Decision-making in the field of healthcare is a very complex activity. Several tools have been developed to support the decision-making process. DMN, a modeling technique focused on decisions, is among these and has been gaining prominence in both, literature and business, as has the multi-criteria method PROMETHEE II that helps decision-makers with multi-criteria in analyses. Thus, this research targets combining these two techniques and analyzing the decision support that these two tools afford together. The diagnostic stage of stroke patients was used to perform this work. The research demonstrated that this proposal can drive major gains in efficiency and assertiveness in decision-making in time-sensitive hospital processes. After all, there is a noticeable dearth of hospitals with specialized teams as well as a shortfall of adequate infrastructure for this treatment.Though a clinical pathway is one of the tools used to guide evidence-based healthcare, promoting the practice of evidence-based decisions on healthcare services is incredibly challenging in low resource settings (LRS). This paper proposed a novel approach for designing an automated and dynamic generation of clinical pathways (CPs) in LRS through a hybrid (knowledge-based and data-driven based) algorithm that works with limited clinical input and can be updated whenever new information is available. Our proposed approach dynamically maps and validate the knowledge-based clinical pathways with the local context and historical evidence to deliver a multi-criteria decision analysis (concordance table) for adjusting or readjusting the order of knowledge-based CPs decision priority. Our finding shows that the developed approach successfully delivered probabilistic-based CPs and found a promising result with Jimma Health Center "pregnancy, childbearing, and family planning" dataset. As the Electronic Health Record (EHR) data keeps growing in volume at an unprecedented rate, there is an increasing need for a more collaborative and scalable approach for designing and engineering clinical data pipelines. To address these two critical needs, we present a scalable analytics pipeline architecture, designed from the bottom-up to harness the power of FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) for improving collaborative efforts in health data analytics and indicator reporting. The rapid growth of clinical trials launched in recent years poses significant challenges for accurate and efficient trial search. Keyword-based clinical trial search engines require users to construct effective queries, which can be a difficult task given complex information needs. In this study, we present an interactive clinical trial search interface that retrieves trials similar to a target clinical trial. It enables user configuration of 13 clinical trial features and 4 metrics (Jaccard similarity, semantic-based similarity, temporal overlap and geographical distance) to measure pairwise trial similarities. Among 1,007 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) trials conducted in the United States, 91.9% were found to have similar trials with the similarity threshold being 0.85 and 43.8% were highly similar with the threshold 0.95. A simulation study using 3 groups of similar trials curated by COVID-19 clinical trial reviews demonstrates the precision and recall of the search interface. We present an automated knowledge synthesis and discovery framework to analyze published literature to identify and represent underlying mechanistic associations that aggravate chronic conditions due to COVID-19. Our literature-based discovery approach integrates text mining, knowledge graphs and medical ontologies to discover hidden and previously unknown pathophysiologic relations, dispersed across multiple public literature databases, between COVID-19 and chronic disease mechanisms. We applied our approach to discover mechanistic associations between COVID-19 and chronic conditions-i.e. diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease-to understand the long-term impact of COVID-19 on patients with chronic diseases. We found several gene-disease associations that could help identify mechanisms driving poor outcomes for COVID-19 patients with underlying conditions.A Chatbot or Conversational Agent is a computer application that simulates the conversation with a human person (by text or voice), giving automated responses to people's needs. In the healthcare domain, chatbots can be beneficial to help patients, as a complement to care by health personnel, especially in times of high demand or constrained resources such as the COVID-19 Pandemic. In this paper we share the design and implementation of a healthcare chatbot called Tana at the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires. Considering best practices and being aware of possible unintended consequences, we must take advantage of information and communication technologies, such as chatbots, to analyze and promote useful conversations for the health of all people.Electronic healthcare records data promises to improve the efficiency of patient eligibility screening, which is an important factor in the success of clinical trials and observational studies. To bridge the sociotechnical gap in cohort identification by end-users, who are clinicians or researchers unfamiliar with underlying EHR databases, we previously developed a natural language query interface named Criteria2Query (C2Q) that automatically transforms free-text eligibility criteria to executable database queries. In this study, we present a comprehensive evaluation of C2Q to generate more actionable insights to inform the design and evaluation of future natural language user interfaces for clinical databases, towards the realization of Augmented Intelligence (AI) for clinical cohort definition via e-screening.To protect vital health program funds from being paid out on services that are wasteful and inconsistent with medical practices, government healthcare insurance programs need to validate the integrity of claims submitted by providers for reimbursement. However, due the complexity of healthcare billing policies and the lack of coded rules, maintaining "integrity" is a labor-intensive task, often narrow-scope and expensive. We propose an approach that combines deep learning and an ontology to support the extraction of actionable knowledge on benefit rules from regulatory healthcare policy text. We demonstrate its feasibility even in the presence of small ground truth labeled data provided by policy investigators. Leveraging deep learning and rich ontological information enables the system to learn from human corrections and capture better benefit rules from policy text, beyond just using a deterministic approach based on pre-defined textual and semantic pattterns. The amount of available scientific literature is increasing, and studies have proposed various methods for evaluating document-document similarity in order to cluster or classify documents for science mapping and knowledge discovery. In this paper, we propose hybrid methods for bibliographic coupling (BC) and linear evaluation of text or content similarity We combined BC with BM25, Cosine, and PMRA to compare their performances with single methods in paper recommendation tasks using TREC Genomics Track 2005datasets. For paper recommendation, BC and text-based methods complement each other, and hybrid methods were better than single methods. The combinations of BC with BM25 and BC with Cosine performed better than BC with PMRA. The performances were best when the weights of BM25, Cosine, and PMRA were 0.025, 0.2, and 0.2, respectively, in hybrid methods. For paper recommendation, the combinations of BC with text-based methods were better than BC or text-based methods used alone. The choice of method should depend on the actual data and research needs. In the future, the underlying reasons for the differences in performance and the specific part or type of information they complement in text clustering or recommendation need to be examined. With the development of clinical databases and the ubiquity of EHRs, physicians and researchers alike have access to an unprecedented amount of data. Complexity of the available data has also increased since clinical reports are also included and require frameworks with natural language processing capabilities in order to process them and extract information not found in other types of documents. In the following work we implement a data processing pipeline performing phenotyping, disambiguation, negation and subject prediction on such reports. We compare it to an existing solution routinely used in a children's hospital with special focus on genetic diseases. We show that by replacing components based on rules and pattern matching with components leveraging deep learning models and fine-tuned word embeddings we obtain performance improvements of 7%, 10% and 27% in terms of F1 measure for each task. The solution we devised will help build more reliable decision support systems. We present a work-in-progress software project which aims to assist cross-database medical research and knowledge acquisition from heterogeneous sources. Using a Natural Language Processing (NLP) model based on deep learning algorithms, topical similarities are detected, going beyond measures of connectivity via citation or database suggestion algorithms. A network is generated based on the NLP-similarities between them, and then presented within an explorable 3D environment. Our software will then generate a list of publications and datasets which pertain to a certain topic of interest, based on their level of similarity in terms of knowledge representation.Data augmentation is reported as a useful technique to generate a large amount of image datasets from a small image dataset. The aim of this study is to clarify the effect of data augmentation for leukocyte recognition with deep learning. We performed three different data augmentation methods (rotation, scaling, and distortion) as pretreatment on the original images. read more The subjects of clinical assessment were 51 healthy persons. The thin-layer blood smears were prepared from peripheral blood and stained with MG. The effect of data augmentation with rotation was the only significant effective technique in AI model generation for leukocyte recognition. On contrast, the effect of data augmentation with image distortion or image scaling was poor, and accuracy improvement was limited to specific leukocyte categories. Although data augmentation is one effective method for high accuracy in AI training, we consider that a highly effective method should be selected. While the PICO framework is widely used by clinicians for clinical question formulation when querying the medical literature, it does not have the expressiveness to explicitly capture medical findings based on any standard. In addition, findings extracted from the literature are represented as free-text, which is not amenable to computation. This research extends the PICO framework with Observation elements, which capture the observed effect that an Intervention has on an Outcome, forming Intervention-Observation-Outcome triplets. In addition, we present a framework to normalize Observation elements with respect to their significance and the direction of the effect, as well as a rule-based approach to perform the normalization of these attributes. Our method achieves macro-averaged F1 scores of 0.82 and 0.73 for identifying the significance and direction attributes, respectively.
