Phthalates have been largely used for years in varieties of products worldwide. However, research on the joint toxic effect of various phthalates exposure on the liver is lacking.
We aimed to assess exposure to phthalates on liver function tests (LFTs).
This analysis included data on 6046 adults (≥20years old) who participated in a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in 2007-2016. We employed linear regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), to explore the associations of urinary phthalate metabolites with 8 indicators of LFTs.
Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (ΣDEHP) was found to be positively associated with serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (all P
<0.05). We found significant positive associations of ∑DEHP, mono-ethyl phthalate (MEP) and mono-(carboxyisononyl) phthalate (MCNP) with total bilirubin (TBIL) (all P
<0.05). ΣDEHP, mono-n-butyl phthalate (MBP), mono-(3-carboxypropyl) phthalate (MCPP) and mono-benzyl phthalate (MBzP) were negatively associated with serum ALB (all P
<0.05). The BKMR analyses showed a significantly positive overall effect on ALT, AST, ALP and TBIL levels with high concentrations of phthalate metabolites and a significantly negative overall effect on ALB and TP, when all the chemicals at low concentrations.
Our results add novel evidence that exposures to phthalates might be adversely associated with the indicators of LTFs, indicating the potential toxic effect of phthalate exposures on the human liver.

Prenatal exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is associated with increased attention problems in children, however, the effects of such exposure on children's brain structure and function have not been studied. Herein, we probed effects of prenatal ETS on children's cognitive control circuitry and behavior.
Forty-one children (7-9years) recruited from a prospective longitudinal birth cohort of non-smoking mothers completed structural and task-functional magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate effects of maternal ETS exposure, measured by maternal prenatal urinary cotinine. Particularly high concentrations of such by-products can arise in indoor environments when operating open flames without venting. The emission behavior of many combustion sources, including candles, has already been examined in detail. However, to date there are no studies in which the chemical composition of the candles is known exactly or where the candles were specifically manufactured for comparative measurements. In this respect, the study presented here, which was designed in collaboration with candle manufacturers and fragrance houses, demonstrates new insights into the emissions of burning candles depending on their composition. All investigations were carried out under controlled climatic conditions in an 8 m3 stainless steel chamber. The majority of simple renal cysts diagnosed postnatally are asymptomatic and rarely require treatment unless they become symptomatic or complex. We hypothesised that prenatally-detected simple renal cysts would have a similar harmless outcome.
To establish the natural history and postnatal outcome of prenatally-diagnosed simple renal cysts.
Single-centre retrospective case-series review (12-year period).
All patients with prenatally-diagnosed simple renal cysts (defined as a solitary, non-septated, non-communicating cyst in an otherwise normal kidney).
Prenatal and postnatal changes to cyst size, persistence, resolution or modification of diagnosis. Data is presented as the proportion of patients or median (range).
30 cysts were detected (2 bilateral, 26 unilateral) in 28 fetuses (median gestational age of 23 [20-36] weeks). Median maximum diameter was 15 (4-35) mm at initial diagnosis and 17.5 (4-100) mm across all prenatal scans. On follow-up scans diagnosis was modified in 16 (53%) to multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK), dilated duplex kidney, hydronephrosis, urinoma, renal agenesis and adrenal mass.
