We studied switch costs (the performance difference between task-repeat and task-switch trials) in terms of accuracy and mean reaction times (RTs). Previous aging research focused on switch costs in terms of mean RTs (with accuracy at ceiling). Our results emphasize the importance of distinguishing between switch costs indexed by accuracy and by RTs because these measures lead to different interpretations. We used the Diffusion Decision Model (DDM; Ratcliff, 1978) to study the cognitive components contributing to switch costs. The DDM decomposed the cognitive process of task switching into multiple components. Two parameters of the model, the quality of evidence on which decisions were based (drift rate) and the duration of processes outside the decision process (nondecision time component), indexed different sources of switch costs. We found that older participants had larger switch costs indexed by nondecision time component than younger participants. This result suggests age-related deficits in preparatory cognitive processes. We also found group differences in switch costs indexed by drift rate for switch trials with high stimulus interference (stimuli with features relevant for both tasks). This result suggests that older participants have less effective cognitive processes involved in resolving interference. Our findings show that age-related effects in separate components of switch costs can be studied with the DDM. Our results demonstrate the utility of using discrimination tasks with degraded stimuli in conjunction with model-based analyses. Here, we measured how stochastic choices revealed preferences for 2-component milkshakes. The preferences were intuitively graphed as indifference curves that represented the orderly integration of the 2 components as trade-off parts of 1 component were given up for obtaining 1 additional unit of the other component without a change in preference. The well-ordered, nonoverlapping curves satisfied leave-one-out tests, followed predictions by machine learning decoders and correlated with single-dimensional Becker-DeGroot-Marschak (BDM) auction-like bids for the 2-component rewards. This accuracy suggests a decision process that integrates multiple reward components into single-dimensional estimates in a systematic fashion. In interspecies comparisons, human performance matched that of highly experienced laboratory monkeys, as measured by accuracy of the critical trade-off between bundle components. Although team-level studies have emerged, these empirical studies have adopted a static approach. We pivot from the predominant static focus on passion by examining passion convergence, or the dynamic pattern of increasing similarity in passion among members of a team. Drawing on multilevel theory of emergence in teams and using the novel consensus emergence model approach, we theorize the phenomenon of passion convergence and focus on how within-team experiences of progress and setback shape passion convergence. We also analyze the impact of passion convergence on team performance. Data from 314 individuals nested in 82 new venture teams indicate that experiencing team progress facilitated passion convergence, whereas experiencing team setbacks did not have a significant impact on passion convergence. Results also suggest that teams with members converging on a high level of passion positively predicted team performance. We discuss the theoretical and practical significance of our study. Treatment options for patients presenting with life-threatening splanchnic ischemia, including that of the intestine and liver, could previously only receive salvage surgery and attempted medical revascularization. We propose that urgent liver transplantation (LT) for acute liver failure (ALF) due to massive liver necrosis should be considered as a life-saving treatment. We successfully performed urgent living donor LT for nonocclusive hepatic ischemia accompanied by nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI).

An 11-month-old boy with biliary atresia whose jaundice was re-elevated after Kasai portoenterostomy underwent cysto-jejunostomy. Three hours after the uneventful operation, tachycardia, hypotension, and unconsciousness suddenly occurred. Computed tomography revealed whole-liver and massive splenic and focal intestinal ischemia without any vessel occlusion. Urgent LT was performed on postoperative day 3 because intensive therapies, including prostaglandin E1 administration, blood transfusion, and continuous hemodiafiltration, were not effective and the patient had developed life-threatening bradycardia and hypotension. Intraoperative findings included whole-liver necrosis and splenic ischemia and segmental ileal necrosis without any vessel thrombus. LT and necrotic intestinal resections by end-to-end anastomosis were performed. Massive liver necrosis with Gram-positive cocci was histopathologically identified, indicating bacterial translocation due to NOMI. The post-LT course was uneventful, and the neurologic outcomes were uncomplicated.

Cloth face covering has been recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to decrease community viral transmission. This study aims to determine the filtration efficiency and airflow resistance of common household materials available for homemade mask production by comparing numbers of fabrics, various layers, and manipulation.

Common household woven, knitted, and nonwoven fabrics were tested for filtration efficiency using a fit testing setup and airflow resistance with pressure gauge setup. Three different levels of layering (1, 2, and 4) were tested. Some fabric material was further tested after washing and drying. Filtration performance, the area under the fitted curve comparing airflow resistance and filtration efficiency, was calculated for each fabric material and compared.

Layering increased filtration efficiency and airflow resistance (P < 0.0001 and P < 0.01, respectively). Polyester felt demonstrated the highest filtration performance index (P < 0.0001), higher than all tested 100% cotton materials (all P < 0.05) as well as surgical masks (P < 0.05). Washing plus drying did not alter filtration performance significantly (P > 0.05).

GCs are well known for their anti-inflammatory effects that suppress the production of inflammatory cytokines and induce the apoptosis of lymphocytes. Recent studies in mice, however, have revealed pro-inflammatory effects. The diurnal oscillation of GCs induces the expression of IL-7 receptor α (IL-7Rα) and C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) at the active phase, which drives the diurnal homing of T cells into lymphoid organs. This accumulation of T cells at the active phase enhances T-cell priming against bacterial infection and antigen immunization, leading to an increase of effector CD8 T cells and antibody production. GCs induced by moderate stress trigger the homing of memory CD8 T cells into the bone marrow and support the maintenance and response of these cells. Thus, endogenous GCs have a self-defense function to enhance adaptive immune responses. By contrast, strong stress induces even higher GC levels and causes chronic inflammation and autoimmunity.
