Today, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, people are staying home for longer periods of times, thus being exposed to a poor indoor air quality. Due to elevated numerical concentration and large surface area, the health effect of sub-10 nm particles can go beyond what expected from their low mass concentration in the atmosphere. The objective of this study is to find, based on analysis of recent in vitro studies, a dose-effect correlation based on particle size/surface more than on particle mass. Such a correlation cold be useful to assess the health effects of people exposed to very low mass doses of nanoparticles either indoor or outdoor.

In the last years nanotechnologies and nanoproducts are constantly growing up thanks to their promising benefits for social and economic development. Nanomaterials are increasingly used in our daily life, finding application in many sectors such as textile, automotive, electronic, food, etc. In 2012, the European Commission included nanotechnologies among the Key Enabling Technologies (KETs), which provide the basis for innovation in the present century. In parallel to the growing interest at industrial and production level (estimated at about 11 million of tons per year) the number of workers potentially exposed in all nanomaterials life cycle has increased. Concurrently, concerns about the potential effects on human health arose, attracting the attention by the scientific community, in particular on health and safety issues in workplaces. In Italy the industrial market has evolved in the same direction with important economic investments both public and private. Concurrently, concerns about the potential effects on human health arose, attracting the attention by the scientific community, in particular on health and safety issues in workplaces. In Italy the industrial market has evolved in the same direction with important economic investments both public and private. Consequently, numerous research groups belonging to the University, Institutions and Research Centers were involved in the study of the main issues to promote a responsible development of nanomaterials. In this framework, the main aim of this study is to highlight the commitment of Italian research in the field of health and safety of engineered nanomaterials, through the initiatives of Italian Workers Compensation Authority (INAIL) for sustainable development of nanotechnologies.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection induces an alteration in the endomembrane system of the mammalian cells. In this study, we used transmission electron microscopy and electron tomography to investigate the main structural alterations in the cytoplasm of Vero cells infected with a SARS-CoV-2 isolate from São Paulo state (Brazil).

Different membranous structures derived from the zippered endoplasmic reticulum were observed along with virus assembly through membrane budding. Also, we demonstrated the occurrence of annulate lamellae in the cytoplasm of infected cells and the presence of virus particles in the perinuclear space.

This study contributes to a better understanding of the cell biology of SARS-CoV-2 and the mechanisms of the interaction of the virus with the host cell that promote morphological changes, recruitment of organelles and cell components, in a context of a virus-induced membrane remodelling.

Thus, while AggI aggregate is obtained when a DCM solution of (S)-1 is diluted with MCH at room temperature, AggII aggregate is generated only after a slow heating (353 K)/cooling (273 K) process. Interestingly, during AggI formation (mechanism 1), short P chain oligomers are produced, which have a great tendency to aggregate in plane, yielding brick-like nanostructures that halt the aggregation process. On the other hand, after a heating/cooling cycle, long M type columnar helical aggregates (AggII ) are obtained, formed by individual supramolecular polymer chains (mechanism 2) easily visualized by AFM. The two different P/M orientations obtained for AggI and AggII reveal the dynamic character of the system and its ability to create diastereomeric helical structures under the right conditions. Different experimental protocols were explored to prepare long M type columnar helical aggregates, which are not obtained by using the previous MCH/DCM 99/1 (v/v) solvent mixture. The generation of the desired M oriented supramolecular polymer is achieved when toluene is added to the solvent mixture in a 97/2/1 MCH/Tol/DCM (v/v/v) ratio. This study aimes to investigate the effect of constant and fluctuating temperatures on starting times of developmental periods of insect species. For this purpose, Sarcophaga (Liopygia) argyrostoma (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830), a forensically important species has been chosen. Whether the constant (25°C) and fluctuating (25.2°C averaged over natural conditions) temperatures would make a difference on the timing of intrapuparial development of this species was investigated. Smoothened Agonist First larval instars were placed in rearing cages until they reached post-feeding third larval instar, which is considered the beginning of intrapuparial development. Relevant morphological changes were observed by hourly dissections. At fluctuating temperature treatment, the post-feeding third instar larvae were transferred to containers under natural, open-air conditions. Minimum and maximum starting times of 23 intrapuparial development periods were determined for both treatments. These times, medians, and standard deviations were compared by Mann-Whitney U tests.
