In LPS-administered mice, BAM15 attenuated serum cytokines, organ injury (liver enzymes and serum creatinine), and tissue cytokines (livers and kidneys), in part, through the enhanced phosphorylated αAMPK, a sensor of ATP depletion with anti-inflammatory property, in the liver, and reduced inflammatory monocytes/macrophages (Ly6C +ve, CD11b +ve) in the liver as detected by Western blot and flow cytometry, respectively. In conclusion, a proof of concept for inflammation attenuation of BAM15 through metabolic interference-induced anti-inflammation on macrophages and hepatocytes was demonstrated as a new strategy of anti-inflammation in sepsis.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic respiratory condition. COPD causes a heavy burden on the patients through negative impacts on the quality of life and psychological health. The health belief model (HBM) is proposed and modified by several social psychologists and is confirmed to have benefits in the recovery of various diseases. This research aimed to explore the effects of the HBM-based intervention on anxiety, depression, and quality of life in COPD patients entering pulmonary rehabilitation (PR).

This research was conducted at the Tianjin Rehabilitation Recuperate Center of Chinese PLA in 2019. A total of 136 COPD patients were randomized into the intervention group and the control group. In the control group, patients received the PR program. In the intervention group, patients received both PR program and the HBM-based intervention. Quality of life was measured by the COPD assessment test. The outcomes of anxiety and depression were measured by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale.

The HBM-based intervention decreased both anxiety and depression scores among COPD patients. The COPD assessment test score was declined by the HBM-based intervention, which also decreased the serum levels of interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein in COPD patients entering PR.

The HBM-based intervention alleviates anxiety and depression, enhances quality of life, and inhibits inflammation in COPD patients entering PR.

Most such studies have concerned children and often have only involved measurement of F in 1 or 2 types of sample. The present study investigated the relationships of F concentrations in biomarkers of F exposure; including plasma, saliva, hair, finger- and toenails, and daily urinary F excretion (UFE) with the total daily F intake (TDFI) of adults. TDFI was assessed in 60 healthy adults, aged ≥20 years; 31 lived in a low-F water area (LFA, 0.04 mg F/L) and 29 in a high-F water area (HFA, 3.05 mg F/L) of Nigeria. All volunteers provided at least 1 biomarker sample from the above list and completed a questionnaire to evaluate F intake from the diet and toothpaste ingestion. TDFI, UFE and F concentrations of biomarkers were statistically significantly higher in the HFA than in the LFA. CC-885 in vitro There were strong statistically significant positive correlations between TDFI and UFE (ρ = 0.730, p less then 0.001); plasma F (ρ = 0.729, p less then 0.001); fasting whole saliva F (ρ = 0.653, p less then 0.001) and hair F (ρ = 0.603, p less then 0.001). The statistically significant positive correlations between TDFI and fingernail F (ρ = 0.502, p less then 0.001) and between TDFI and toenail F (ρ = 0.556, p less then 0.001) were moderate. In conclusion, this study has indicated the usefulness of 24-h UFE as well as F concentration in plasma, fasting whole saliva and hair as biomarkers of contemporary or sub-chronic F exposure in groups of adults. However, they do not appear to have the necessary sensitivity to predict F exposure in individuals.

Acne vulgaris is classified based on the severity of skin lesions and post-healing scar types of these lesions. Numerous epidemiology studies have investigated the risk factors associated with acne presentation and severity, but studies for acne scarring are lacking.

To investigate the prevalence of acne, severity, and scarring grades and their associated risk factors among Singapore Chinese.

A total of 3,888 subjects (2,090 cases/1,798 controls; median age = 21 ± 4.589; range 17-71) completed an investigator-administered questionnaire as part of a cross-sectional study, which included sociodemographics, familial medical history, lifestyle factors, dietary habits, and acne history. Acne cases were further evaluated for their severity (n = 991) and scarring (n = 988) grades by a trained personnel.

The majority of the acne cases had mild acne/grade 1 scarring, while less than 1% had severe acne/grade 4 scarring. Parental acne was significantly associated with acne presentation and moderate/severe acne, ry habits (milk and butter consumption) influence acne severity and scarring. The predisposing factors revealed in this study could help us to gain insights into acne pathophysiology and hence develop interventions especially targeting modifiable risk factors.

Positive familial history is a strong predisposing factor in determining acne presentation, severity, and scarring. Demographic factors (gender, age) and sedentary lifestyle (increased computer/TV usage) influence acne presentation, while dietary habits (milk and butter consumption) influence acne severity and scarring. The predisposing factors revealed in this study could help us to gain insights into acne pathophysiology and hence develop interventions especially targeting modifiable risk factors.

Curiosity, or the desire for novel information and/or experience, is associated with improved well-being and more informed decisions, which has implications on older adults' (OAs') adoption of novel technologies. There have been suggestions that curiosity tends to decline with age. However, it was rarely studied under specific contexts, and there were relatively limited attempts to enhance OAs' curiosity. Under the theoretical framework of selective engagement theory, we examined age differences of curiosity in the context of learning a novel technology and investigated the moderating role of personal relevance.

This study utilized a pretest-posttest experimental design with a total of 50 younger adults (YAs) and 50 OAs from Hong Kong to measure their trait curiosity, perceived personal relevance, and state curiosity toward robots after interacting with a robot.

OAs showed significantly lower trait curiosity than YAs, but OAs showed a higher level of state curiosity toward a robot than YAs when they perceived an increase in personal relevance after interacting with the robot.
