To determine if the clinical characteristics of children with gastroenteritis and influenza identified in their stool differ from those whose stool was influenza-negative.

Children <18-years with gastroenteritis whose stool tested negative for enteropathogen were tested for influenza in stool. The clinical features between influenza-positive and influenza-negative gastroenteritis cases were compared. Stools from controls without infection were also tested for influenza.

Among the 440 gastroenteritis cases, those who were influenza test-positive were older [median age 4.0 (IQR 2.3, 5.5) vs. 1.5 (IQR 0.5, 4.0) years; P = 0.008], more likely to present in fall or winter (92.3 % vs. 48.0 %; P = 0.001), be febrile (84.6 % vs. 30.6 %; P < 0.001), have respiratory symptoms (91.7 % vs. 44.8 %; P = 0.002), have dehydration [median Clinical Dehydration Scale score 4 (IQR 1.5, 4.5) vs. 2 (IQR 0, 3); P = 0.034], and have higher Modified Vesikari Scale scores [median 13 (IQR 10.5, 14.0) vs. 10 (IQR 9.0, 13.0); P = 0.044], than those who tested negative. Thirteen gastroenteritis cases (13/440; 3.0 %) including one child without respiratory symptoms vs. one control (1/250; 0.4 %) were influenza stool positive.

Epilepsy is a major public health concern in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in resource-limited rural villages where persons with epilepsy (PWE) are often confronted with a wide treatment gap, frequent stigma and high cost of epilepsy care. We investigated stigma and economic cost related to epilepsy in the states of Maridi and Amadi in South Sudan, two onchocerciasis endemic areas with high epilepsy prevalence.

This study surveyed a national sample of primary care trainee physicians and compared their views with those of primary care attending physicians (i.e., those who have completed training).

Random samples of 1,000 trainee physicians and 1,000 attending physicians specializing in family, internal, or general medicine were selected from the American Medical Association Masterfile. Surveys were mailed February-August 2019. 45 % of eligible trainee physicians and 54 % of eligible attending physicians responded. Chi-square tests were used to compare responses between the groups.

Trainee physicians were more likely than attending physicians to agree that treating OUD with medication is more effectiverom OUD, and increasing support for clinicians that provide medication treatment for OUD may strengthen this group's capacity to respond to the opioid crisis.

Racism, and resultant racial/ethnic discrimination is a ubiquitous social determinant of health that is linked to adverse alcohol-related outcomes. To our knowledge, no studies have examined whether manifestations of racial/ethnic discrimination increase risk of DSM-5 alcohol use disorder (AUD) severity levels.

Analyses were conducted among 17,115 racial/ethnic minority respondents of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol-Related Conditions III (NESARC-III), a cross-sectional survey fielded in 2012-2013. We used multinomial logistic regression to examine the associations between measures of racial/ethnic discrimination and past-year AUD severity levels following the DSM-5 definition, while adjusting for poverty thresholds set by the U.S. Census Bureau, and race/ethnicity (American Indian or Alaskan Native; Asian, Native Hawaiian, or Other Pacific Islander; Black or African American; Hispanic or Latino). Triptolide (TP) exhibits effective activity against colon cancer in multiple preclinical models, but the mechanisms underlying the observed effects are not fully understood. Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is a potent bioactive sphingolipid involved in the regulation of colon cancer progression. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of TP on the sphingosine kinase (SPHK)-S1P signaling pathway in colitis-associated colon cancer.

An azoxymethane (AOM)/dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) mouse model and the THP-1 cell line were used to evaluate the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of TP in colitis-associated colon cancer (CACC). Various molecular cell biology experiments, including Western blotting, real-time PCR and immunofluorescence, were used to obtain relevant experimental data. A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was also established to detect the levels of S1P in tissue and plasma.

In the AOM/DSS mouse model, TP treatment induced a dose-dependent decrease in tumor incidence and inhibited macrophage recruitment and M2 polarization in the tumors. TP also efficiently decreased the S1P levels and SPHK1/S1PR1/S1PR2 expression and significantly inhibited activation of the S1P-mediated phosphorylation of ERK protein in macrophages.

As to livestock wastewater, the high-strength occurrence of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes might induce struvite recovery to spread antibiotic resistance to the environment. However, limited information has been reported on the simultaneous transport of antibiotics and ARGs in struvite recovery. In the present study, tetracyclines (TCs) and tetracyclines antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were selected as the targeted pollutants, and their discrepant residues in struvite recovery from swine wastewater were investigated. TCs and ARGs were obviously detected, with their contents of 4.88-79.5 mg/kg and 6.99 × 107-2.14 × 1011 copies/g, notably higher than those of TCs 0.550-1.94 mg/kg and ARGs 3.98 × 104-5.66 × 107 copies/g obtained from synthetic wastewater. The correlational relationship revealed that predominant factors affecting TCs and ARGs transports were different. Results from network analyses indicated that among the total edges, the negative correlations between TCs and ARGs predominately occupied 18.0%. The redundancy analysis revealed that mineral components in the recovered products, including struvite, K-struvite and amorphous calcium phosphate, coupling with organic contents, displayed insignificant roles on TCs residues, where heavy metals exerted positive and remarkable functions to boost TCs migration. The objectives of this cross-sectional study were to estimate the seroprevalence and associated risk factors of PPR in small ruminants in selected districts of Horo Guduru Zone, Western Ethiopia. A total of 806 blood samples, corresponding to 124 flocks comprised of 387 sheep and 419 goats, were collected using multi-stage sampling. The sera were tested using competitive Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (c-ELISA). A pre-tested questionnaire was used to collect data on potential risk factors for PPRV infection. Pearson's Chi-Square and logistic regression analyses were used to see the association of the seroprevalence with potential risk factors. The flock-level overall seroprevalence of PPR was 27.42% (95% confidence interval [CI] 19.79-36.15%). An overall animal level seroprevalence of 5.71% (95% CI 4.21-7.54%) was recorded with 6.98% (95% CI 4.65-10.00%) seroprevalence in sheep and 4.53% (95% CI 2.75-6.99%) in goats. There was a significant association between the seroprevalence and risk factors that were sharing common grazing land (P = 0.032), the introduction of newly purchased animals into the flock (P = 0.011), and uncontrolled animal movements in goats (P = 0.018). Sharing common grazing land with other flocks in goats (P = 0.026) and midland altitude in sheep (P = 0.029) were the other predictors of PPR. The seropositivity in unvaccinated small ruminants suggests the circulation of the virus. Therefore, awareness creation, vaccination, strengthening the disease surveillance system and large-scale epidemiological and molecular studies are suggested.Canine malignant melanoma is a common cancer with a high mortality rate. Although previous studies have evaluated various aspects of this tumour, the exact mechanism of tumourigenesis remains unknown. Epigenetic mechanisms, such as DNA methylation, have recently gained attention as aetiological factors for neoplasia in humans. This study aimed to analyse genome-wide DNA methylation patterns in canine malignant melanoma based on next-generation sequencing data. A total of 76,213 CpG sites, including 29,482 sites in CpG islands (CGIs), were analysed using next-generation sequencing of methylation-specific signatures, obtained by sequential digestion with enzymes, to compare normal oral mucosal samples from four healthy dogs, four canine melanoma cell lines (3 oral cavity and 1 skin), and five clinical samples of oral canine melanoma. Malignant melanoma showed increased methylation at thousands of normally unmethylated CpG sites in CGIs and decreased methylation at normally methylated CpG sites in non-CGIs. Interestingly, the promoter regions of 81-393 genes were hypermethylated; 23 of these genes were present in all melanoma cell lines and melanoma clinical samples.
