Hemodiafiltration (HDF) is not associated with lower mortality risk compared to standard hemodialysis (HD). However, there are many critical clinical outcomes in dialysis patients in addition to mortality; the impact of HDF on these other outcomes is not clear. This retrospective study included all patients referred to DaVita Clinics in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. High-flux HD was the initial modality in all patients. Those who did not achieve adequacy targets or those with poorly controlled phosphorus were switched to postdilution HDF using 18 to 23 L exchange per treatment. Patients dialyzing with a central venous catheter, patients who dialyzed less than 90 days at DaVita, and those with interrupted HDF were excluded. Of the 1115 patients, 215 (19%) were on HDF and 900 on high-flux HD; the median follow-up was 6 months for all patients. The HDF group showed a significant reduction in serum phosphate (P less then .001), a significant increase in serum calcium (P less then .012) and a significant improvement in Kt/V (P less then .0001). The HDF group had significantly higher hemoglobin levels than the HD group (P = .024), with a significant reduction in weekly erythropoiesis-stimulating agent dose after starting HDF (P less then .001). A modified protocol that included prolonged dialysis duration, larger-sized dialyzer, faster blood flow rates, and adding hemofiltration fluid may be helpful in achieving the recommended targets. Thus, HDF can enable the achievement of adequate dialysis care in some patients. Randomized-controlled clinical trials are necessary to confirm these findings. © 2020 International Society for Apheresis, Japanese Society for Apheresis, and Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy. Here, a thin and foldable porous reduced graphene oxide (rGO) fabricated by a solvent casting method (SC-rGO) is introduced. The SC-rGO is superior to aluminum as a positive triboelectric material in triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), significantly enhancing TENG output performance. The film shows extremely foldable features, where it could be folded by 1/16 size. The electrical properties and device performance of SC-rGO are optimized varying thicknesses from 5 to 30 µm. A 30 µm thick TENG with a non-annealed SC-rGO film (STENG) shows the highest output of about 255 µW cm-2 due to its high carrier concentration, low work function, and high surface area. After annealing, STENG performance is optimized with a 10 µm thick SC-rGO because their work functions decreases, while the corresponding carrier concentrations decrease according to the thickness of the SC-rGO films. The SC-rGO films are highly durable and stable, where their output and conductivity show negligible changes after 100 000 cycles of mechanical deformation. A large SC-rGO with a size of 13 × 3 cm2 is fabricated and is attached inside a person's arm to demonstrate the shape-adaptive characteristics. Consequently, 170 V is obtained and it turns on 19 green light emitting diodes by simply touching the STENG. ©2020 The Authors published by Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Besides the possible consequences of COVID-19 infection on a pregnant woman and the fetus, a major concern is related to the potential effect on neonatal outcome, the appropriate management of the mother-newborn dyad and finally the compatibility of maternal COVID-19 infection with breastfeeding. selleckchem The Italian Society on Neonatology (SIN) after reviewing the limited scientific knowledge on the compatibility of breastfeeding in the COVID-19 mother and the available statements from Health Care Organizations, has issued the following indications that have been endorsed by the Union of European Neonatal & Perinatal Societies (UENPS). If a mother previously identified as COVID-19 positive or under investigation for COVID-19 is asymptomatic or paucisymptomatic at delivery, rooming-in is feasible and direct breastfeeding is advisable, under strict measures of infection control. On the contrary, when a mother with COVID-19 is too sick to care for the newborn, the neonate will be managed separately and fed fresh expressed breast milk, with no need to pasteurize it, as human milk is not believed to be a vehicle of COVID-19. We recognize that this guidance might be subject to change in the future when further knowledge will be acquired about the COVID-19 pandemic, the perinatal transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and clinical characteristics of cases of neonatal COVID-19. It often occurs in CHARGE syndrome, but can occur in isolation (1). Bilateral cases usually present with respiratory distress within the first few hours or days of life, as neonates are obligate nasal breathers. Unilateral cases may present early in life, but diagnosis is often delayed, as a single patent nasal passage typically allows satisfactory ventilation. This article is protected by copyright. A genomewide methylation study was performed on DNA from pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and endocrine pancreas tumors. Validation of DNA methylation patterns and concomitant alterations in expression of gene candidates was performed on patient samples and pancreatic cancer cell lines. Furthermore, validation was done on independent data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). Finally, droplet digital PCR was employed to detect DNA methylation marks in cell-free (cf) DNA isolated from plasma samples of PDAC patients and cancer-free blood donors. Hypermethylation of the SST gene (encoding somatostatin) and concomitant downregulation of its expression were discovered in PDAC and endocrine tumor tissues while not being present in chronic pancreatitis (inflamed) tissues and normal pancreas. Fittingly, treatment with a somatostatin agonist (octreotide) reduced cell proliferation and migration of pancreatic cancer cells.
