Improvements in endoscopes and accessories have supported an increase in the number of patients who are conservatively treated with endoscopic dilations. In this study, we aimed to detect factors affecting the outcome of endoscopic dilatation for refractory post-corrosive oesophageal stricture. METHODS This study was carried out in the Paediatric Endoscopy Unit in the Children's Hospital and included 100 children older than 2 years of age of both sexes who had an established diagnosis of post-corrosive oesophageal stricture on repeated endoscopic dilatation sessions. The mean age of enrolled children was 5.9 ± 2.6 years; 90% of patients ingested an alkaline corrosive substance (potash). In this work, we analyze the DNA sequences of thirteen alleles from each of ten microsatellite loci described for the yeast Starmerella bacillaris. Our results show that polymorphic variants of some informative alleles are dependent on SNPs and indels rather than on length variation at their originally defined tandem-repeated motifs. The analysis was extended to 55 previously described hypervariable microsatellite loci from a total of 26 sequenced genomes of yeast species that dominate the microbiota of spontaneously fermenting grape musts (i.e., Hanseniaspora uvarum, Saccharomyces cerevisae, Saccharomyces uvarum, and Torulaspora delbrueckii) or lead to wine spoilage (Brettanomyces bruxellensis and Meyerozyma guilliermondii). We found that allelic variants for some microsatellite loci of these yeast species are also dependent on SNPs and/or indels flanking their tandem-repeated motifs. For some loci, the number of units at their tandem repeats was found to be identical among the various characterized alleles, with allelic differences being dependent exclusively on flanking polymorphisms. Our results indicate that allele sizing of microsatellite loci using PCR, although valid for strain differentiation and population genetic studies, does not necessarily score the number of units at their tandem-repeated motifs. Recently, improvements in treatment approaches for NSCLC have reported, but still, there is a need to devise innovative treatment strategies, especially to manage the advanced and metastatic stage of NSCLC. Aloperine (ALO), an herbal alkaloid, has exerted anti-cancer effects in many cancers. However, the use of any chemotherapeutic agents is dose limited due to possible adverse effects and drug-resistance issues. link2 Therefore, a combination of chemotherapy with viral-based targeted gene therapy may provide a novel treatment strategy for NSCLC. METHODS/RESULTS In this study, the results of the MTT and flow cytometry-based assays showed that Aloperine-Adbic (adenoviral vector expressing p14ARF/p53) combined treatment on NSCLC cells synergistically produced anti-proliferative effects, induced apoptosis, and arrested cell cycle at the G1 phase. Furthermore, the expression analysis suggested that the p53/p21 pathway might contribute to achieving aforesaid cytotoxic effects. The ALO-Adbic combined treatment prolonged the percent survival of NSCLC xenograft models. CONCLUSION In conclusion, ALO-Adbic combination can produce synergistic anti-cancer effects at low doses, and may offer a more effective and less toxic new treatment strategy for NSCLC.PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal method for measuring pathological invasive size that predicts prognosis in invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma (IMA). METHODS We analyzed patients who underwent complete surgical resection for lung IMA. The invasive size of IMA was measured using two methods (1) excluding lepidic method (ELM), that is, lepidic component was excluded from the invasive area regardless of alveolar mucin and (2) including lepidic method (ILM), that is, lepidic component was included as invasive area if alveolar space was filled with mucin. The prognostic predictability of ELM and ILM on survival was assessed using univariable and multivariable Cox regression models. The discriminative power was assessed using concordance probability estimate (CPE) and Akaike's information criteria (AIC), and the prognostic impact of the newly redefined pathological stage according to ELM or ILM was also assessed. RESULTS A total of 101 patients were included. The median invasive size via ELM and ILM was 1.4 cm (range, 0.0-7.7 cm) and 2.1 cm (range, 0.0-14.2 cm), respectively. ELM had better discriminative power than ILM (ELM, HR = 1.38, AIC = 110.19, CPE = 0.671; ILM, HR = 1.19, AIC = 111.52, CPE = 0.655). Although the survival curves based on ILM crossed between T3 and T4, the overall survival (OS) curves based on ELM were sufficiently distinct from one another. CONCLUSIONS ELM has higher discriminative power for OS, and thus the optimal method for measuring the pathological invasive size of IMA should exclude the lepidic component regardless of alveolar mucin.BACKGROUND Hepatic artery infusion (HAI) and drug selection by liquid biopsy precision oncotherapy are under investigation for the multidisciplinary treatment of unresectable colorectal liver metastases (CRCLM) in progression after systemic therapy. Here, we compare the safety and efficacy of third-line HAI followed by target therapy with drug regimes selected by liquid biopsy precision oncotherapy to third-line systemic therapy with drug regimes selected partly by tissue biopsy precision oncotherapy, in a retrospective real-life study of 106 unresectable CRCLM patients. For many countries, the treatment of saline wastewater has become an important task. Generally, saline wastewaters are treated through physical and chemical methods. However, these traditional techniques are associated with higher treatment costs and the generation of byproducts. In contrast, biotreatment techniques are environmentally friendly and inexpensive. This review highlights the sources and environmental concerns of high-salinity wastewater and illustrates the latest problems and solutions to the use of biological approaches for treating saline wastewater. Although high salinity may inhibit the effectiveness of aerobic and anaerobic biological wastewater treatment methods, such strategies as selecting salt-adapted microorganisms capable of degrading pollutants with tolerance to high salinity and optimizing operating conditions can be effective. This mini-review may serve as a reference for future efforts to treat high-salinity wastewater.Odd-chain fatty acids (OCFAs) naturally occur in bacteria, higher animals, and in plants. During recent years, they have received increasing attention due to their unique pharmacological properties and usefulness for agricultural and industrial applications. Recently, OCFAs have been identified and quantified in a few organisms, and new pharmacological functions of OCFAs have been reported. Some of the publications are related to the optimization of OCFA production through fermentation and genetic engineering. The present review aims to provide a summary on the recent progress in the field of microbial-derived OCFAs. More specifically, we outline the publications of OCFAs related to (i) different sources of OCFAs; (ii) endogenous synthesis of OCFAs; (iii) production of OCFAs through fermentation; (iv) genetic engineering related to OCFA; and (v) role of OCFAs in human health and disease. Finally, some areas that require further research are discussed.PURPOSE To report outcomes of percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC) catheter placement in patients with acute cholecystitis (AC) and propose management algorithm of AC after PC catheter placement based on the outcomes. METHOD AND MATERIALS Retrospective study was performed. 419 patients who underwent PC between July 2010 and September 2016 were included. Patients who underwent PC for indication other than AC were excluded. The primary outcome was definitive treatment of AC following PC, including cholecystectomy or percutaneous cholecystolithotomy. Secondary outcomes include removal of drainage catheter without further management or death with catheter in place. Based on outcomes, we proposed management algorithm of AC after PC catheter placement. RESULTS 377 of 419 patients underwent PC for treatment of AC (median age, 66 years; range 18-100 years). Technical success rate was 100% with 2.4% major complications rate and 1.6% minor complications rate. Following PC, 118 patients (31%) underwent definitive treatment with cholecystectomy.
