death. The sino-nasal function was measured with the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22 and visual analog scale for olfaction preoperatively and postoperatively, and there was no statistically significant difference. The EEA is an effective approach to resect pituitary adenomas, the gross total resection and near-total resection rate and endocrinological remission rate are satisfactory. The EEA is a safe approach, as the complication rate is acceptable compared with those reported in the previous series of microscopic and endoscopic approaches. These results can be achieved with minimal nasal injury.

Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) is an alternative to whole breast irradiation in selected early-stage breast cancer patients. In this single institute analysis, we report the preliminary results of IORT given by Axxent Electronic Brachytherapy (eBT) system.Patients treated with lumpectomy and eBT within a minimum follow-up period of 12 months were analyzed. Eligible criteria include being over the age of 45, having unifocal invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) or ductal carcinoma in situ <3 cm in diameter, not exhibiting lymph node involvement on preoperative images, and negative sentinel lymph node biopsy. The eBT was given by preloaded radiation plans to deliver a single fraction of 20 Gray (Gy) right after lumpectomy. From January 2016 to April 2019, a total of 103 patients were collected. There were 78 patients with IDC and 25 with ductal carcinoma in situ. At a mean follow-up time of 31.1 months (range, 14.5-54.0 months), the local control rate was 98.1%. Two IDC patients had tumor recurrences (1 negative sentinel lymph node biopsy. Two IDC patients had tumor recurrences (1 local and 1 regional failure). Post-IORT radiotherapy was given to 4 patients. There were no cancer related deaths, no distant metastases, and treatment side effects greater than grade 3 documented. We report the largest single institute analysis using the eBT system in Taiwan. The low recurrence and complication rates at a 31.1 month follow-up time support the use of the eBT system in selected early-stage breast cancer patients.

In the past few decades, many lines of evidence implicate the importance of liver kinase B1 (LKB1) as a tumor suppressor gene in the development and progression of solid tumours. However, the prognostic and clinicopathological value of LKB1 in patients with lung cancer are controversial. This article aimed to investigate the latest evidence on this question.

A systematic literature searched in the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane library, Scopus until September 20, 2020. The association between overall survival (OS), relapse-free survival (RFS), progression-free survival (PFS), clinicopathological features and LKB1 were analysed by meta-analysis.

Eleven studies including 1507 patients were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled results revealed that low LKB1 expression was significantly associated with poor overall survival (OS) (HR = 1.67, 95% CI 1.07-2.60, P = .024) in lung cancer. However, no association was found between LKB1 expression and DFS/PFS (HR = 1.29, 95% CI 0.70-2.39, P = .410). Pooled results showed that low LKB1 expression was associated with histological differentiation (poor vs moderate or well, OR = 4.135, 95% CI2.524-6.774, P < .001), nodal metastasis (absent vs present, OR = 0.503, 95% CI 0.303-0.835, P = .008) and smoking (yes vs no, OR = 1.765, 95% CI 1.120-2.782, P = .014).

These results suggest that low expression of LKB1 can be considered as a unfavorable prognostic biomarker for human lung cancer, which should be further researched.

The relationship between Helicobacter pylori (H. Bemcentinib pylori) infection and subclinical atherosclerosis has been confirmed, but these conclusions are still controversial. Therefore, we have performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the association between H. pylori infection and subclinical atherosclerosis.

Databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science were searched for the articles on the association of carotid intima-media thickness or pulse wave velocity with H. pylori infection published up to January 1, 2020. Stata 12.0 was used to calculate standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI); the I2 test was used to evaluate heterogeneity between studies and sensitivity analysis and subgroup analysis were used to explore the source of heterogeneity. Funnel plot, Begg test, and Egger test were used to estimate publication bias.

Data were extracted from 18 studies involving 6776 subjects with H. link2 pylori positive and 7794 with H. pylori negative. H. pylori positive the prevention and control of cardiovascular events.

Identification of advanced fibrosis/cirrhosis in hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected patients should be a mainstay before starting treatment; however, the limited access of many centres to transient elastography (TE) is often a barrier for early assessments. link3 We aimed to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of serum indexes for predicting liver stiffness.Retrospective analysis of HCV patients (with or without HIV coinfection) routinely assessed in 7 centres in Spain. The diagnostic accuracy of aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index (APRI), fibrosis-4 (FIB-4), and their combinations was evaluated using a recent TE examination as a reference test (liver stiffness ≥ 9.5 kPa and ≥12.5 kPa for advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis, respectively). In addition to area under the receiving operating characteristic curves, sensitivity, specificity, and negative predictive value (NPV) and positive predictive value were estimated. The analysis included 1391 patients 346 (25%) HIV-positive, 732 (53%) people who inject donfidently allowed identifying the absence of cirrhosis and the presence of advanced fibrosis in 53% of a heterogeneous series of real-world HCV patients with or without HIV infection.

Very elderly people (over 80 years) with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) indications often have a higher prevalence of aging comorbidity, among which cognitive impairment is not uncommon. This study aimed to investigate periprocedural complications of CIED implantation among very elderly patients with and without cognitive impairment. One hundred eighty patients ≥80 years of age indicated for CIED implantation were included in our study. During hospitalization, the cognitive evaluation was performed according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (fifth edition). According to the cognitive test results, patients were divided into 2 groups (90 patients with normal cognitive function and 90 patients with cognitive impairment). Meanwhile, their physical parameters and laboratory measurements were completed. The procedural data and periprocedural complications were collected from both groups. The association between cognitive impairment and periprocedural complications was mplications in very elderly patients. Cognitive impairment is associated with increased periprocedural complications of CIED implantation in very elderly patients.

This study investigates the association of 5 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in selected genes (ABO, VEGFA, BDKRB2, NOS3, and ADRB2) with blood pressure (BP) response to enalapril. The study further assessed genetic interactions that exist within these genes and their implications in enalapril treatment response among South African adults with hypertension.A total of 284 participants belonging to the Nguni tribe of South Africa on continuous treatment for hypertension were recruited. Five SNPs in enalapril pharmacogenes were selected and genotyped using MassArray. Uncontrolled hypertension was defined as BP ≥140/90 mm Hg. The association between genotypes, alleles, and BP response to treatment was determined by fitting multivariate logistic regression model analysis, and genetic interactions between SNPs were assessed by multifactor dimensionality reduction.Majority of the study participants were female (75.00%), Xhosa (78.87%), and had uncontrolled hypertension (69.37%). All 5 SNPs were exclusively sion.

We aimed to compare the association of depression with aspects of quality of life (QoL) among older people users of primary health care (PHC) living in Brazil and Portugal. We carried out an observational, cross-sectional and comparative study with a quantitative approach in the PHC scope in Brazil and Portugal, where we obtained a nonrandom sample of 150 participants aged 65 years or older (100 Brazilians and 50 Portuguese). We used the socioeconomic and health data questionnaire, the Medical Outcomes Short-Form Health Survey QoL (SF-36) questionnaire and the Beck Inventory.Among the socioeconomic profiles, most were females aged between 65 and 80 years in both countries. There was a significant difference between groups in the income variable, with 100.0% of Portuguese people earning up to 1 minimum wage (P value <.001), and the presence of chronic diseases in 92.0% of respondents in Portugal (P value = .033). In the association analysis, most aspects of QoL had a higher median score (>50.0) within tpared to Brazil. However, similar results were obtained in Brazil but with less relevance.

0.400) in Portugal. Greater associations of depression on QoL were revealed in Portugal than in Brazil. Among their most expressive associations, the Physical role functioning (odds ratio [OR] = 4.776; 95.0% confidence interval [CI] 2.41-9.43), Physical functioning (OR = 3.037; 95.0% CI 3.037), Vitality (OR = 6.000; 95.0% CI 1.56-23.07) and Total score (OR = 3.727; 95.0% CI 2.24-6.17) domains and the Mental health summary measure (OR = 3.870; 95.0% CI 2.13-7.02) stood out.Aspects related to the emotional, physical, functional and mental health components stood out. The association and correlation with depression were more expressive in Portugal compared to Brazil. However, similar results were obtained in Brazil but with less relevance.

Early and appropriate antenatal care (ANC) is key for the effectiveness of prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We evaluated the importance of ANC visits and related service costs for women receiving option B+ to prevent mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV in Tanzania.A cost analysis from a health care sector perspective was conducted using routine data of 2224 pregnant women newly diagnosed with HIV who gave birth between August 2014 and May 2016 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. We evaluated risk of infant HIV infection at 12 weeks postnatally in relation to ANC visits (<4 vs ≥4 visits). Costs for service utilisation were estimated through empirical observations and the World Health Organisation Global Price Reporting Mechanism.Mean gestational age at first ANC visit was 22 (±7) weeks. The average number of ANC/prevention of MTCT visits among the 2224 pregnant women in our sample was 3.6 (95% confidence interval [CI] 3.6-3.7), and 57.3% made ≥4 visits.
