Introduction Endovascular revascularization has become the preferred treatment for most patients with iliac artery obstructions, with a high rate of clinical and technical success. Areas covered This review will describe novel developments in the diagnosis and treatment of iliac artery obstructions including the augmentation of preprocedural imaging with advanced flow models, image fusion techniques, and state-of-the-art device-tracking capabilities. Expert opinion The combination of these developments will change the endovascular field within the next 5 years, allowing targeted iliac treatment without the need for radiographic imaging or iodinated contrast media.Firefighters' activities increase the risk of sudden cardiac events. The main objective of this study was to describe the Loire firefighters' cardiovascular risk factors according to their cardiovascular risk and to their professional status. A retrospective study of the entire population of firefighters of the Loire department was conducted. Risk factors derived from the data collected during the occupational health follow-up medical examinations were described and the cardiovascular risk was assessed for 417 firefighters. The most frequent cardiovascular risk factors were overweight and obesity (62.1%), high blood pressure (27.8%) and active smoking (16,1%). There were no significant differences between career firefighters and volunteers. The prevalence of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases is less than in the general population. Obesity remains the most common risk factor, especially among firefighters with high cardiovascular risk.Background Verbal autopsy is designed to ascertain causes of death that are not registered or certified. CFTR modulator Verbal autopsy has been validated in multiple settings but has not been as widely evaluated for older populations as for younger age groups. Objective This study aims to provide empirical evidence of the value of verbal autopsy interviews in the context of population-based surveys of older adults by comparing the cause-of-death assignments derived from two methods of interpreting verbal autopsy data. Methods Data used in this study come from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, a nationally representative longitudinal survey of older Chinese. We compared 407 causes of death determined using InterVA, which is a computer-coded method, and causes of death as assigned by experts; then evaluated factors that affect the results of the two approaches. Results Among the 407 deaths, neoplasms, cardiac disease, and stroke are the leading causes of death according to both approaches. The consistency of the two approaches is about 45% at the individual level. The primary reason for the mismatch is that no cause of death could be assigned for more than 25% of the sample based on expert review. A higher likelihood of mismatch is associated with advanced age and a long period between death and verbal autopsy interview. link2 Conclusion Both approaches identify the same leading causes of death at the aggregate level, but consistency is relatively low at the individual level. InterVA works well when causes of death are characterized by distinctive signs and symptoms. Grouping the various causes of death with shared etiology or common risk factors may help improve the quality of the ascertainment of causes of death. Open-ended narratives are helpful because they provide information about the circumstances surrounding the death that are not available in the structured verbal autopsy interviews.Plant disease is a major threat to crop production, and fungicide application is one of the most effective methods to control plant disease. With emerging issues related to toxic residues and pathogen resistance, new fungicides with novel modes of action are urgently needed. SYP-14288 is a novel fungicide that could efficiently promote respiration and inhibit ATP biosynthesis in target organisms, but its bioactivity against various plant pathogens and exact mode of action are still unknown. In this study, we found that SYP-14288 is highly effective against 31 important plant pathogens belonging to a range of taxonomic groups. In addition, SYP-14288 has demonstrated excellent activity against all life stages of the important fungal plant pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae and is especially effective during the pathogen's high energy consumption stages. SYP-14288 showed good preventative control efficacy against pepper blight and rice blast in the greenhouse and field, respectively. In an untargeted metabolomics assay designed to determine the exact mode of action of SYP-14288, significant changes occurred in 25 metabolites, with the accumulation of seven fatty acid metabolites and a decrease in 18 starch and sugar metabolites (e.g., from the tricarboxylic acid cycle). link3 This suggests that SYP-14288 is an uncoupling agent similar to 2,4-dinitrophenol, which can allow for accumulation of various fatty acids after destroying oxidative phosphorylation coupling, thereby inhibiting the growth of the phytopathogen. These results indicate that the novel uncoupler SYP-14288 is a promising agrochemical in plant disease management.Wheat leaf rust, caused by Puccinia triticina, is a common fungal disease of wheat in China. In order to identify races and determine the individual virulence of isolates in different wheat-growing regions in China, leaf rust samples collected from 18 provinces in 2011 to 2013 were tested on 37 Thatcher near-isogenic lines each carrying a different single leaf rust resistance gene. A total of 158 races were identified. Races THTT (19.5%), THTS (16.9%), PHTT (7.7%), THJS (5.0%), THJT (4.2%), and PHTS (4.0%) were the most predominant races in 2011 to 2013. All of these races were avirulent to resistance genes Lr9 and Lr24. The two most frequent races, THTT and THTS, were widely distributed. The frequencies of the isolates with virulence to Lr1, Lr2c, Lr3, Lr16, Lr26, Lr17, LrB, Lr10, Lr14a, Lr3bg, Lr14b, Lr33, Lr37, and Lr50 exceeded 90%. Frequencies of virulence to Lr2a, Lr3ka, Lr11, Lr30, Lr2b, and Lr32 exceeded 70% but were less than 90%. Frequencies of virulence to Lr18, Lr21, Lr15, Lr23, Lr33+34, Lr36, Lr39, and Lr44 were below 70%, whereas the frequency of virulence to Lr25 was less than 1%. All isolates were avirulent to Lr9, Lr19, Lr24, Lr28, Lr42, Lr29, Lr38, and Lr47. The identified races and individual virulence frequencies provide a basis for selection of effective leaf rust resistance genes for use in breeding programs and can also provide information for the study of race evolution of P. triticina.Objective The construct of Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT) is characterized by daydreaming, mental confusion, staring blankly and hypoactivity. Our main goal was to explore neuropsychological differences in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder-Inattentive presentation (ADHD-IA) groups with and without SCT symptoms compared to healthy controls. After detecting specific neuropsychological differences, we examined white matter microstructure using Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) data obtained from 3.0 Tesla MRI scans of the cases with SCT symptoms comparing to Typically Developing (TD) controls.Method In this study, we included 24 cases in the ADHD-IA group with SCT symptoms, 57 cases in the ADHD-IA group without SCT symptoms and, 24 children in the TD group. We applied tract-based spatial statistics to the DTI measures for obtaining fractional anisotropy (FA), axial, radial and mean diffusivity (AD, RD, MD) to explore white matter differences for the whole brain.Results Omission error scores and longer reaction time scores were specifically associated with inattention symptoms. Commission error scores were significantly and specifically related to SCT symptoms. Cases with SCT symptoms presented increased FA in the bilateral anterior and posterior limb of the internal capsule, bilateral cerebral peduncle, and the fornix than TD group.Conclusions Neurobiological differences in ADHD cases are still relatively unexplored. We suggest that including an assessment for SCT in the neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies of ADHD may provide more consistent results.In France, the implementation of mutant herbicide-tolerant crops and the use of the related herbicides - sulfonylureas and imidazolinones - have triggered a strong societal reaction illustrated by the intervening actions of environmentalist groups illegally mowing such crops. Trials are in progress, and therefore should be addressed the questions of the environmental risks and the toxicity of these herbicides for the animals and humans consuming the products derived from these plants. Regulatory authorities have allowed these mutant and herbicide-tolerant plants arguing that the herbicides against which they resist only target an enzyme found in 'weeds' (the acetolactate synthase, ALS), and that therefore all organisms lacking this enzyme would be endowed with immunity to these herbicides. The toxicological literature does not match with this argument 1) Even in organisms displaying the enzyme ALS, these herbicides impact other molecular targets than ALS; 2) These herbicides are toxic for animals, organisms that do not possess the enzyme ALS, and especially invertebrates, amphibians and fish. In humans, epidemiological studies have shown that the use and handling of these toxins are associated with a significantly increased risk of colon and bladder cancers, and miscarriages. In agricultural soils, these herbicides have a persistence of up to several months, and water samples have concentrations of some of these herbicides above the limit value in drinking water.Flavonoids-compounds abundant in balanced daily diets-have been extensively investigated for biological activity. The pronounced antiproliferative effects of flavonoids have prompted studies to elucidate their mode of action against tumor cells. The anticancer properties of myricetin, a 3',4',5'-tri-hydroxylated flavonol, have been confirmed for a number of neoplasms, but myricitrin, its 3-O-rhamnoside derivative found in fruits and other parts of edible plants, has been scarcely investigated as a chemopreventive agent. This study evaluated the antiproliferative potential of myricitrin obtained from Combretum lanceolatum (Combretaceae) against MCF7 (breast), PC-3 (prostate), HT-29 (colon), 786-0 (kidney), and HL-60 (acute promyelocytic leukemia) cancer cell lines, using the sulforhodamine B and tetrazolium salt assays. Myricitrin proved most effective in inhibiting growth of HL-60 cells (GI50 = 53.4 μmol·L-1), yet showed weak antiproliferative activity against other cell lines. Possible cytotoxic mechanisms involving inhibition of topoisomerases I and IIα by myricitrin were also evaluated, revealing inhibitory activity only against topoisomerase IIα. The results suggested that topoisomerase IIα inhibition is the probable mechanism responsible for the antiproliferative activity of myricitrin. In vivo mutagenicity by myricitrin and its possible antimutagenic effect on doxorubicin-induced DNA damage were also investigated by performing the somatic mutation and recombination test (SMART) on Drosophila melanogaster. Myricitrin proved nonmutagenic to the offspring of standard (ST) and high-bioactivation (HB) crosses, while cotreatments with doxorubicin revealed the antimutagenic properties of myricitrin, even under conditions of high metabolic activation.
