This novel clinically relevant model provides a valuable platform for investigating the mechanisms of human GVL and development of effective leukemia treatments.Periodontitis induced by bacteria especially Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) is the most prevalent microbial disease worldwide and is a significant risk factor for systemic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). RA and periodontitis share similar clinical and pathologic features. Moreover, the prevalence of RA is much higher in patients with periodontitis than in those without periodontitis. To explore the immunologic mechanism of periodontitis involved in RA, we established a mouse model of periodontitis and then induced RA. According to the results of paw thickness, arthritis clinical score, arthritis incidence, microscopic lesion using H&E staining, and micro-CT analysis, periodontitis induced by P. gingivalis promoted the occurrence and development of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in mice. Furthermore, periodontitis enhanced the frequency of CD19+ B cells, Th17, Treg, gMDSCs, and mMDSCs, whereas down-regulated IL-10 producing regulatory B cells (B10) in CIA mice preinduced for periodontitis with P. gingivalis. In vitro stimulation with splenic cells revealed that P. gingivalis directly enhanced differentiation of Th17, Treg, and mMDSCs but inhibited the process of B cell differentiation into B10 cells. Considering that adoptive transfer of B10 cells prevent RA development, our study, although preliminary, suggests that down-regulation of B10 cells may be the key mechanism that periodontitis promotes RA as the other main immune suppressive cells such as Treg and MDSCs are up-regulated other than down-regulated in group of P. gingivalis plus CIA.

The human tongue is important in the oral processing of food and in sensory perception. Tongue topography could influence delicate differences in sensory perception. It is hypothesized that tongue surface roughness could alter oral lubrication status and affect perception of smoothness. Fifteen participants with varying levels of tongue surface roughness were recruited and tested. Participants' in situ oral lubrication status without and after consumption of fluid food (milk with varying fat content and maltodextrin solutions with different shear viscosities) was measured. Participants' smoothness sensory scores were also recorded.

The in situ friction coefficient (0.299-1.505) was significantly positively correlated with tongue-surface roughness (54.6-140.0μm) in all types of test fluid samples across participants. Oral lubrication was significantly decreased when participants consumed the test fluid samples compared with no liquid food consumption, for all test fluid sample types (P < 0.05). However, the minimal discriminatory power of widely implemented control region mitochondrial sequencing techniques limits its utility in some forensic casework. In this research, multiple variables were tested to provide information on rootless hair shaft sample genotyping success. Results showed external decontamination procedures decreased drop-in alleles but also greatly reduced profile recovery. The novel InnoXtract™ chemistry was comparable to automated EZ1 DNA Investigator extraction. To evaluate the persistence of these coatings, we investigate effects of outdoor weathering and laundering on detection and classification of the fluorinated oil-and-water-repellent coatings on 9 garments and 2 spray-coated fabric samples. Single fibers from the samples are pyrolyzed and subjected to gas chromatography coupled to a fluorine-selective detector. The positive detection of coatings is indicated by a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) >50 for the tallest peak in the pyrograms. Moreover, a multinomial logistic regression model trained using fibers prior to weathering and laundering is utilized to determine the class of the weathered and laundered fibers, providing a metric to evaluate the effect of these processes on fiber classification. Notably, fluorinated coatings are detected on all of the fibers exposed to outdoor elements in Arlington, VA, up to 12 weeks from August to October 2020, while a detection rate of 95.
