Prehabilitation is a promising modality for improving patient-related outcomes after major surgery; however, very little research has been done for those who may need it the most the elderly and the frail. Although the benefits of physical activity (PA) on health are recognised, prostate cancer patients do not follow PA recommendations. The barriers to PA, whether physical, environmental or organisational, are known. Furthermore, even when such barriers are overcome, this achievement is not systematically accompanied by a change in lifestyle habits. Recently, it was revealed that uric acid is a photosensitizer of reactions of nucleosides on irradiation with UV light at wavelengths longer than 300 nm, and two products generated from 2'-deoxycytidine were identified. In the present study, UV reactions of acetylated derivatives of 2'-deoxyguansoine and 2'-deoxyadenosine were conducted and their products were identified.

Each reaction of 3',5'-di-O-acetyl-2'-deoxyguansoine or 3',5'-di-O-acetyl-2'-deoxyadenosine with UV light at wavelengths longer than 300 nm in the presence of uric acid generated several products. The products were separated by HPLC and identified by comparing UV and MS spectra of the products with previously reported values. The major products were spiroiminodihydantoin, imidazolone, and dehydro-iminoallantoin nucleosides for 3',5'-di-O-acetyl-2'-deoxyguansoine, and an adenine base and a formamidopyrimidine nucleoside for 3',5'-di-O-acetyl-2'-deoxyadenosine.

Milk exosomes and their microRNA (miR) cargos are bioavailable. The content of exosomes and miRs is negligible in infant formulas compared to human milk, and dietary depletion of exosomes led to changes in bacterial communities and impaired gut health in juvenile mice. Adverse effects of formula feeding may be compounded by using soy formulas due to exosome binding by abundant lectins in that matrix. The purpose of this study was to assess the bioavailability of milk exosomes and their miR cargos added to soy formula in adults, as well as the potential role of soy lectins in exosome bioavailability.

Eleven healthy adults (6 men, 5 women) enrolled in this randomized crossover study. Participants consumed 1.0 l of soy formula without (SF) or with (SFE) bovine milk exosomes added. Concentration-time curves of six plasma miRs were analyzed using reverse transcription quantitative PCR. Lectin affinity chromatography was used to assess the binding of exosomes by soy lectins. Data were analyzed by using paired t test. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Consumption of SF and SFE did not elicit postprandial increases in plasma miRs. Approximately 39% of bovine milk exosome particles were retained by lectin columns.

We conclude that fortification of soy formulas with milk exosomes, in the absence of removing lectins, is not a viable strategy for delivering bioavailable exosomes and their miR cargos. Lectins in soy formulas bind glycoprotein on the surfaces of milk exosomes, thereby preventing exosome absorption.

Antimicrobial resistance is swiftly increasing all over the world. In Africa, it manifests more in pathogenic bacteria in form of antibiotic resistance (ABR). On this continent, bacterial contamination of commonly used herbal medicine (HM) is on the increase, but information about antimicrobial resistance in these contaminants is limited due to fragmented studies. Here, we analyzed research that characterized ABR in pathogenic bacteria isolated from HM in Africa since 2000; to generate a comprehensive understanding of the drug-resistant bacterial contamination burden in this region.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a serious complication of diabetes. Numerous reports have validated that circular RNAs (circRNAs) participate in DR progression. This study aimed to elucidate the role and potential mechanism of circRNA zinc finger protein 532 (circZNF532) in DR.

The levels of circZNF532, miR-1243, and coactivator associated arginine methyltransferase 1 (CARM1) in DR patients and human retinal microvascular endothelial cells (hRMECs) were determined by quantitative real-time PCR and western blot. Colony formation assay, transwell assay, tube formation assay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were used to assess the biological function of hRMECs. The binding relationship between miR-1243 and circZNF532/CARM1 was verified by dual-luciferase reporter and RNA immunoprecipitation assays.

circZNF532 and CARM1 levels were increased, while miR-1243 level was reduced in DR patients and high glucose (HG)-stimulated hRMECs. In terms of mechanism, miR-1243 competitively bound to circZNF532 and CARM1. Down-regulation of circZNF532 restrained HG-induced hRMECs proliferation, migration, invasion, angiogenesis and inflammation via regulating miR-1243. In addition, miR-1243 inhibited HG-triggered hRMECs progression via targeting CARM1.

circZNF532 facilitated HG-induced angiogenesis and inflammation in hRMECs via modulating the miR-1243/CARM1 pathway, suggesting that circZNF532 might be a potential biomarker for DR treatment.
