Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.AIMS To examine the dual process of physical activity adoption among nurses and its relationships with two personal orientations-regulatory focus-the tendency to focus on promotion (vs. prevention) goals and time preference as measured by delay discounting the tendency to overvalue immediate rewards over long-term ones. BACKGROUND The dual process theory suggests that both conscious and non-conscious processes influence the adoption of physical activity. However, the role of regulatory focus and time preference in this process was not yet examined. DESIGN A cross-sectional online survey among 143 nurses during August-November 2017. METHODS Validated measures were used to estimate physical activity habit strength (a non-conscious process) and intention, planning and behaviour control (conscious processes), physical activity level, regulatory focus and time preference. Multivariable ordered logit and logistic models were specified to examine determinants of both processes. RESULTS Promotion focus was positively associated with having a strong habit of physical activity among nurses with moderate-to-low activity levels, but it was negatively associated with habit for active nurses. As for time preference, higher delay discounting was negatively associated with nurses' conscious intention to adopt physical activity and with their action planning. CONCLUSION Promotion focus and time preference are associated with both conscious and non-conscious processes of physical activity adoption among nurses and should be considered in future health promotion interventions targeted to this population. IMPACT Promotion focus and time preference have a significant role in this dual process. Enhancing physical activity of health providers by adjusting the intervention to personal orientations may improve public health. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.INTRODUCTION Temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) is a condition that affects the stomatognathic system. OBJECTIVE To determine the effect of treatment with an occlusal splint (OS), manual therapy (MT), counselling (CS) and the combination of an occlusal splint and counselling (OSCS) on pain and anxiety in patients with TMD. MATERIALS AND METHODS A randomised clinical trial was conducted with 89 patients diagnosed with TMD through RDC/TMD (Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders) and divided into four groups of treatment OSCS (n = 25); OS (n = 24); MT (n = 21); and CS (n = 19). Participants were assessed before and after 1 month of therapy for pain, anxiety and TMD diagnosis. Pain was measured by a visual analogue scale. To assess anxiety, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S and T) were used. The data were analysed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) 22.0. RESULTS The four groups obtained a significant reduction (P  less then  0.001) in the pain after 1 month of treatment. Treatment in all groups promoted a significant reduction in anxiety symptoms 1 month after completion, HADS (P  less then  0.001), BAI (P  less then  0.001), STAI-T (P = 0.006). Thus, no group was superior to the other in reducing the studied variables. CONCLUSION The therapies used were effective in reducing pain and anxiety in patients diagnosed with TMD. However, no treatment was superior to the other in reducing the studied variables. © 2020 FDI World Dental Federation.OBJECTIVES A child-friendly taste-masking strategy using solid lipid microsphere (SLM) has been proposed to obscure the undesirable taste of some water-soluble drugs. In this study, the reversed lipid-based nanoparticle (RLBN) technique was used to encapsulate a water-soluble drug to facilitate the preparation of SLM. METHODS The model drug used was atomoxetine hydrochloride (ATX), and a three-step method was used to prepare ATX-RLBN. Taste-masking microsphere (ATX-RLBN-SLM) was prepared by the spray chilling method. The drug release mechanism was studied by high-performance liquid chromatography and scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, in vitro taste evaluation method was established and ATX bioavailability was investigated employing pharmacokinetic studies. KEY FINDINGS The obtained ATX-RLBN-SLM had smooth spherical particles with a size of about 80 μm. The drug encapsulation and loading efficiencies were 98.28% ± 0.59% and 0.89% ± 0.04%, respectively. In vitro drug release studies showed that nearly 96% drug was retained in the microspheres within 10 min at pH 6.8 and a complete release was triggered by lipase, accompanied by variation in the morphology. Taste assessment revealed that ATX-RLBN-SLM could efficiently mask the bitter taste and improved the bioavailability of ATX. CONCLUSIONS Atomoxetine hydrochloride-reversed lipid-based nanoparticle-solid lipid microsphere exhibited excellent taste-masking effect with negligible leakage in the oral cavity environment and thorough collapse upon lipase stimulation, simultaneously enhancing the bioavailability of ATX. The study paves a new way to efficiently mask the undesirable taste of some water-soluble drugs. © 2020 Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
