In this study, we provide the first characterisation of the volumetric behaviour of blood clots. We propose a new hyperelastic model for the volumetric and isochoric deformation of clot. We demonstrate that the proposed model provides significant improvements over established models in terms of accurate prediction of nonlinear stress-strain and volumetric behaviours of clots with low and high red blood cell compositions. We perform a rigorous investigation of the factors that govern clot occlusion of a tapered vessel. The motivation for such an analysis is twofold (i) the role of clot composition on the in vivo occlusion location is an open clinical question that has significant implications for thrombectomy procedures; (ii) in vitro measurement of occlusion location in an engineered tapered tube can be used as a quick and simple methodology to assess the mechanical properties/compositions of clots. Simulations demonstrate that both isochoric and volumetric behaviours of clots are key determinants of clot lodgement location, in addition to clot-vessel friction. The proposed formulation is shown to provide accurate predictions of in vitro measurement of clot occlusion location in a silicone tapered vessel, in addition to accurately predicting the deformed shape of the clot.
To analyze ERG responses from two dog models of retinitis pigmentosa, one due to a PDE6A mutation and the other a CNGB1 mutation, both to assess the effect of these mutations on retinal function and the ability of gene augmentation therapy to restore normal function.
Scotopic and photopic ERGs from young affected and normal control dogs and affected dogs following AAV-mediated gene augmentation therapy were analyzed. Parameters reflecting rod and cone function were collected by modeling the descending slope of the a-wave to measure receptor response and sensitivity. This study aimed to examine the effect of refractive correction on the gradient of AC/A ratio with low-to-moderate myopia in children and adolescents. Children and adolescents aged 8-18 years, with low and moderate myopia, were divided into groups of myopia with no refractive correction and myopic continuous refractive correction of more than half a year. Then, in accordance with the myopia gradient, they were further divided into 0.00 to - 1.50, - 1.75 to - 3.00, - 3.25 to - 4.50, and - 4.75 to - 6.00 groups. Results showed that the AC/A ratio of the myopic group without refractive correction history was significantly higher than that with refractive correction history for more than half a year. The AC/A ratio increased with the deepening of myopia in the group without refractive history of myopia. However, it decreased significantly in the group with refractive history of myopia for more than half a year. Therefore, the AC/A ratio is related to the degree of uncorrected myopia, and it increases with the degree of uncorrected myopia.
To show alterations of retinal arteriolar caliber (RAC), retinal venular caliber (RVC), retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT), peripapillary choroidal thickness (ppCT), and central macular thickness (CMT) in acute and chronic phases of nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION).
Forty-one eyes of 41 patients with NAION were included in this retrospective study. RAC, RVC, RNFLT, ppCT, and CMT measurements were performed via spectral-domain optical coherence tomography in the acute and chronic phases of NAION.
RVC, RNFLT, ppCT, and CMT were significantly thinner in the chronic phase compared to the acute phase (p < 0.001), whereas RAC remained similar throughout the visits (p = 0.26). The visual acuity difference between the acute and chronic phases was not correlated with the changes of RAC, RVC, RNFLT, ppCT, or CMT.
