. Then, the inclusion complex interacted with CSH to form nanoparticles. The EE of CA in nanoparticles was improved. Atomic force microscopy showed the nanoparticles had regular and spherical morphology. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis demonstrated that CA was mainly encapsulated in the inner place of CSH/SBE-β-CD nanoparticles (CSNs). The enhanced thermal stability of the nanoparticles was found in differential scanning calorimeter. X-ray diffraction implied that CA-CSNs existed in the amorphous state. CA-CSNs had excellent slow release property.
