This review explores the literature about the status and influence of statutory regulation in healthcare with a focus on medical imaging. It summarises the status of regulation in Australia for radiographers and sonographers, with brief reference to the global situation. The role of regulation is explored in terms of its evolution, function and effect on professional behaviours.

Reports of medical errors, sentinel events and professional misconduct in healthcare have raised concern about how health care professionals are regulated. Patient-centric healthcare delivery has changed how people interact with healthcare, contributing to the development of statutory regulation for many healthcare professions. In Australia, the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law (The National Law) 2009, established the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (NRAS) in order to practice. Not all health care professions are included in the scheme. In medical imaging, radiographers are included but sonographers are ave its aim of protecting the public, it is imperative that we understand the impact that it has on professional behaviours. This review highlights that it can negatively impact professional behaviours which may be detrimental to patient's safety.

To assess the value of referring to Diffusion-weighted images in evaluation of T2-weighted images of patients clinically suspicious of locoregional rectal cancer recurrence.

After ethics committee approval and informed consent were obtained, 37 consecutive patients (male/female of 22/15; mean age 56±13.5 SD) clinically suspicious of recurrent rectal tumor were prospectively included in the study over a two-year period. Selleckchem BMS-387032 T2-weighted images of the patients were reviewed and the results were recorded. Right after that, the corresponding DWI images were provided for the radiologist and new ratings were given to the patients after taking into account the DWI findings. Finally, the patients underwent tissue biopsy. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed, and Area Under the Curve (AUC) of the "T2-weighted alone" and "T2-weighted+DWI" methods were calculated and compared.

"T2-weighted alone" and "T2-weighted+DWI" methods had an AUC of 0.64 (95% CI 0.47 to 0.79) and 0.75 (95% CI 0.58 to 0.88), respectively. The Difference between the two AUCs was 0.11 (P=0.16). In the subgroup of patients having equivocal ratings in T2-weighted images, DWI images correctly identified 81% (13/16) of patients with true tumor recurrence and 66% (8/12) of patients without recurrence.

Our results suggest that referring to DWI does not significantly change the overall diagnostic performance of T2-weighted images. However, DWI is of great value in evaluation of the subgroup of patients with equivocal findings in T2-weighted images. Studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm these findings.

Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is a noninvasive imaging technique that reflects the diffusion movement of water molecules through apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values. The role of DWI in predicting the histological response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in osteosarcoma is being increasingly researched, and a systematic review and meta-analysis of this topic is urgentlyrequired to help determine the potential diagnostic value of DWI.

The present meta-analysis included 13 studies (303 patients). We divided the target population into good responders and poor responders based on tumor necrosis on histological biopsy (≥90%, good responders). The mean ADC values and ADC ratio were extracted and/or calculated for the two groups.

The receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE), a transmembrane receptor belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily, is overexpressed in pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and is implicated in the etiology of PAH. Recently, we reported that RAGE-aptamer, a short and single-stranded DNA directed against RAGE, inhibited an inappropriate increase in cultured PASMCs in PAH. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of RAGE-aptamer in monocrotaline-induced PAH in rats.

Rats were assigned to either an untreated control group, a group that received continuous subcutaneous administration of RAGE-aptamer immediately after monocrotaline injection, or a group that received control-aptamer immediately after monocrotaline injection. All rats survived 21 days after injection of monocrotaline and control-aptamer or RAGE-aptamer. Injection of monocrotaline with continuous subcutaneous delivery of control-aptamer resulted in higher right ventricular systolic pressure compared with controls.
