Although contrast-enhanced urosonography (ceVUS) has shown capable diagnostic accuracy for the diagnosis of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in children, the ability of ceVUS to detect intrarenal reflux (IRR) is considered limited. The purpose of our study is to assess the ability of ceVUS to detect IRR as well as its association with age, gender, and the grade of VUR.

This study included 5153 children who were referred to our clinic for ceVUS. All children underwent sonographic examinations, which were performed on a LOGIQ S8 machine equipped with dedicated software for contrast-enhanced studies with harmonic imaging. Standard ultrasound of the urinary tract was followed by bladder catheterisation and instillation of physiological normal saline and the US contrast medium (SonoVue

, Bracco).

VUR was diagnosed by ceVUS in 1959 out of 5153 children (38%), of whom IRR was found in 233 of 1959 children (11.9%). A total of 285 ureteral units showing IRR were found. High grades of VUR (IV + V) with IRR were found in a total of 235 of 285 (82.81%) renal units. Bilateral IRR was found in 53 patients, usually with a high-grade VUR on both sides. Most children had VUR grade IV, predominantly those < 12months. The younger the child, the higher the likelihood of higher-grade VUR (p = 0.02).

Meningiomas comprise 33% of all CNS tumors. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes meningiomas as benign (BM), atypical (AM), and malignant/anaplastic (MM). High-grade meningiomas such as AMs and MMs are more aggressive, recur more frequently, and portend a worse prognosis than BMs. Currently, the standard treatment for high-grade meningiomas, especially AMs, is ill-defined. In particular, the benefit to survival outcomes of adjuvant radiotherapy post-surgical resection remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effect of adjuvant radiotherapy (ART) post-surgery on survival outcomes compared to surgery alone for high-grade meningiomas.

PRISMA guidelines were a foundation for our literature review. We screened the PubMed database for studies reporting overall survival (OS), progression free survival (PFS), and tumor recurrence for intracranial, primary AM and MMs treated with surgery+ART or surgery alone. Fixed and random effect models compared tumor control rate for AM aforementioned groups.

Mean 5-year PFS was 76.9% for AM (surgery+ART) and 55.9% for AM (surgery alone) patients. Mean 5-year OS was 81.3% and 74% for AM (surgery+ART) and AM (surgery alone) groups, respectively. Overall, the mean 5-year PFS for aggregated high-grade meningiomas AM+MM (surgery+ART) was 67.6%. Fixed effect models revealed tumor control rate as 76% for AM (surgery+ART) and 69% for AM (surgery alone) groups. Roxadustat molecular weight ART induced toxicity incidence ranged from 12.0% to 35.5% for AM and MM patients.

Our analysis suggests that (surgery+ART) may increase PFS, OS, and tumor control rates in high-grade meningiomas. However, further studies involving surgery+ ART should be conducted to fully evaluate the ideal radiosurgical candidate, modality, and dosage.

Ethics committees will increasingly be called upon to approve the sharing of tissue and data with other researchers, often via biobanks, and little guidance currently exists for such committees. In this paper, we provide a structured approach to the ethical review of on-sharing of data and tissue for research purposes.

Pandemics can be associated with anxiety and depression in cancer patients who are undergoing treatment. In the present study, we aimed to perform a comparative evaluation of the conditions of cancer patients before and during the severe acute respiratory distress syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) to detect the impact of the pandemic on treatment delays that are associated with anxiety and depression in cancer patients. In addition, the effect of public transport use on treatment delays was examined.

BDI and BAI were administered to 595 breast, ovarian, colon and gastric cancer patients before and during the pandemic. The questionnaires were administered by the physician blindly, who was unaware of the delay of the patients. The number of days by which the patients delayed their treatment due to the fear of contamination were recorded retrospectively. Correlation analyses were performed between the obtained scores and trpsychiatric and public health experts.Every day our sensory systems perceive and integrate a variety of stimuli containing information vital for our survival. Pain acts as a protective warning system, eliciting a response to remove harmful stimuli; it may also be a symptom of an illness or present as a disease itself. There is a growing need for additional pain-relieving therapies involving the multisensory integration of smell and taste in pain modulation, an approach that may provide new strategies for the treatment and management of pain. While pain, smell, and taste share common features and are strongly linked to emotion and cognition, their interaction has been poorly explored. In this review, we provide an overview of the literature on pain modulation by olfactory and gustatory substances. It includes adult human studies investigating measures of pain threshold, tolerance, intensity, and/or unpleasantness. Due to the limited number of studies currently available, we have structured this review as a narrative in which we comment on experimentally induced and clinical pain separately on pain-smell and pain-taste interaction.
