Neuroimaging studies have reported that the right cerebellar lobule VI is engaged in reading, but its role is unclear. The goal of our study was to identify functionally-dissociable subregions in the right lobule VI and how these subregions contribute to reading in children with normal or impaired reading. In Experiment I, typically developing children performed an orthographic task and a phonological task during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We classified the voxels in the right lobule VI into seven zones based on the patterns of functional connectivity with the cerebrum across both tasks. In Experiment II, we compared the brain activation and cerebro-cerebellar connectivities of each subregion between children readers with different reading levels. We did not find significant group differences in cerebellar activation. However, we found that impaired readers had considerably higher functional connectivity between R1 and the right angular gyrus and the right precuneus compared to the control group in the phonological task. Anosmic toadfish did not experience increases in aggressive behavior, unlike other species previously studied. However, behavior and the pattern of urea excretion were disrupted in anosmic pairs compared to control pairs. Specifically, control subordinate fish had an increase in their dominance index during the 2nd encounter, a response that anosmic subordinate fish did not experience suggesting that without the ability to smell, subordinate fish cannot recognize their opponent and assess their fighting ability and have a reduced chance of winning. These anosmic subordinate fish also had an increase in pulse frequency, perhaps reflecting an increased effort in communication of status. Future research is needed to conclude if peaks in agonistic behavior are coordinated around the time of urea pules. However, the observed changes in behavior and pulsatile urea excretion due to anosmia in the present study provide evidence that toadfish use pulsatile urea excretion to release signals for chemical communication during agonistic encounters.

To evaluate microvascular impairments with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in the eyes of diabetic patients with no diabetic retinopathy (NDR).

The PubMed and Embase databases were comprehensively searched to identify studies comparing the microvascular changes between diabetic eyes without clinical retinopathy and healthy controls using OCTA. Data of interest were extracted and analyzed by Review Manager V.5.3 and Stata V.14.0. The weighted mean differences and their 95% confidence intervals were used to assess the strength of the association.

Forty-five cross-sectional studies involving 2241 diabetic and 1861 healthy eyes were ultimately included. OCTA unambiguously revealed that compared with the healthy control group, the NDR group manifested enlarged areas and increased perimeters of the foveal avascular zone, with decreased perfusion density (PD) in both superficial and deep capillary plexus of the macula (except parafoveal PD of the inner retina and foveal PD) and reduced radial peripapillary capillary PD. In addition, subgroup analyses according to the type of diabetes mellitus indicated that most of those differences became nonsignificant (except parafoveal PD in the deep capillary plexus) in type 1 diabetes mellitus, while in type 2 diabetes mellitus they remained statistically significant.

To quantitate the risk of relapse of ocular and extraocular disease among patients with mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) who had undergone drug-free remission.

Retrospective, comparative, interventional case series.

There were 167 patients with biopsy-proven MMP who were seen at the Wilmer Eye Institute between November 1984 and December 2019. Among the 167 patients, 119 patients had ocular involvement and 103 of those patients received systemic treatment for MMP. The main outcome measures were the incidence of ocular remission, incidence rate of disease relapse after remission, and risk factors for disease relapse.

Over a median follow-up time of 7 years, 74 of 103 treated patients (71.8%) experienced drug-free remission (incidence rate= 0.28/person-year [PY], 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.22-0.35/PY). Most patients (80/103, 77.7%) received cyclophosphamide therapy. Thirteen of the 74 patients (17.6%) had disease relapse after remission 4 with ocular disease only, 4 with extraocular disease only, and 5 with both.
