Diabetes can cause some diseases or abnormalities. One of the disorders caused by diabetes may be erectile dysfunction (ED). ED is sexual dysfunction characterized by the inability to establish or maintain an erect penis during sexual activity and is a common problem of men with chronic type 2 diabetes. These processes, disorders and diseases are highly influenced by the genetics of individuals. In this study, the relationship between genes and diabetes and ED has been explored by a system biology approach. For this purpose, the samples from ten control and diabetic-ED rats were collected. After a search in Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), series with accession number GSE2457 comprising of 5 normal and 5 diabetic-ED rats were selected. Raw CEL files of these samples were normalized with robust multi-array average (RMA) expression measure method by using the linear models for microarray data (LIMMA) R package. The extracted probe IDs were transformed into 10451 unique and validated official gene symbols. The following circRNAs were mmu_circ_0001560, mmu_circ_0001800, mmu_circ_0001801, mmu_circ_0002281 and mmu_circ_0000614 were expressed low in type 1 diabetes mellitus mouse myocardial tissue. In conclusion, type 1 diabetes mellitus caused alterations in the regulation network of circRNAs.Nettle (Urtica dioica L), as a plant rich in biologically active compounds, is one of the most important plants used in herbal medicine. Studies have shown that this plant has antioxidant, antiplatelet, hypoglycemic and hypocholesterolemia effects. In this study, we characterized three Alternaria endophytic fungi isolated from their host U. dioica. We hypothesized that these endophytic fungi can produce new bioactive metabolites, which may possess the bioactive property with potential application in the medical and pharmaceutical industries. The antibacterial activity was evaluated against reference and isolated strains, including Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus. A wide range of antimicrobial activities similar to those measured in nettle leaves was detected especially for Alternaria sorghi. Furthermore, the highest antioxidant activity detected with DPPH free radical scavenging was measured for A. sorghi and nettle leaves ethyl acetate extracts. In addition, whereas catalase activity was similar in the three isolated fungi and nettle leaves, total thiol content and superoxide dismutase activity were significantly higher in leaves. A. sorghi showed the best activities compared to other isolated fungi. The characterization and further production of bioactive compounds produced by this endophyte should be investigated to fight bacteria and especially those that develop drug multi-resistance.Wealth of information has revolutionized our understanding related to the genetics and functional genomics of this heterogeneous disease. Keeping in view the heterogeneity of ovarian cancer, long-term survival might be achieved by translation of recently emerging mechanistic insights at the cellular and molecular levels to personalize individual strategies for treatment and to identify biomarkers for early detection. Importantly, the motility and invasive properties of ovarian cancer cells are driven by a repertoire of signaling cascades, many components of which have been experimentally verified as therapeutic targets in preclinical models as well as in clinical trials. Scientific evidence garnered over decades of research has deconvoluted the highly intricate intertwined network of intracellular signaling pathways which played fundamental role in carcinogenesis and metastasis. In this review we have provided a compendium of myriad of signaling cascades which have been documented to play critical role in the progression and metastasis of ovarian cancer. We have partitioned this multi-component review into different sections to individually discuss and summarize the roles of TGF/SMAD, JAK/STAT, Wnt/β-Catenin, NOTCH, SHH/GLI, mTORC1/mTORC2, VEGFR and Hippo/YAP pathways in ovarian cancer metastasis.

To evaluate Lebanese licensed dietitians' knowledge, prevalence of use and recommendation of dietary supplements (DS), and their associated factors.

Cross-sectional survey.

Dietitians across Lebanon were contacted through the telephone and were asked to participate in the study. An online self-administered questionnaire was designed and sent to dietitians either by email or by WhatsApp, between 4 March and 4 May 2020.

This study included 319 dietitians randomly selected from the dietitians' list that was provided by the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health.

Around 75 % of dietitians had a knowledge score above 50 %. Overall, 73·7 % of them have used DS and 46·1 % have recommended them. Higher knowledge score was associated with less years of experience, using scientific articles as source of information on DS, and participating in research. Resorting to pharmacists was significantly associated with both nutrient supplements (NS) and herbal supplements (HS) use, whereas referring to health food stores was associated with HS use only. NS recommendation to patients was associated with personal NS use (OR = 3·38, P < 0·001), considering pharmacists as a source of information on DS (OR = 2·29, P = 0·01) and discussing DS with patients (OR = 3·82, P = 0·01). Having personally used HS (OR = 12·23, P < 0·001) and having discussed DS with patients (OR = 8·51, P = 0·01) increased the likelihood of recommending HS.

A proper DS education, the elaboration of national scientific guidelines and the implementation of concise laws regarding the regulations of DS would play a crucial role in supporting dietitians' practices and improving the quality of patient care with respect to DS.

Therefore, this research aimed to develop a novel evidence-based DQI specific to older adults (DQI-65). Three DQI-65 variations were developed to assess the impacts of different component quantitation methods and inclusion of physical activity. These were Nutrient and Food-based DQI-65 (NFDQI-65), NFDQI-65 with Physical Activity (NFDQI-65+PA) and Food-based DQI-65 with Physical Activity (FDQI-65+PA). To assess their individual efficacy, the NFDQI-65, NFDQI-65+PA and FDQI-65+PA were explored alongside the validated Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) and Alternative Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI-2010) using data from the cross-sectional UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) rolling programme. Scores for DQI-65 variations, the HEI-2015 and AHEI-2010 were calculated for adults ≥ 65 years from years 2-6 of the NDNS (n 871). Associations with nutrient intake, nutrient status and health markers were analysed using linear and logistic regression. Higher DQI-65 and HEI-2015 scores were associated with increased odds of meeting almost all our previously proposed age-specific nutritional recommendations, and with important health markers of importance for older adults, including lower BMI, lower medication use and lower C-reactive protein (P less then 0·01). Few associations were observed for the AHEI-2010. This analysis suggests value of all three DQI-65 as measures of dietary quality in UK older adults. The objective of this study was to investigate whether glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is a valid surrogate for evaluating the effectiveness of antihyperglycemic drugs in diabetes mellitus (DM) trials.

We conducted a systematic review of placebo-controlled randomized clinical trials (RCTs) evaluating the effect of a treatment on HbA1c (mean difference between groups) and clinical outcomes (relative risk of mortality, myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure, and/or kidney injury) in patients with DM. Then, we investigated the association between treatment effects on HbA1c and clinical outcomes using regression analysis at the trial level. Lastly, we interpreted the correlation coefficients (R) using the cut-off points suggested by the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Healthcare (IQWiG). HbA1c was considered a valid surrogate if it demonstrated a strong association lower limit of the 95 percent confidence interval (95 percent CI) of R greater than or equal to .85.

Nineteen RCTs were identified. All studies included adults with type 2 DM. None of the associations evaluated was strong enough to validate HbA1c as a surrogate for any clinical outcome mortality (R = .34; 95 percent CI -.14 to .69), myocardial infarction (R = .20; -.30 to .61), heart failure (R = .08; -.40 to .53), kidney injury (R = -.04; -.52 to .47), and stroke (R = .81; .54 to .93).

The trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (ID NCT04538365).Even though sunlight is viewed as the most important determinant of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) status, several European studies have observed higher 25(OH)D concentrations among north-Europeans than south-Europeans. We studied the association between geographical latitude (derived from ecological data) and 25(OH)D status in six European countries using harmonised immunoassay data from 81 084 participants in the Biomarkers for Cardiovascular Risk Assessment in Europe (BiomarCaRE) project (male sex 48·9 %; median age 50·8 years; examination period 1984-2014). Quantile regression models, adjusted for age, sex, decade and calendar week of sampling and time from sampling to analysis, were used for between-country comparisons. Up until the median percentile, the ordering of countries by 25(OH)D status (from highest to lowest) was as follows Sweden (at 65·6-63·8°N), Germany (at 48·4°N), Finland (at 65·0-60·2°N), Italy (at 45·6-41·5°N), Scotland (at 58·2-55·1°N) and Spain (at 41·5°N). From the 75th percentile and upwards, Finland had higher values than Germany.
