Buying a Tandem Double Buggy

A tandem double buggy can be a fantastic option when you have twins or children who are close in age. They're narrower than side-by-side buggies and ideal for navigating tight spaces, such as entrances, on public transportation and rocky terrain.

Some can be converted to travel systems that take two carrycots or child car seats. However, they are heavier and longer than single pushchairs, and might feel less stable when bumping up the kerbs.

Convertible

There are a variety of options for adding a second seating or making a single stroller a double. The UPPAbaby Vista V2 is a big, beautiful stroller that easily converts from a single stroller to a double by adding the rumble seating (available separately). However, it's pricey and less maneuverable than other dual strollers since the second seat is located behind the front seat. Nuna Demi Grow offers a similar option however, it doesn't have storage underneath the seat when it's used as a double stroller.

Other options include twin buggies with all-terrain wheels and joggers with fixed wheels that can be used to carry two children. They are more expensive, but they are made to last longer on rough terrain and have more expensive resales.

Reclining double pram and pushchair

If you're looking for a double buggy that can carry children of different age groups, then you'll want one that has recline that is independent for both seats. This allows your older child to be able to relax while your baby is sleeping in a bassinet and reverse.

Consider the size of your pushchair to determine the ease of you to navigate through doors and on public transportation. If your doorways are very narrow, you may want to consider a side by side pushchair such as the Mountain Buggy Duet. It has a footprint that is similar to a single stroller however can still accommodate two seats and car seat adaptors.

Tandem buggies are generally smaller than side-byside models and so aren't as easily maneuverable through kerbs and up and down, however, they can accommodate a wider variety of car/car/seat combinations, making them a good option for twins or siblings of various age. They can also be more expensive than single-to double buggies, but are a good investment if you plan to keep it for a long time and have a good amount of resale value in the event that you decide to sell it when your children have grown out of it.

Another important feature to look for is whether the backs of the seats can recline independently of one another since this will allow you to put your child in the best position for naps or watching. This is especially important if you have a younger child in the rear seat, who will be inclined to lie down and sleep while the older child would prefer to sit up and observe their surroundings.

Certain brands come with a unique design for their seats that allows the back seat to fully recline to an almost flat position that is perfect for newborns. The iCandy Orange, for example is a stadium-style seat that can be reclined in multiple positions. It also has a UPF 50+ canopy and windows that peek out.

More spacious than twin buggies

They are great for siblings with different ages, and you can move around without having to worry about your children touching. They're typically a bit longer too with one seat placed behind the other, and typically providing a flat recline for newborns (or an upright position for toddlers).

A popular choice is the Mountain Buggy Duet, which is the tiniest side-by-side model available and has the same footprint as a single buggy. It has an adjustable handle that makes it easier for parents to push and a handbrake, which is helpful on steep hills. It is suitable for use right from birth, and can be used with a range of car seats and carrycots.

Another option is the iCandy Wave, which has the convenience of a single click to fold and is able to be used in duo or mono mode. The clever frame expands in width to accommodate an additional chair and can be used up to two car seats or carrycots. This makes it an ideal choice for older siblings that would like to sit together. It's a little larger than other models, but it feels light and has a comfortable suspension for curbs.

There are plenty of 3-wheeler tandems with inline tires that offer stability and quick steering. Take a look at Phil and Teds inline models or iCandy Peach and Pear buggies. They can be folded into a single buggy in case you have a small space at home, or need to transport it from the car to the bus station.

Be aware that a two-wheeled buggy will be more heavy and bulkier than one that is compact. Be sure you know what you want before you buy. It will be used on trains, buses, and subways frequently so it must be easy to manage and use. You may also need to juggle it onto and off the car seat when you take your children to nursery or school so you'll need to be aware it's easy to maneuver in tight spaces.

From birth, you are an ideal candidate

You'll need a stroller for the whole family, whether you're expecting twins or if you have a child after having your first. Double buggies are typically a bit heavier, bulkier and more expensive than single strollers, however they can also be easier to manoeuvre through narrower doors or around obstacles such as curbs. Many double buggies are compatible with piggyback boards (available from the manufacturer or as an accessory). This lets you transport three children at once.

Tandem pushchairs place one child in front of the other. They're a good option for children who are close in age and get along well. They're not completely safe. Siblings who are sitting side-by-side could kick or punch each other and children with different heights may fight over who sits taller. A tandem high-low model could solve this issue by elevating the seat at the rear, which will prevent your child's height from being on the bottom and not getting any view.

The iCandy Wave is a good choice for parents looking for a convertible double buggy with a carrycot that can accommodate both a newborn and an older child. It features a smart frame that expands widthways when you add the second seat, and folds to flattish storage. The seats are cushioned and comfortable, the straps easy to secure and the buckles are among the most comfortable we've seen on any of our tests. The canopy is large in size, UPF 50+ protection, and the window is peekaboo. Both seats can be reclined independently.

The only downside to the iCandy tandem is that it's a bit expensive. However, a quality tandem will last for years and retain an attractive resale value which means that in the end you'll probably recoup a portion of the cost. It doesn't come with the same range of seating options as some of our other top picks, but the iCandy is a good choice for families that don't want to spend a lot.
