We investigated perceived timing in auditory rate perception using a reproduction task. The study aimed to test (a) whether central tendency occurs in rate perception, as shown for interval timing, and (b) whether rate is perceived independently on each trial or shows a serial dependence, as shown for other perceptual attributes. Participants were well able to indicate perceived rate as reproduced and presented rates were linearly related with a slope that approached unity, although tapping significantly overestimated presented rates. While the slopes approached unity, they were significantly less than 1, indicating a central tendency in which reproduced rates tended towards the mean of the presented range. We tested for serial dependency by seeing if current trial rate reproductions depended on the preceding rate. In two conditions, a positive dependence was observed. A third condition in which participants withheld responses on every second trial produced a negative dependency. These results suggest separate components of serial dependence linked to stimulus and response Withholding responses reveals a negative perceptual effect, whereas making responses adds a stronger positive effect that is postperceptual and makes the combined effect positive. Together, these data show that auditory rate perception exhibits both central tendency and serial dependence effects.Chemical intolerance is a surprisingly prevalent condition or affliction characterized by adverse reactions to low levels of chemical, often odorous stimulation. Sufferers often assume that their plight is due to an uncommon sensory acuteness, yet studies repeatedly fail to reveal altered detection thresholds. Here, we investigated whether self-reported chemical intolerance is associated with altered sensory sensitivity or response bias. The sensory acuity (sensitivity; A) and sensory decision rule (criterion; B) to n-butanol was assessed using the method of constant stimuli in 82 participants with different degrees of chemical intolerance (low to high). Higher self-reported chemical intolerance was associated with a lower criterion, but not with sensitivity.Combined 18F-fluoro-deoxyglucose ([18F]FDG) positron emission tomography and computed tomography ([18F]FDG-PET/CT) is increasingly used for the diagnostic and therapeutic management of hematologic and non-hematologic malignancies. Here, we describe a unique case of a patient presenting with very severe aplastic anemia and a mediastinal mass showing disseminated hypermetabolic lesions of the bones after receiving granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), highly suspicious for disseminated metastatic lesions. click here A 71-year-old patient presented with a 3 week history of dyspnea and fatigue. Blood tests showed severe pancytopenia and iliac crest bone marrow biopsy revealed an extensively hypoplastic bone marrow. Diagnostic work-up by histology, conventional cytogenetics and flow cytometry confirmed the diagnosis of very severe aplastic anemia. Besides blood transfusions, the patient was treated with G-CSF. Furthermore, computed tomography revealed a suspect mass in the anterior mediastinum, presenting with moderion. Repeating PET/CT scan after G-CSF discontinuation can prevent unnecessary invasive diagnostic procedures in these patients. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted resource constraints in respiratory support. The oxygen transfer characteristics of a specific hollow fiber membrane dialyser was investigated with a view to repurposing the device as a low-cost, readily available blood oxygenator. Oxygen transfer in a low-flux hollow fiber dialyser with a polysulfone membrane was studied by passing first water and then blood through the dialyser in countercurrent to high-purity oxygen. Oxygen transfer rates of about 15% of the nominal 250 ml (STP)/min of a typical adult oxygen consumption rate were achieved for blood flow rates of 500 ml/min. Using two such dialysis devices in parallel could provide up to 30% of the nominal oxygen consumption. Specific hollow fiber dialysis devices operating with suitable pumps in a veno-venous access configuration could provide a cost-effective and readily available supplementation of respiratory support in the face of severe resource constraints.Prompt diagnosis of benign and malignant breast masses is essential for early breast cancer screening. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can be used to assist in the classification of benign and malignant breast masses. A persistent problem in current mammography mass classification via CNN is the lack of local-invariant features, which cannot effectively respond to geometric image transformations or changes caused by imaging angles. In this study, a novel model that trains both texton representation and deep CNN representation for mass classification tasks is proposed. Rotation-invariant features provided by the maximum response filter bank are incorporated with the CNN-based classification. The fusion after implementing the reduction approach is used to address the deficiencies of CNN in extracting mass features. This model is tested on public datasets, CBIS-DDSM, and a combined dataset, namely, mini-MIAS and INbreast. The fusion after implementing the reduction approach on the CBIS-DDSM dataset outperforms that of the other models in terms of area under the receiver operating curve (0.97), accuracy (94.30%), and specificity (97.19%). Therefore, our proposed method can be integrated with computer-aided diagnosis systems to achieve precise screening of breast masses.Lipomas are benign mesenchymatous soft tissue tumours occurring mostly in the subcutaneous areas of the body. They are usually asymptomatic painless swellings, presenting with a large size in adults. Giant lipomas are rarely reported in adults as well as in children. A case of giant lateral thoracoabdominal wall lipoma in a child has been reported here. This study examines whether surgical resection of carotid body tumors (CBTs) is acceptable in light of potential significant neurologic complications. This IRB-approved retrospective study analyzed data from 24 patients undergoing surgical treatment for CBTs between April 1998 and April 2017 at Mayo Clinic (Florida campus only). For patients who underwent multiple CBT resections, only data from the first surgery was used in this analysis. CBT resection occurred in 24 patients with the following demographics fourteen patients (58.3%) were female, median age was 56.5 years, median BMI was 29. A prior history of neoplasm was found in ten patients (41.7%). A known family history of paraganglioma was present in five patients (20.8%). Two patients were positive for succinate dehydrogenase mutation (8.3%). Multiple paragangliomas were present in seven patients (29.2%). There was nerve sacrifice in three patients (12.5%) during resection. Carotid artery reconstruction and patch angioplasty occurred in one patient (4.
