The signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (Stat3) is activated upon phosphorylation at Y705 (pStat3) and serves the dual function of signal transduction and transcription activation. Our previous study suggested that pStat3 is functional during oocyte maturation when transcription is silenced. Therefore, we speculated that pStat3 serves other functions. Immunocytochemical analysis revealed that pStat3 emerges at microtubule asters and spindle and is subsequently localized at the spindle poles along with pericentrin during mouse oocyte maturation. Both Stat3 and pStat3 proteins were detected in conditionally knocked out Stat3-/- mouse oocytes. pStat3 localization was the same in Stat3+/+ and Stat3-/-oocytes, and oocyte maturation proceeded normally, suggesting that pStat3 was still functional. Furthermore, the treatment of oocytes with the Stat3-specific inhibitors stattic and BP-1-102 or anti-pStat3 antibody led to significantly abnormal spindle assembly and chromosome mislocation in a dose-dependent manner, and pStat3 was either absent or improperly localized in these oocytes. Moreover, the development of pre-implantation stage embryos derived from inhibitor-treated oocytes was significantly hampered following in vitro fertilization. These findings indicate a novel function of pStat3 in spindle assembly. This current study was conducted to investigate whether bone tissue impairment induced by early life exposure to cadmium (Cd) during postnatal development could result from disruption to zinc (Zn) metabolism. For this reason, the offspring from mothers receiving either tap water, Cd, Zn or Cd + Zn during gestation and lactation periods were euthanized at PND21 and PND70. At the end of the lactation period (PND21), our results showed that exposure to Cd increased Cd accumulation and Zn depletion in the femur. Furthermore, calcium (Ca) level was reduced. At the molecular level, Cd induced an increase of MT-1 expression and caused an upregulation of ZIP2 accompanied with a down-regulation of ZnT5. Runx2, ALP, colα-1 and Oc mRNA levels were also decreased. In plasma, IGF-1 and osteocalcin concentrations were decreased. Further, Cd altered femoral growth by generating changes in the growth plate. Consequently, the toxic effect of Cd persisted at adult age (PND70) by decreasing bone volume (%BV/TV), bone mineral density (BMD) and Ca content and by increasing trabecular separation (Tb.Sp) in the distal femur. Interestingly, Zn supply provided total or partial corrections of several toxic effects of Cd. These data suggest that the increases of Zn bioavailability as well as the reduction of Cd accumulation in the femur following the changes in ZIP2 and ZnT5 expression are part of the mechanism involved in Zn protection against Cd toxicity on bone tissue.Respiratory infections pose a significant threat to the success of solid organ transplantation, and the diagnosis and management of these infections are challenging. The current narrative review addressed some of these challenges, based on evidence from the literature published in the last 20 years. Specifically, we focused our attention on (i) the obstacles to an etiologic diagnosis of respiratory infections among solid organ transplant recipients, (ii) the management of bacterial respiratory infections in an era characterized by increased antimicrobial resistance, and (iii) the development of antimicrobial stewardship programs dedicated to solid organ transplant recipients.A series of Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives (PSAs) with different soft monomer compositions were prepared by using emulsion polymerization. The monomers used were acrylic acid (AA), n-butyl acrylate (n-BA) and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA). Maintaining the same acrylic acid fraction in all polymerizations, the n-BA/2-EHA weight ratio varied from 0 to 1. These polymers were characterized by using Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and the Glass Transition Temperature (Tg) was determined both theoretically from the Fox equation and experimentally by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The tetrahydrofuran (THF) insoluble polymer fraction was used to calculate the gel content, and the soluble part was used to determine the average molecular weight by means of Gas Permeation Chromatography (GPC). The adhesive performance was assessed by measuring tack, peel and shear resistance. The results showed that with the 2-EHA rate, the elastic modulus slightly decreased and the shear yield strength slightly increased. Consequently, the loop tack and peel resistances decreased. This behavior was attributed to the increase of the gel content with the ratio of comonomers studied. The adhesives were tested in paper labels on glass bottles immersed in a cold-water bath, the so-called ice bucket test, and all of them showed that they could withstand wet and cold environment conditions.Flavonoids are polyphenolic compounds subdivided into 6 groups isoflavonoids, flavanones, flavanols, flavonols, flavones and anthocyanidins found in a variety of plants. Fruits, vegetables, plant-derived beverages such as green tea, wine and cocoa-based products are the main dietary sources of flavonoids. read more Flavonoids have been shown to possess a wide variety of anticancer effects they modulate reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging enzyme activities, participate in arresting the cell cycle, induce apoptosis, autophagy, and suppress cancer cell proliferation and invasiveness. Flavonoids have dual action regarding ROS homeostasis-they act as antioxidants under normal conditions and are potent pro-oxidants in cancer cells triggering the apoptotic pathways and downregulating pro-inflammatory signaling pathways. This article reviews the biochemical properties and bioavailability of flavonoids, their anticancer activity and its mechanisms of action. This paper presents the electromagnetic interference properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as a novel nano-reinforcement filler in poly (lactic acid) (PLA)/poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) polymer matrix that was prepared via melt blending mode. Plasticization of PLA was first carried out by PEG, which overcomes its brittleness problem, in order to enhance its flexibility. A waveguide adapter technique was used to measure the dielectric properties εr, and S-parameters reflection (S11) and transmission (S21) coefficients. The dielectric properties, microwave attenuation performances, and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMISE) for all the material under test have been calculated over the full X-Band (8-12 GHz) due to its importance for military and commercial applications. The prepared samples were studied while using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), mechanical properties measurements, as well as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).
