Emotional intelligence (EI) refers to a person's ability to evaluate and manage their personal emotions and the ability to respond appropriately to the emotions of others. Limited evidence exists regarding whether EI is related to professionalism.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate for relationships between EI and professionalism among second-year dental students.

Using a quantitative cross-sectional research design, the study instrument consisted of 3 parts (1) The Emotional Quotient Self-Assessment Checklist (EQSAC), including 30 questions comprising 6 domains that measured EI; (2) The Patient Management and Professionalism Scale (PMPS), including 10 questions comprising 5 domains that measured professionalism; and (3) Demographic questions.

The response rate was 99.2% (n = 117) of second-year dental students. Most EI and professionalism scores were in the moderate range. Female participants had higher domain scores for agreeableness and conscientiousness compared with male participants. Male participants had higher domain scores for emotional stability than female participants. The EI domains were found to be significant predictors of total and domain professionalism levels.

Understanding methods to improve EI levels may assist dental students in their development of professionalism.

In this study, we attempt an ecosystem-level physiological approach of estimating GPP using an asymptotic light response function (LRF) between GPP and incoming photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) that better represents the response observed at high spatiotemporal resolutions than the conventional light use efficiency approach. Modelled GPP is thereafter constrained with meteorological and hydrological variables. The variability in field-observed GPP, net primary productivity and solar-induced fluorescence was better or equally well captured by our LRF-based GPP when compared with six state-of-the-art Earth observation-based GPP products. Over the period 1982-2015, the LRF-based average annual global terrestrial GPP budget was 121.8 ± 3.5 Pg C, with a detrended inter-annual variability of 0.74 ± 0.13 Pg C. The strongest inter-annual variability was observed in semi-arid regions, but croplands in China and India also showed strong inter-annual variations. The trend in global terrestrial GPP during 1982-2015 was 0.27 ± 0.02 Pg C year-1 , and was generally larger in the northern than the southern hemisphere. Most positive GPP trends were seen in areas with croplands whereas negative trends were observed for large non-cropped parts of the tropics. Trends were strong during the eighties and nineties but levelled off around year 2000. DOX Antineoplastic and I inhibitor Other GPP products either showed no trends or continuous increase throughout the study period. This study benchmarks a first global Earth observation-based model using an asymptotic light response function, improving simulations of GPP, and reveals a stagnation in the global GPP after the year 2000.

Duodenal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) patients. In this study, we compare oncologic outcomes between sporadic and FAP-associated duodenal cancer.

In this retrospective study, all patients who underwent surgeries between 2000 and 2014 for either sporadic or FAP duodenal cancer were identified. The patients were grouped based on diagnoses and perioperative and survival outcomes were compared.

A total of 56 patients with duodenal cancer (43 sporadic, 13 FAP) who underwent surgery were identified. Pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) was the most common procedure performed. The overall median survival was 7.5 years (1 year 92%; 5 years 58.1%). FAP patients had earlier tumor, node, and metastasis stage, less margin involvement, less perineural, and angiolymphatic invasion but had a comparable survival to sporadic patients. The median survival for FAP duodenal cancer was 7.4 vs 9.6 years for sporadic (P = .97) with similar utilization of adjuvant chemotherapy. Although not statistically significant, PD had an improved median survival compared to segmental duodenal resection (SDR) (9.6 years for PD vs 3.6 years for SDR, P = .17). Non-periampullary location and presence of positive lymph nodes were significant predictors of mortality on multivariate analysis.

FAP duodenal cancer has no survival advantage compared to sporadic duodenal cancer despite an improved stage of resection with extraampullary lesions having a worse survival.

The current paper examines the ameliorative effect of mangiferin (MAN) in vascular endothelial cells induced through activating the Nrf2 signalling pathway on dietary DON-induced oxidative changes. The study infers that the intercellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and malondialdehyde decrease due to MAN. Other effects include in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), the oxidative stress-induced cell damage is reduced due to protective effects and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activities also reveal an improvement. In HUVECs, the Nrf2-regulated antioxidant enzyme genes' expression is activated by Nrf2 nuclear translocation induction and this activity suppresses the oxidative stress damage. The genes in HUVECs include HO-1 and NQO1. Moreover, in HUVECs, the nucleus translocation of Nrf2 reduces the Nrf2, HO-1, whereas NQO1 expression decreases the cytoprotective effects against oxidative stress reduce with the rejection of Nrf2 with siRNA. This paper pioneers in inferring that oxidative stress-induced HUVECs' cell injury is suppressed by MAN through Nrf2, signalling pathway activation.

Computed tomography (CT) is a useful tool for the identification of calcified lesions in the aorta. However, no quantitative evaluation has been established to assess the applicability of simple anastomosis preoperatively. We conducted this retrospective study to establish a reference range of maximal CT attenuation values for application of simple anastomosis.

A total of 122 consecutive patients underwent replacement of the thoracic aorta between 2007 and 2011, excluding those with acute aortic dissection. The patients were divided into two groups those who underwent simple anastomosis (simple group n = 105), and those who required endarterectomy before anastomosis (manipulation group n = 17). The maximal CT attenuation values at the anastomosis site were calculated by imaging software.

The mean maximal CT attenuation values (Hounsfield unit [HU]) was significantly higher in the manipulation group (638.1 ± 269.5 [166-1304]) than in the simple group (94.7 ± 171.5 [0-790]; p < .0001). The maximal CT attenuation values enabled us to predict the simple anastomosis with the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.96 (p < .0001). The cut-off value was 325 HU (sensitivity 94.1%, specificity 81.7%). The 10-year survival rate was significantly lower in the manipulation group (11.8%) than in the simple group (43.2%). In the multivariate analysis, age (hazard ratio [HR] 1.073), hypertension (HR 2.382), and maximal CT attenuation values (HR 1.001) were independently associated with long-term mortality.

Preoperative evaluation of the maximal CT attenuation values is a useful tool in predicting whether simple anastomosis is applicable or not. Maximal CT attenuation values is a risk factor for long-term mortality.

Brown midrib 12 (bmr12) encodes the sorghum caffeic acid O-methyltransferase (COMT) and is one of the key enzymes in monolignol biosynthesis. Loss of function mutations in COMT reduces syringyl (S) lignin subunits and improves biofuel conversion rate. Although lignin plays an important role in maintaining cell wall integrity of xylem vessels, physiological and molecular consequences due to loss of COMT on root growth and adaptation to water deficit remain unexplored. We addressed this gap by evaluating the root morphology, anatomy and transcriptome of bmr12 mutant. The mutant had reduced lateral root density (LRD) and altered root anatomy and response to water limitation. The wild-type exhibits similar phenotypes under water stress, suggesting that bmr12 may be in a water deficit responsive state even in well-watered conditions. bmr12 had increased transcript abundance of genes involved in (a)biotic stress response, gibberellic acid (GA) biosynthesis and signaling. We show that bmr12 is more sensitive to exogenous GA application and present evidence for the role of GA in regulating reduced LRD in bmr12. These findings elucidate the phenotypic and molecular consequences of COMT deficiency under optimal and water stress environments in grasses. The tricuspid valve can be affected in left-sided infective endocarditis. We present a new technique to repair anteroseptal tricuspid valve commissure. It was employed in a patient with left-sided infective endocarditis with intervalvular fibrous body abscess. A sliding plasty of septal and posterior leaflets was performed, reaching the anteroseptal commissure with the aid of De-Vega like annuloplasty.Cerebral glucose hypometabolism is a common pathophysiological characteristic of many neurodegenerative diseases. This metabolic dysfunction includes alterations in glucose transport from the blood into the neurons by the facilitative glucose transporters (GLUTs). Several studies suggest that metabolic disturbances precede clinical symptoms and correlate with disease progression. Some groups have started to explore the use of therapeutic strategies that target decreased cerebral glucose metabolism to promote its availability. We selected Andrographolide (Andro), a natural product obtained from Andrographis paniculate that has both anti-hyperglycemic and anti-diabetic effects. Although it was shown to promote glucose uptake in vivo, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we evaluated the acute effects of Andro on glucose transport and metabolism using primary rat hippocampal neuronal cultures. Our results showed that Andro enhances neuronal glucose uptake and stimulates glucose metabolism by inducing GLUT3 and 4 expression in neurons, as well as by promoting glycolysis.
