In this study we measured neural activation (EMG) in four trunk stabilizer muscles and vastus lateralis (VL) in trained and novice participants during a set of squat repetitions to volitional fatigue at 85% 1RM.

Forty males were recruited into two groups, novice (NG n = 21) and experienced (EG n = 19), according to relative squat 1RM. Participants were tested twice to (1) determine squat 1RM, and (2) complete a single set of repetitions to volitional fatigue at 85% 1RM. Relative squat 1RM; NG < 140% body mass, EG > 160% body mass. Neuromuscular activation was measured by EMG forthe following rectus abdominus (RA), external oblique (EO), lumbar sacral erector spinae (LSES), upper lumbar erector spinae (ULES) and VL in eccentric and concentric phase. Completed repetitions, RPE and EMG in repetition 1 and at 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% of completed repetitions were analysed.

No group differences were found between number repetitions completed and RPE in repetitions to volitional fatigue at 85% 1RM. Neuromuscular activation increased significantly in all muscle groups in eccentric and concentric phase apart from RA in the eccentric phase. Trunk neuromuscular activation was higher in NG compared to EG and this was significant in EO, LSES and ULES in eccentric phase and LSES in the concentric phase. VL activation increased in both phases with no group differences.

We have a weak understanding of how aerobic training may influence migraine, and the optimal parameters for exercise regimens as migraine therapy are not clear. The objectives of this study were to assess, first, effects of two different intensities of aerobic exercise on migraine headache indices; second, serum neuro-biomarker in women migraineurs.

A total of 45 non-athlete female migraine patients were selected by a neurologist and randomly divided into three groups control (CON), moderate-intensity aerobic training (MOD T), and high-intensity aerobic training (HIGH T). Moderate-intensity aerobic training (MOD T) reduced headache intensity, frequency, and duration in women with migraine (p < 0.001, for all). Also, high-intensity aerobic training (HIGH T) reduced headache intensity, frequency, and duration (p < 0.001, for all). However, for headache intensity and duration, MOD T was effective rather than HIGH T (p < 0.001; p ≤ 0.05, respectively). In addition, neither MOD T nor HIGH T could not alter PACAP and SP contents (p = 0.712; p = 0.249, respectively).

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the most frequent and severe neurological diseases. In the last few decades, significant advances have been made in TBI pathophysiology and monitoring, however new treatments have not emerged. Although the central nervous system (CNS) has been historically defined as an immunologically privileged organ, recent studies show the increasingly predominant role of inflammatory and apoptotic phenomena in the pathogenesis of TBI. Inflammatory response mediators can be eliminated with continuous renal replacement therapies (CRRT). Our aim was to investigate whether hemofiltration protects the brain after head trauma in an experimental study in animals.

A model of TBI and CVVH was performed in anesthetized New Zealand white rabbits without acute renal failure. PF-573228 nmr The experimental group TBI ( +)-CVVH ( +) was compared with a TBI ( +)-CVVH (-) and a TBI (-)-CVVH ( +) control groups. Rabbits were assessed immediately (NES1) and 24h hours after (NES2) TBI and/or CVVH using a functional Neurological Evaluation Score (NES) and histology of the brains after sacrifice. There was evidence to support a difference of NES1 comparing with the TBI (-)-CVVH ( +), but not with TBI ( +)-CVVH (-) with only 15% of the rabbits treated with CVVH and TBI showing a favorable neurological course. The final neurological outcome (mortality at 24h) was 0%, 22% and 53% in the TBI(-) + CVVH( +), TBI( +)-CVVH(-) and TBI( +)-CVVH( +) groups respectively. The use of hemofiltration before or after TBI did not make a difference in regards the outcome of the rabbits. There was evidence in the histology to support an increase of mild ischemia, hemorrhage and edema in the experimental group compared with the other two groups.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an established risk factor for ischemic stroke in a general population. However, its impact in patients on hemodialysis (HD), a group with a high risk for stroke, is still controversial. link2 Here we examined this issue in a Japanese cohort.

This study was designed as a multicenter cohort study. HD patients (n = 1,067) were enrolled from 22 institutes in January 2009 and followed up for 3years. Patients with missing data (n = 196) or kidney transplantation (n = 4) were excluded, and 867 patients contributed to the analysis of the risk of new-onset of ischemic stroke.

At baseline, AF was observed in 123 patients (14.2%, AF group) and not in the others (n = 744 85.8%, non-AF group). During a follow-up period of 31.3months, the cumulative incidence rate for ischemic stroke was significantly higher in the AF group than in the non-AF group (6.5% vs. link3 2.9%, p < 0.05). In Cox regression analysis, AF was a significant independent risk factor for new-onset of ischemic stroke after adjustment for age, sex, prior history of ischemic stroke, use of warfarin, dialysis vintage, comorbidity of diabetic nephropathy, and interdialytic weight gain (hazard ratio 2.17-2.68).

In patients with COVID-19, elevated high sensitive troponin (hs-TnI) levels are frequent independent from the underlying cardiovascular disease. However, the relationship between high troponin levels and LVGLS in such patients remains unknown. We aimed to investigate the relation between troponin levels and LVGLS values in patients with COVID-19. A total of thirty-eight patients diagnosed with COVID-19 pneumonia who underwent echocardiography examination within the first week of hospital admission were enrolled in our study. Patients were divided into two groups according to their hs-TnI levels. Conventional left venticular (LV) function parameters, including ejection fraction, LV diastolic and systolic volumes were obtained and LVGLS was determined using 2D-STE. Frequency of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and current smoking were similar among groups. Compared with the patients in the negative troponin group, those in the positive troponin group were more likely to have a higher age; higher levels of D-dimer, C-reactive protein and ferritin; higher need for high-flow oxygen, invasive mechanical ventilation therapy or both; and a higher number of intensive care unit admissions. There was no statistically significant difference in LVGLS and ejection fraction values between the two groups.(- 18.5 ± 2.9, - 19.8 ± 2.8, p = 0.19; 55.2 ± 9.9, 59.5 ± 5.9, p = 0.11 respectively). Co-encapsulated nano preparations have been gradually developed in recent years. In this work, cytarabine (Ara-C)/daunorubicin (DNR) liposomes were prepared by the pH gradient (ADL-pH) and Cu2+ gradient (ADL-Cu) methods. Ara-C did not show significant release from either ADL-Cu or ADL-pH in vitro during 168 h, which related to its logPoct. Different drug-loading patterns showed different release characteristics of DNR due to the different existence forms, ADL-pH contains the citrate form, while in ADL-Cu, there is the Cu2+ complex. To evaluate the release behavior, daunorubicin liposome (DL) and daunorubicin-Cu2+ complex (DNR-Cu) were prepared. The addition of EDTA in the release medium significantly increased the release rate of DNR from DL-Cu, while lower pH accelerated DNR release from both DL-pH and DL-Cu. The PK confirmed that ADL-Cu and ADL-pH could prolong the drug circulation time, and ADL-Cu had a mean retention time 1.5 times that of ADL-pH. Furthermore, both liposomes allowed the two drugs to maintain a relatively constant plasma concentration ratio for a prolonged time. Cytotoxicity assays showed that Ara-C/DNR with a molar ratio of 51 and 31 exhibited an excellent synergistic effect, which was more obvious at 51. In vitro antitumor results revealed that ADL-Cu exhibited more cytotoxicity than ADL-pH. All factors tested in this work suggest the considerable potential of ADL-Cu and ADL-pH for anticancer treatment.

While the results of previous meta-analyses have shown beneficial effects of corticosteroid therapy on post-extubation stridor and extubation failure in adults, these results might not be generalizable to children because of the differences in anatomy and structure. We aimed to determine the benefits of corticosteroids on those outcomes in pediatric populations.

We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and reference lists of articles from inception until February 2019. Randomized controlled trials and observational studies on the efficacy of systemic corticosteroid administration given prior to elective extubation in mechanically ventilated pediatrics were eligible. Outcomes included post-extubation stridor indicating laryngeal edema and extubation failures.
