Temperature extremes are predicted to intensify with climate change. These extremes are rapidly emerging as a powerful driver of species distributional changes with the capacity to disrupt the functioning and provision of services of entire ecosystems, particularly when they challenge ecosystem engineers. The subsequent search for a robust framework to forecast the consequences of these changes mostly ignores within-species variation in thermal sensitivity. Such variation can be intrinsic, but can also reflect species interactions. Intertidal mussels are important ecosystem engineers that host symbiotic endoliths in their shells. These endoliths unexpectedly act as conditionally beneficial parasites that enhance the host's resistance to intense heat stress. To understand how this relationship may be altered under environmental change, we examined the conditions under which it becomes advantageous by reducing body temperature. We deployed biomimetic sensors (robomussels), built using shells of mussels (Mytilusiomimetic models indicate that within-species thermal sensitivity to global warming can be modulated by species interactions, using an intertidal host-symbiont relationship as an example.Silicon (Si) has an important role in mitigating diverse biotic and abiotic stresses in plants, mainly via the silicification of plant tissues. Environmental changes such as atmospheric CO2 concentrations may affect grass Si concentrations which, in turn, can alter herbivore performance. We recently demonstrated that pre-industrial atmospheric CO2 increased Si accumulation in Brachypodium distachyon grass, yet the patterns of Si deposition in leaves and whether this affects insect herbivore performance remains unknown. Moreover, it is unclear whether CO2 -driven changes in Si accumulation are linked to changes in gas exchange (e.g. transpiration rates). We therefore investigated how pre-industrial (reduced; rCO2 , 200 ppm), ambient (aCO2 , 410 ppm) and elevated (eCO2 , 640 ppm) CO2 concentrations, in combination with Si-treatment (Si+ or Si-), affected Si accumulation in B. distachyon and its subsequent effect on the performance of the global insect pest, Helicoverpa armigera. AZD8055 nmr rCO2 increased Si concentrationsherbivores under projected climate change scenarios.

The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the histopathological findings in pleomorphic adenomas (PA) of the parotid and submandibular gland with emphasis on the histological subtype and capsular characteristics.

The histopathological specimens of all patients with PAs of the parotid and submandibular gland between 2000 and 2020 were re-examined by an experienced head and neck pathologist. Patients without representative slides allowing evaluation of the whole periphery of the PA were excluded from our study sample.

Nine hundred and thirty-four patients formed our study sample (327 men, 607 women, male-to-female ratio 0.531). Eight hundred and forty-four cases had a PA in the parotid gland and the remaining 90 in the submandibular gland. Our comparative analysis showed that submandibular PAs are characterized by the consistent presence of an intact anatomical capsule, infrequent occurrence of pseudopodia and satellite nodules, and a low proportion of the high-risk myxoid subtype.

Our study highlights significant differences between PAs of the parotid and submandibular glands in their histopathological characteristics. Their differences likely underlie the favorable surgical outcome observed in PAs of the submandibular glands and may explain the propensity of PAs of the parotid glands for local recurrences.

Approximately one-third of global population is latently infected with the TB pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb). The discovery of anti-TB antibiotics leads to decline in death rate of TB. However, the evolution of antibiotic-resistant M.tb-strain and the resurgence of different immune-compromised diseases re-escalated the death rate of TB. WHO has already cautioned about the chances of pandemic situation in TB endemic countries until the discovery of new anti-tubercular drugs, that is, the need of the hour. Analysing the pathogenesis of TB, it was found that M.tb evades the host by altering the balance of immune response and affects either by killing the cells or by creating inflammation. In the pre-antibiotic era, traditional medicines were only therapeutic measures for different infectious diseases including tuberculosis. The ancient literatures of India or ample Indian traditional knowledge and ethnomedicinal practices are evidence for the treatment of TB using different indigenous plants. However, in the light of modern scientific approach, anti-TB effects of those plants and their bioactive molecules were not established thoroughly. In this review, focus has been given on five bioactive molecules of different traditionally used Indian ethnomedicinal plants for treatment of TB or TB-like symptom. These compounds are also validated with proper identification and their mode of action with modern scientific approaches. The effectiveness of these molecules for sensitive or drug-resistant TB pathogen in clinical or preclinical studies was also evaluated. Thus, our specific aim is to highlight such scientifically validated bioactive compounds having anti-mycobacterial and immunomodulatory activity for future use as medicine or adjunct-therapeutic molecule for TB management.

To identify independent factors for head and neck cancer (HNC) patients with carotid blowout syndrome (CBS) and construct a nomogram to predict risk of CBS preoperatively based on computed tomography angiography (CTA) imaging.

From January 2010 to July 2020, 73 HNC patients who had surgery in hospitalization and underwent CTA examination for head and neck region were included in this study. Vascular alterations and the relationship between carotid artery (CA) and tumor were evaluated in CTA. Clinical and CTA imaging features were distinguished by logistic regression analysis and used to perform receiver operating curve analysis. Nomogram was created to predict risk of CBS and assessed by concordance index (C-index) and calibration curve.

Three independent risk factors were identified, including radical neck dissection, CA surrounded by tumor, and CA invaded by tumor without clear boundary. Area under curve of the combination of 3 variables was 0.836 (95% CI, 0.72-0.952, p<0.001). The C-index of nomogram was 0.
