Valorization of lignin is still an open question and lignin has therefore remained an underutilized biomaterial. This situation is even more pronounced for hydrolysis lignin, which is characterized by a highly condensed and excessively cross-linked structure. We demonstrate the synthesis of photoactive lignin/Bi4O5Br2/BiOBr bio-inorganic composites consisting of a lignin substrate that is coated by semiconducting nanosheets. The XPS analysis reveals that growing these nanosheets on lignin instead on cellulose prevents the formation of Bi5+ ions at the surface region, yielding thus a modified heterojunction Bi4O5Br2/BiOBr. The material contains 18.9% of Bi4O5Br2/BiOBr and is effective for the photocatalytic degradation of cationic methylene blue (MB) and zwitterionic rhodamine B (RhB) dyes under light irradiation. Lignin/Bi4O5Br2/BiOBr decreases the dye concentration from 80 mg L-1 to 12.3 mg L-1 for RhB (85%) and from 80 mg L-1 to 4.4 mg L-1 for MB (95%). Complementary to the dye degradation, the lignin as a main component of the composite, was found to be efficient and rapid biosorbent for nickel, lead, and cobalt ions. The low cost, stability and ability to simultaneously photo-oxidize organic dyes and adsorb metal ions, make the photoactive lignin/Bi4O5Br2/BiOBr composite a prospective material for textile wastewaters remediation and metal ions recycling. This study aimed to assess the role of Solanum lycopersicum and plant growth promoting rhizobacterial (PGPR) strains to remove endosulfan present in the soil. Elamipretide chemical structure S. lycopersicum was grown in endosulfan amended soil (5, 10, 25, and 50 mg kg-1) inoculated with PGPR strains for 40, 80, and 120 days. The influence of PGPR inoculation on endosulfan accumulation in plant tissues, endosulfan degradation in soil, and plant growth parameters were evaluated. The oxidative stress tolerance was assessed by determining the malondialdehyde formation in S. lycopersicum planted in endosulfan stressed soil inoculated with PGPR strains. The results showed that uptake of endosulfan followed root > shoot pathway in association with a reduction in endosulfan accumulation in inoculated plants as related to un-inoculated plants. Moreover, inoculation of PGPR strains showed a beneficial influence on the degradation of endosulfan, Bacillus sp. PRB101 showed maximum degradation (89% at 5 mg kg-1 of soil) of endosulfan at 120 days after sowing. Furthermore, the content of malondialdehyde was lower in inoculated plants as related to un-inoculated plants. Inoculation of PGPR strains efficiently enhanced plant biomass. The findings showed the effectiveness of PGPR strains to increase the decontamination of endosulfan stressed soil and decline endosulfan concentration in the plant tissues.Rapid and highly efficient treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) is still challenging due to the low pH and high metal concentrations in it. This research focuses on a novel treatment method of AMD using direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) and photocatalysis to recover water and utilize iron. In the DCMD process without pretreatment, the flux decreased by 93.38%. If pretreated by adding sodium oxalate, scale formation potential was effectively mitigated due to the removal of calcium and complexing of iron. For the treatment of the pretreated AMD (PAMD), 60% of water was recovered in the DCMD process with the flux decrease of 22%. The concentrate obtained from the DCMD process demonstrated high photocatalytic activity in the methylene blue (MB) degradation in an aqueous solution. In addition, the Fe (III)-oxalate complexes in the concentrate were reduced to insoluble Fe (II)-oxalate with visible light irradiation, which could be separated by sedimentation and used as a Fenton catalyst. Hence, this novel method exhibits great advantages on effectively inhibiting DCMD membrane fouling during AMD treatment, producing high-quality distillate with low conductivity, and realizing near zero-discharge of AMD.The presence of antimicrobials, antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (ARB), and the associated antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment is a global health concern. In this study, the concentrations of 25 antimicrobials, the resistance of Escherichia coli (E. coli) strains in response to the selection pressure imposed by 15 antimicrobials, and enrichment of 20 ARGs in E. coli isolated from hospital wastewaters and surface waters were investigated from 2016 to 2018. In hospital wastewaters, clarithromycin was detected at the highest concentration followed by sulfamethoxazole and sulfapyridine. Approximately 80% of the E. coli isolates were resistant, while 14% of the isolates exhibited intermediate resistance against the tested antimicrobial agents. Approximately 61% of the examined isolates were categorized as multidrug-resistant bacteria. The overall abundance of phenotypes that were resistant toward drugs was in the following order β-lactams, tetracycline, quinolones, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, aminoglycosides, and chloramphenicol. The data showed that the E. coli isolates frequently harbored blaTEM, blaCTX-M, tetA, qnrS, and sul2. These results indicated that personal care products were significantly associated with the presence of several resistant phenotypes and resistance genes, implying their role in co-association with multidrug resistance. Statistical analysis also indicated a disparity specific to the site, treatment, and year in the data describing the prevalence of ARB and ARGs and their release into downstream waters. This study provides novel insights into the abundance of antimicrobial, ARB and ARGs in Sri Lanka, and could further offer invaluable information that can be integrated into global antimicrobial resistance databases.Dietary intake is an important route of human exposure to chlorinated paraffins (CPs). Cup instant noodles are widely popular food and millions packet of instant noodles are consumed every year. To investigate the levels, congener groups, and health risk of SCCPs and MCCPs in each component of cup instant noodles, samples of nine common brands were collected and analyzed by comprehensive two dimensional gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The mean concentrations in the noodles were 1.2 × 103 ng/g wet weight (ww) (SCCPs) and 1.2 × 102 ng/g ww (MCCPs), the mean concentrations in the seasoning were 1.4 × 103 ng/g ww (SCCPs) and 1.3 × 102 ng/g ww (MCCPs), and the mean concentrations in the soup were 5.6 × 102 ng/L (SCCPs) and 5.4 × 102 ng/L (MCCPs). The SCCP to MCCP ratio were similar in the soup and soup container, which means CPs in the soup might be migrated from the soup container. Seasoning and noodles from the same brands have similar congener profiles of SCCPs and MCCPs, which may be raised from the manufacturing process or food packaging materials. The dominant SCCP congener groups were C10-11Cl6-7 in noodles and seasoning, and C10,13Cl6-7 in soup. The dominant MCCP congener groups were C14-15Cl6-7 in noodles and seasoning, and C14-15Cl6-7 in soup. A preliminary health risk assessment indicated that the current intakes of SCCPs and MCCPs through cup instant noodles in China did not pose a significant risk to human health.

Lipomas are the most common soft tissue tumor. Giant lipomas are defined by measuring at least 10 cm in diameter in one dimension or by a minimum of 1000 g. They often are asymptomatic; however, they can cause compression syndromes due to nerve damage and difficulties in walking.

We described the case of a 25-year-old female with no significant medical history who began her condition two years before her consultation. The patient referred to the appearance of a non-painful mass on her right thigh with progressive growth that hinders daily activities. A simple CT scan reported a 10.3 × 8.1 × 19.6 cm adipose mass with infiltration towards the semitendinosus muscle and the biceps femoris muscle. A free margin resection of the tumor was performed, and the involved muscles were preserved. The patient had a satisfactory postoperative outcome.

Lipomas are common benign soft tissue tumors that arise from fatty tissue and may challenge surgical management due to their extension and dimensions; they often require delicate surgical intervention due to their potential risk of malignant transformation. We believe surgical pathologists and radiologists must draw attention to muscle involvement and the infiltrative pattern.

Giant lipomas should always raise awareness of malignant transformation. Radiological guidance should provide enough evidence to decide whether to do a biopsy or not; hence, saving the patient an extra invasive procedure. We recommend taking at least 1 cm of border margin while removing these tumors to avoid local recurrence.

With an increasing incidence, there is aneed for low-cost, reliable biomarkers present in samples, which could be provided non-invasively (without a need to perform prostate biopsy). Glycosylation changes of free-PSA (fPSA) are considered cancer-specific, while the level of different PSA forms can increase under other than cancerous conditions. In the present study, we investigated the role ofN,N-diacetyllactosamine (LacdiNAc) epitope of fPSA (i.e. glycoprofile of fPSA or gPSA) in combination with total-PSA (tPSA), prostate volume, and tPSA density (tPSA level divided by prostate volume i.e. PSAd) as biomarkers for monitoring of PCa development and progression in 105 men. Furthermore, we applied an genetic (evolutionary) algorithm to identify any suspicious individuals in abenign cohort having benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). We identified 3 suspicious men originally diagnosed with BPH using gPSA analysis. In thefollow-up we found out that two men should not be considered as BPH patients since multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) identified one man with clinically significant PCa via Prostate Imaging - Reporting and Data System (PI RADS v2 = 4) and the second man was with High-gradeprostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (HG PIN), commonly described as apre-cancerous stage. Moreover, in the study we described for the first time that changed LacdiNAc on PSA can be applied to identify prostatitis patients and most importantly this is the first study suggesting that changed glycosylation on PSA can be applied to identify castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPCa) patients. The TET (Ten-Eleven Translocation) dioxygenase enzyme family comprising 3 members, TET1-3, play key roles in DNA demethylation. These processes regulate transcription programs that determine cell lineage, survival, proliferation, and differentiation. The impetus for our investigations described here is derived from the need to develop illuminating small molecule probes for TET enzymes with cellular activity and specificity. The studies were done so in the context of the importance of TET2 in the hematopoietic system and the preponderance of loss of function somatic TET2 mutations in myeloid diseases. We have identified that 2-hydroxy-4-methylene-pentanedicarboxylic acid 2a reversibly competes with the co-substrate α-KG in the TET2 catalytic domain and inhibits the dioxygenase activity with an IC50 = 11.0 ± 0.9 μM at 10 μM α-KG in a cell free system and binds in the TET2 catalytic domain with Kd = 0.3 ± 0.12 μM.
