After laparotomy, the mare regularly fed and defecated, but a few days later, tachycardia, fever and abundant gastric reflux occurred. In this mare, recurrent small colon impaction was considered secondary to severe myenteric ganglionopathy associated with chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction.This study proposes a standardized image analysis method for assessing horse conformation. A total of 34 adult American Quarter Horses (mean age = 6.7 ± 2.9 years, body weight = 489 ± 44 kg) were used. In the present study, ten unconditioned horses were fed 200g per day DigestaWell NRG, a commercial dietary supplement containing Yucca schidigera and Trigonella foenum-graecum, two herbs shown in other species to reduce post-exercise muscle pain and soreness. A control, unsupplemented group contained ten horses of similar age, breed, and gender. Horses completed a 50 minutes, ridden standardized exercise test of moderate intensity immediately prior to (Period1) and after 28 days of supplementation (Period2). Muscle soreness and tightness were evaluated 24 hours prior to and after each exercise test and used to determine the percent increase in post-exercise muscle soreness and tightness. Blood samples were collected before, and at 10 and 30 minutes, and 1, 4, and 24 hours post exercise. Plasma was analyzed for glucose, lactate, non-esterified fatty acid, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukin-1β concentrations. Data were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA using SAS Enterprise Guide v. 7.1. No changes in plasma parameters were indicated between periods for unsupplemented horses (P > 0.1) during Period2, excepting glucose, which was greater during Period2 (P = 0.018). Supplemented horses had lesser concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-α (P = 0.016) and lactate (P = 0.058) during Period2 than during Period1. During Period2, supplemented horses experienced a smaller percent increase in post exercise muscle soreness (P = 0.031). DigestaWell NRG supplementation may benefit unconditioned horses undergoing moderate intensity exercise through reducing lactate production and inflammation.Alternative treatment options to glucocorticoids for equine asthma is desirable due to withdrawal time. The objective was to evaluate if serum and Respiratory Gene Technology (RGT), a commercial kit to produce autologous conditioned serum, was effective in reducing bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) neutrophils and mast cells in racehorses with cytological evidence of mild equine asthma . Thirty-six Standardbred trotters in active training were enrolled in this randomized clinical trial; a healthy control group (n=11), a RGT group (n=12) and a serum group (n=13). Endoscopy including tracheal wash (TW) and BAL was performed before (T0), after a 6-week treatment period including 12 intramuscular injections of RGT or serum (T6) and as a follow-up 10 weeks after treatment (T16). A significant decrease in BAL neutrophils for the RGT group was found between T0 and T6 (P = .002, d=-1.51, CI -2.43;-0.59) and for the serum group between T0-T6 (P = .002, d=-1.36, CI -2.26;-0.46). Further, a significant decrease in BAL mast cells between T0-T6 for the both the RGT group (P = .019, d=-1.23, CI -1.22;-0.34) and the serum group (P= .004, d=-0.81, CI -1.65;0.04), and further between T0-T16 (RGT P= .011, d=-1.55, CI -2.62;-0.48; serum P= .044, d=-0.65, CI -1.68;-0.37). No significant difference in TW cytology was found for any of the time-points. Pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines were regulated according to treatment. The control group showed no cytological differences between any time-point. Study results showed that intramuscular treatment with both RGT and serum was effective associated with reduction of BAL neutrophils and mast cells in horses with cytological evidence of mild equine asthma. Further large-scale studies are necessary.The fetlock joint is a high mobility structure that accommodates enormous loading during locomotion. An injury of the superficial constituent such as subtendinous bursitis may occur due to repeated trauma. An 8-year old school riding horse was presented with dorsomedial distension in the left hindlimb fetlock region. The lesion was noted following routine exercise. The horse demonstrated no lameness and a negative response to the fetlock flexion test. Radiographic findings revealed a smooth surface cortical thickening on the medial aspect of the distal third metatarsal bone. Furthermore, the ultrasonography showed synovial thickening and proliferation, fibrous thickening with an irregular border in the inner synovial lining, and local protuberance of the fibrous layer within the bursa beneath the long digital extensor tendon. Cytological examination of the fluid from the distended lesion discovered multiple nucleated cells, including synoviocytes, nondegenerate neutrophils, lymphocytes, and macrophages. Eventually, the horse suffered subtendinous bursitis of long digital extensor tendon in the left hindlimb fetlock region. Intrabursa administration of 10 mg triamcinolone acetate alongside 25 mg hyaluronan (HA) and subsequent pressure bandaging were performed in the affected fetlock area. The distension was substantially reduced after the 4-week recovery period post medical administration. In summary, the horse was diagnosed with long digital extensor subtendinous bursitis that can occur accidentally. The diagnostic imaging and cytological analysis of accumulated fluid benefited a critical evaluation and facilitated the selection of the appropriate therapeutic plan for this defect.Despite the extensive research on ocular ultrasonography, there is paucity of information regarding ocular biometry and color Doppler imaging of the donkey's eye. This study establishes B-scan ocular biometry and color Doppler ultrasonographic reference values in normal donkeys and describes effect of laterality, maturity and gender on ocular biometry and vasculature. Forty (80 eyes) clinically normal immature and mature donkeys of both sexes were included. Transpalpebral ocular ultrasonography was made using a 12-MHz linear transducer. Biometric ocular measurements were made including the anterior chamber depth, central lens thickness, vitreous chamber depth, axial globe length, longitudinal globe length, lens pole diameter and posterior wall thickness. Color Doppler velocimetric measurements including peak systolic velocity and end-diastolic velocity were made. Blood flow indices represented by resistive and pulsatility indices were calculated. Results revealed that laterality and gender did not represent variability factors in ocular biometry (P >.05), while the animal's maturity had an influence on axial globe length (P .05) while gender had significant effect on resistive index (P = .024), pulstality index (P = .000) and volume flow per area (P = .008). The state of maturity had significant effects on peak systolic velocity (P = .027) and blood volume flow per distance (P = .012), and area (P = .048). Ocular biometry and color Doppler ultrasonography provided a clinically useful tool to evaluate the donkey's eye that will be helpful in diagnosing donkeys with ocular diseases.Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can cause right dorsal colitis, but longitudinal clinical studies are lacking. This study investigates whether NSAID treated horses develop right dorsal colonic pathology in a clinical setting. Non-gastrointestinal hospitalized horses treated with NSAIDs >4 days, and untreated hospital-owned teaching horses and non-gastrointestinal client-owned hospitalized horses were included. All horses were monitored over time with clinical examinations (focusing on presence of colic, depression, reduced appetite, unstructured feces), ultrasonographic intestinal wall measurements, fecal occult blood tests (semi-quantitative results), and blood analysis (total protein and albumin concentrations, white blood cell and neutrophil counts). Outcomes were recorded as "ultrasonographically thickened right dorsal colon (RDC) walls", "colitis" and "right dorsal colitis". Findings over time were compared to baseline values and to control horses. Seventeen NSAID treated horses and 5 controls were included. NSAID treated horses developed thickened RDC walls (4/9), and subclinical and mild colitis (9/11) and right dorsal colitis (4/10), whereas all control horses remained healthy. The first changes were identified on treatment day 2. RDC walls of treated horses were significantly thicker compared to their own baseline values and compared to control horses. In conclusion, presumptive colon pathology was identified with a high incidence, starting early in the course of treatment, but with low severity. Appropriate monitoring should be advised throughout NSAID treatment. Additional research for noninvasive diagnostic tests for colon pathology is required.Skin lesions are among the leading diseases in equids, and the urogenital region is considered the third most frequently affected body location with tumors and tumor-like skin lesions in horses. Tumor-like skin lesions or multiple tumors of different types in the equine prepuce and penis are a challenging clinical presentation leading to misdiagnosis and subsequent ineffective treatment. An 18-year-old 395-kg male mixed-breed gelding was referred for evaluation of preputial enlargement. Clinical examination revealed a 2.5 × 2.0 × 0.8 cm proliferative ulcerated lesion on the penile mucosa, five ulcerated and circumscribed hardened wounds on the preputial skin fold from 2.0 to 6.0 cm in diameter, and multiple variable-sized raised exophytic lesions ranging from 2.0 mm to 2.3 cm cauliflower-like lesions throughout the prepuce and penis. Pathological and immunohistochemical findings confirmed the definitive diagnosis of three distinct proliferative lesions squamous cell carcinoma, squamous viral papilloma and cutaneous habronemiasis.
