Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have a higher risk of osteoporosis. Few studies have addressed the prescription patterns in osteoporosis patients with COPD. The purpose of this study was to conduct a retrospective study of the prescription patterns in patients with COPD and osteoporosis in Taiwan.

The study was conducted with data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database from January 1, 2003, to December 31, 2016. We selected the COPD population in Taiwan older than 40 years with at least one prescription for a bronchodilator. We excluded patients who had osteoporosis, fracture, asthma, or cancer before the diagnosis of COPD. After the diagnosis of COPD, patients who did not have osteoporosis were also excluded. We followed this COPD and osteoporosis cohort until they had been prescribed medication for osteoporosis.

Lung cancer is a serious complication in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and accounts for approximately 15% of deaths in patients with COPD. However, with the exception of emphysema, few reports to date have been published on the factors that predict lung cancer development in COPD patients. It has been reported that patients with COPD develop lung cancer at a rate of 0.8% - 1.7%/year, but the incidence may be higher in the Japanese population. Therefore, we investigated the incidence of lung cancer and the lung cancer mortality rate in Japanese COPD patients, as well as factors that are associated with the development of lung cancer in COPD patients.

We followed up 224 patients with stable COPD and performed CT examinations at least once per year. The incidence of lung cancer was recorded and data at enrollment were compared with data of the group that did not develop lung cancer.

Over a median follow-up period of 4.58 years, lung cancer was newly diagnosed in 19 patients; the incidence of lung cancer in this population was 1.85%/year. Home noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) can be considered not only as an evidence-based treatment for stable hypercapnic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients, but also as a predictor for detecting severe acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD).

In this retrospective observational study, we collected clinical exacerbations information and daily NPPV-related data in a cohort of COPD patients with home NPPV for 6 months. Daily changes in NPPV-related parameters' variability prior to AECOPD were examined using two-way repeated measures ANOVA and individual abnormal values (>75th or <25th percentile of individual baseline parameters) were calculated during 7-day pre-AECOPD period. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify the independent risk factors associated with AECOPD that then were incorporated into the nomogram.

Frailty is a major challenge for healthcare systems in ageing societies. This dynamic state of health is a reflection of reduced reserve in various organ systems and enhanced vulnerability to stressors. Research in this area of geriatrics and gerontology is limited in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like India. This study is directed at development of a culturally appropriate and validated assessment scale for frailty among older Indians.

After extensive review of the literature on existing scales, a preliminary draft scale was formed. This draft was pre- and pilot-tested to check feasibility and modified accordingly. The final scale was validated on 107 older adults by confirmatory factor analysis and was named the Frailty Assessment and Screening Tool (FAST). The Fried's frailty phenotype was also administered on the same 107 older adults and scores of both were co-related. Suitable cut-off scores were found for frail and pre-frail older adults.

The final version of the FAST consisted of 14 questions pertaining to 10 domains. It has good reliability. Cronbach's alpha co-efficient was 0.99; test-retest reliability was 0.97 and validity by confirmatory factor analysis was adequate. The Kaiser-CMeyer-Olkin (KMO) of sampling adequacy was 0.699, and Bartlett's test of sphericity was significant (



= 353.471, p < 0.001). FAST scores had a cut-off of ≥ 7/14 for frail and ≥ 5/14 for pre-frail elderly.

Sirtuin 1 is involved in the pathogenesis of age-related diseases.

The aim of the study was to assess the clinical and diagnostic value of serum sirtuin 1 concentration in patients with CKD.

The serum sirtuin 1 level was evaluated using ELISA kit in 100 CKD patients stratified for five stages and in a control group of 24 healthy volunteers.

Serum sirtuin 1 concentration was higher in the CKD group compared with the control group (p<0.05). Sirtuin 1 correlated with conventional CKD biomarkers and eGFR equations, intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) and age (all p<0.05). GSK2656157 Statins, AT

Further studies are needed to explore the interplay between sirtuin 1, PTH and CKD-related vascular calcification as well as to assess its prognostic value in observational studies.

Hepatic steatosis has been associated with some cardiovascular risks. Increased alanine aminotransferase (ALT) was suggested to be linked to endothelial dysfunction. We prospectively investigated the joint effect of hepatic steatosis and elevated ALT within the normal range on incident ischemic heart disease (IHD) risk as an extrahepatic complication.

We assessed 16,541 participants without diabetes using data from a health risk assessment study (HERAS) and Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment (HIRA) data. We defined elevated ALT within the normal range as 30-40 IU/L in men and 23-40 IU/L in women, according to previous Korean epidemiological data. We prospectively assessed hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for IHD using multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models over a 50-month period after the baseline survey.

During the follow-up period, 368 (2.2%) participants developed IHD. Compared to the group with no hepatic steatosis and controlled ALT, the HRs for IHD were 1.68 (95% CI, 1.16-2.42) in the group with hepatic steatosis and elevated ALT after adjusting for confounding variables.

This indicates that lifestyle advice and vascular health management should be recommended among individuals with hepatic steatosis and elevated ALT, even if it falls within the normal range.

Pneumonia is a common complication in patients with stroke. There was a close relationship between serum iron and inflammatory response. This study aimed to explore the relationship between serum iron levels and stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP).

Patients with acute stroke were recruited from the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University and divided into SAP group and Non-SAP group. The demographic and clinical data of the patients were collected via the medical records, and the blood samples were collected within 24 hours after admission. The predictive value of serum iron to SAP was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) and binary Logistic regression models.
