Graphical abstract.Recently, there is growing evidence that ambient temperature and seasonal changes are related to the incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Thereby, this study was conducted to evaluate the association between seasonal changes and ambient temperature and GDM. We conducted a systematic search in PubMed, ISI Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Collaboration for human studies available until the end of 2020. We used the following keywords to identify relevant articles "Diabetes, Gestational" (MeSH), "Glucose Tolerance Test" (MeSH), "Glucose intolerance" (MeSH), "Pregnancy outcome" (MeSH), "Birth outcome", "Seasons" (MeSH), "Weather" (MeSH), "Ambient Temperature," "Climate Change" (MeSH). Meta-analyses by using STATA software were conducted for analyzing data. Due to the high heterogeneity between included studies, a random-effects model was used. Subgroup analysis, meta-regression, and sensitivity analysis were used to define a source of heterogeneity. We found 13 studies related to the association between ambient temperature and season changes and GDM, which 11 of them were included in meta-analyses. Despite inconsistencies in outcome assessment across studies, we found a significant positive association between seasons of GDM screening and risk of GDM (pooled OR=1.12; 95% CI (1.03, 1.21)). The funnel plot and Egger's test showed that there was no significant publication bias among these studies (p=0.51). In general, season changes showed a significant positive relationship with prevalence of GDM. However, due to the unknown exact mechanism on this association, further studies should be conducted. Many studies have evaluated factors that influence the course of the COVID-19 pandemic in different countries. This multicountry study assessed the influence of democracy and other factors on the case fatality rate of COVID-19 during the early stage of the pandemic. We accessed the World Health Organization, World Bank, and the Democracy Index 2019 databases for data from the 148 countries. Multiple analyses were conducted to examine the association between the Democracy Index and case fatality rate of COVID-19. Within 148 countries, the percentage of the population aged 65 years and above (p = 0.0193), and health expenditure as a percentage of GDP (p = 0.0237) were positively associated with countries' case fatality rates. By contrast, hospital beds per capita helped to reduce the case fatality rates. In particular, the Democracy Index was positively associated with case fatality rates in a subgroup of 47 high-income countries. This study suggests that enhancing the health system with increased hospital beds and healthcare workforce per capita should reduce case fatality rate. The findings suggest that a higher Democracy Index is associated with more deaths from COVID-19 at the early stage of the pandemic, possibly due to the decreased ability of the government.Sustainability is a strategic choice for the transition to a green economy in China. Improving green total factor energy efficiency (GTFEE) is the key to realizing the dual targets of energy-saving and economic growth. This paper empirically tests the nonlinear effects of environmental regulation on technical innovation affecting GTFEE by using panel data of 271 prefecture-level cities in China from 2004 to 2019. Meanwhile, a system GMM approach is used to verify the channels through which technical innovation affects GTFEE. 3-MA datasheet Finally, the spatial and temporal characteristics of technical innovation affecting GTFEE are analyzed from the perspective of environmental regulation. The empirical results are as follows (1) Technical innovation can significantly improve GTFEE. However, this improvement effect is a threshold characteristic; when environmental regulation is above the threshold value, technical innovation has a greater improvement effect on GTFEE. (2) Besides directly influencing GTFEE, technical innovation can also indirectly influence GTFEE via channels such as economic growth effect, industrial structure upgrading effect, and foreign investment effect. Meanwhile, indirect influence channels also show environmental regulation heterogeneity. (3) The number of cities crossing the threshold of environmental regulation in China increases year by year, which helps technical innovation play a role in improving GTFEE. However, there are still a small number of cities that do not cross the threshold during the sample period, which should attract the attention of local governments.Recognizing the vulnerable areas for contamination is a feasible way to protect groundwater resources. The main contribution of the paper is developing a hybrid statistical decision-making model for evaluating the vulnerability of Shiraz aquifer, southern Iran, with modified DRASTIC (depth to the water table, net recharge, aquifer media, soil media, topography, impact of the vadose zone, and hydraulic conductivity) by using the genetic algorithm (GA), the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method, and factorial analysis (FA). First, considering the variation of the uncertain parameters, 32 scenarios were defined to perform factorial analysis. Then using the AHP method and GA, DRASTIC parameters were rated and weighted in all scenarios. To achieve the optimal weights for parameters, the objective function in GA was maximizing the correlation coefficient between the vulnerability index and the nitrate concentration. The single and interactive effects of parameters on groundwater vulnerability were analyzed by factorial analysis. The results revealed that the net recharge had the highest single effect, and the resulted effect between net recharge and hydraulic conductivity was the most significant interactive effect on the objective function. Besides, the variation of aquifer media does not change the objective function. The application of the proposed method leads to a precise groundwater vulnerability map. This research provides valuable knowledge for assessing groundwater vulnerability and enables decision-makers to apply groundwater vulnerability information in future water resources management plans. There are no specific drugs for the treatment of Japanese Encephalitis. Thus, new chemical entities or exploration of existing molecules is required. We have tested the antiviral potential of abscisic acid and aloe-emodin against protease of the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) using the computational and target-based assay. Maestro Schrödinger glide suite 2019 was used for molecular docking and dynamic studies, and NS2B-NS3A JEV protease kit was used to confirm protease inhibitory activity of abscisic acid and aloe-emodin. The abscisic acid and aloe-emodin have shown optimum binding affinity towards NS2B-NS3A protease of JEV. Furthermore, molecular dynamic simulation results have also shown the stability of abscisic acid and aloe-emodin within the binding pocket of NS2B-NS3A protease. The ADME parameters of both compounds were also found in an acceptable range. The IC50 values were found to be 100 μg/ml and 7.3 μg/ml for abscisic acid and aloe-emodin respectively which indicate more potency of aloe-emodin over the abscisic acid. However, the toxicity prediction results have shown a good safety profile of abscisic acid as compared to aloe-emodin. Thus, further, more detailed experimental studies are required to develop abscisic acid and aloe-emodin as a specific protease inhibitor of JEV.Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) are among the most commonly used nano-fertilizers (NF). However, elevated levels of ZnO-NPs in soil may affect plant growth and development due to its potential toxicity when accumulated in large amounts in plant tissues. This research was conducted using an in situ rhizobox system with the aims of evaluating zinc uptake from nano-zinc oxide amended rhizosphere soil by alfalfa plant and the effect of plant growth-promoting microorganisms on alleviating the phytotoxicity of ZnO-NPs. Treatments included microbial inoculations (Sinorhizobium meliloti, Serendipita indica) and different ZnO-NP concentrations (0, 400, and 800 mg kg-1) with three replications. The results indicated that S. indica minimized the phytotoxicity of ZnO-NPs to alfalfa by enhancing growth rate and decreasing zinc (Zn) translocation from root to shoot. Compared with plants inoculated with S. meliloti, co-inoculation with S. indica increased the shoot dry weight by 18.33% and 8.05% at 400 and 800 mg kg-1 Znrial parts of the host plants. The imminent arrival of nanoparticles (NPs) to the wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) brings concern about their effects, which can be related to the wastewater composition. link2 In this work, the effects of titanium dioxide (TiO2) NPs in the removal of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus by activated sludge bioreactors during the treatment of synthetic, raw, and filtered wastewaters were evaluated. Floc size, compaction of sludge, and morphological interactions between sludge and NPs were also determined. The main effect of TiO2 NPs was the inhibition of up to 22% in the removal of ammonia nitrogen for all types of wastewaters. This effect is strong dependent on combined factors of TiO2 NPs concentration and content of organic matter and ammonia in wastewater. The removal of dissolved organic carbon was affected by TiO2 NPs in lower level (up to 6%) than nitrogen removal for all types of wastewaters. Conversely to adverse effects, the removals of orthophosphate in the presence of TiO2 NPs were improved by 34%, 16%, and 55% for synthetic, raw, and filtered wastewater, respectively. Compaction of the sludge was also enhanced as the concentrations of NPs increased without alterations in the floc size for all types of wastewaters. Based on TEM and STEM imaging, the main interaction between TiO2 NPs and the activated sludge flocs was the adsorption of NPs on cell membrane. This means that NPs can be attached to cell membrane during aerobic wastewater treatment, and potentially disrupt this membrane. The effects of TiO2 NPs on macronutrient removal clearly depended on wastewater characteristics; hence, the use of realistic media is highly encouraged for ecotoxicological experiments involving NPs.Cyclodextrins (CDs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are emerging absorbent materials for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, we have used combination of modified CDs and levulinic acid to form four DESs analogs, referred to as supramolecular low-melting mixtures (LMMs), to study their absorption characteristics towards five VOCs, namely acetaldehyde, butanone, dichloromethane, thiophene, and toluene. The supramolecular LMMs showed up to 250-fold reduction in the vapor-liquid partition coefficients compared to water. The overall absorption capacity found to be synergistic and seemed to be dictated by the hydrophobicity of the VOCs. link3 Toluene and dichloromethane were absorbed at 99 and 95% by the supramolecular LMMs, respectively, even at higher concentrations, with a linear relationship between the concentration and absorption capacity. The LMMs also retained their absorption capacities even after five absorption/desorption cycles.Acute kidney injury is a common problem in dogs and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. So, the present study aimed to evaluate symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) and Doppler ultrasonography including resistive index (RI) in the diagnosis of acute kidney injury in dogs. Ten healthy mongrel dogs were injected with gentamicin sulfate 10% at the dose of 30 mg/kg body weight daily for 10 days for induction of acute kidney injury. Clinical, biochemical, ultrasonographic, and Doppler ultrasonographic examinations and urinalysis were performed for all dogs on 0 day before induction, on the 5th day, and on the 10th day of induction. The results of the current study showed significant increase in plasma level of SDMA, serum urea, creatinine, phosphorus, and potassium and a significant decrease in serum sodium, calcium, and chloride on the 5th day and 10th day of induction, and there was an increase in renal cortical echogenicity of the right and left kidney compared to adjacent liver and spleen, respectively.
