Capercaillie behavior, both in the wild and in captivity, is poorly known due to this species' secretive way of life. Female-male and female-female social organization and interactions are especially poorly documented. The research was conducted in Capercaillie Breeding Center in Wisła Forestry District where a breeding flock is kept throughout the year. Thanks to video monitoring, we were able to observe mate choice, and then later, female-female interactions during laying and incubation period. Male individual variation in tooting latency and duration were recorded. Females' interest in males was related to males' tooting activity, but when males became too insistent and started to chase the females, the females avoided contact with them. There was a significant relationship between calendar date and when tooting starts, and between the tooting duration the female spent with a male. Two incidents of female-male aggression caused by competition for food were observed. Female intruder presence and competition for nesting place was observed in 66.67% nests. Most female-female interactions were limited to threat posturing, but fights and attempts to push out the intruder from the nest occurred as well. Such interactions may lead to nest abandonment and egg destruction, lowering the breeding success.Both the ability of bacteria to form biofilms and communicate through quorum sensing allows them to develop different survival or virulence traits that lead to increased bacterial resistance against conventional antibiotic therapy. Here, seventeen essential oils (EOs) were investigated for the antimicrobial, antibiofilm, and anti-quorum sensing activities on Escherichia. coli O157H7, Escherichia coli O33, and Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228. Therefore, understanding the factors linked to patient survival is essential. Recently, multi-omics analysis has emerged, allowing for patient groups to be classified according to prognosis and at a more individual level, to support the use of precision medicine. Here, we combined RNA expression and miRNA expression with clinical information, to conduct a multi-omics analysis, using publicly available datasets (the cancer genome atlas (TCGA) focusing on lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD)). We were able to successfully subclass patients according to survival. The classifiers we developed, using inferred labels obtained from patient subtypes showed that a support vector machine (SVM), gave the best classification results, with an accuracy of 0.82 with the test dataset. Using these subtypes, we ranked genes based on RNA expression levels. The top 25 genes were investigated, to elucidate the mechanisms that underlie patient prognosis. Bioinformatics analyses showed that the expression levels of six out of 25 genes (ERO1B, DPY19L1, NCAM1, RET, MARCH1, and SLC7A8) were associated with LUAD patient survival (p less then 0.05), and pathway analyses indicated that major cancer signaling was altered in the subtypes.BACKGROUND The recently developed antiandrogen, Enzalutamide (Enz), has reformed the standard of care for castration resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) patients. However, Enz-resistance inevitably emerges despite success of Enz in prolonging CRPC patients' survival. Here we found that Enz-resistant prostate cancer (PCa) cells had higher BCL2 expression. We aimed to test whether targeting BCL2 would influence Enz sensitivity of prostate cancer (PCa) and identify the potential mechanism. METHODS The study was designed to target Enz-induced BCL2 with inhibitor ABT263 and test Enz sensitivity in Enz-resistant PCa cells by MTT assay. Cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were detected with dihydroethidium staining, and in vitro deubiquitinating enzyme activity assay was used to evaluate ubiquitin specific protease 26 (USP26) activity. RESULTS ABT263 could increase Enz sensitivity in both Enz-sensitive and Enz-resistant PCa cells via inducing ROS generation. Elevated cellular ROS levels might then inhibit USP26 activity to increase the ubiquitination of androgen receptor (AR) and AR splice variant 7 (ARv7) and their ubiquitin/proteasome-dependent degradation, which contributed to the increase of Enz sensitivity. In vivo mouse model also demonstrates that ABT263 will suppress the PCa progression. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that targeting Enz-induced BCL2 with inhibitor ABT263 could increase Enz sensitivity in both Enz-sensitive and Enz-resistant PCa cells through induction of cellular ROS levels and suppression of USP26 activity with a consequent increase of ubiquitin/proteasome-dependent degradation of AR and ARv7 protein expression.Occupational exposure to ultraviolet radiation is one of the main risk factors for non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) development. The most common variants of NMSC are basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and actinic keratosis (AK). The latter is nowadays considered by most authors as an early squamous cell carcinoma rather than a precancerous lesion. Outdoor workers have a higher risk of developing NMSC because they spend most of the working day outside. The aim of this descriptive study was to assess the prevalence of skin lesions, especially AK, in a professional category of individuals exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation the Italian Navy. From January to June 2016, a questionnaire and a total skin examination of 921 military personnel were administered by medical specialists (dermatologists) in seven different Italian Navy centres.
