The monocyte β2-integrin Mac-1 is crucial for leukocyte-endothelium interaction, rendering it an attractive therapeutic target for acute and chronic inflammation. Using phage display, a Designed-Ankyrin-Repeat-Protein (DARPin) was selected as a novel binding protein targeting and blocking the αM I-domain, an activation-specific epitope of Mac-1. The activated Mac-1-specific DARPin F7 binds preferentially to activated monocytes, detects inflammation in critically ill patients, and inhibits monocyte and neutrophil function as an efficient new anti-inflammatory agent.

In this review, we will focus on possible extensions of the current use of PRRT and on new approaches which could further improve its treatment efficacy and safety.

We develop a nonlinear fibre-reinforced biomechanical model accounting for smooth muscle contraction and extracellular matrix strain-stiffening. Through numerical simulation, we describe the stresses and contractile responses of an airway within a PCLS of finite thickness, exposing the importance of smooth muscle contraction on the local stress state within the airway. We then consider two simplifying limits of the model (a membrane representation and an asymptotic reduction in the thin-PCLS-limit), that permit analytical progress. Comparison against numerical solution of the full problem shows that the asymptotic reduction successfully captures the key elements of the full model behaviour. The more tractable reduced model that we develop is suitable to be employed in investigations to elucidate the time-dependent feedback mechanisms linking airway mechanics and cytokine activation in asthma.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes avery wide range of disease severity from completely asymptomatic to fatal, and the reasons for that are not well understood; however, there are some data that show vitamin D may have aprotective effect.

To retrieve the vitamin D levels data, the authors analyzed the vitamin D European population data compiled by 2019 European Calcified Tissue Society (ECTS) statement on vitamin D status published in the European Journal of Endocrinology. For the data set to be used for analysis, only recently published data that included general adult population of both genders aged 40-65 years or wider and must have included the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency.

There were data sets from 10countries that fitted the criteria and were analyzed. Severe vitamin D deficiency was defined as 25(OH)D less than 25 nmol/L (10 ng/dL). Pearson correlation analysis between death rate per million of population from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and prevalence of severe vitamin D deficiency showed astrong correlation with r = 0.79, p = 0.007. Over time, correlation strengthened, and r coefficient asymptotically increased. After adjusting for countries' age structure and per capita health expenditures, multiple linear regression analysis showed that higher prevalence of severe vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased mortality. Each 1% increase in prevalence increased deaths by 55per million (95% confidence interval, CI 8-102), p = 0.03.

These contaminants are discharged mainly from industrial wastes, agricultural and household activities and domestic sewage. A total of 12 stations (2.5 to 3.5 km apart from each other) were selected for the study, covering the upstream and downstream areas of river Yamuna in Delhi. The investigated sites were evaluated for significant difference between upstream and downstream locations of river Yamuna in three different time periods (June, October, February). Metal contamination were measured in water, sediments (2 μm) and nearby agriculture soil of the river Yamuna, and found with high metal loads as compared with the international standards, chiefly in the downstream sites as the river flows through the Delhi stretch. The multivariate statistical analysis revealed spatial and temporal variations in the metal concentrations which suggest seasonal variation and common point source of some metals while different sources of other metals. The contamination of the river water and adjoining agriculture soils points towards possible entry of these metals into the food chain. The study indicates that considering the current status of metal pollution, the surface water is not in good conditions for use as drinking purpose because of the high concentrations of few potentially toxic metals. Our study recommends regular monitoring of toxic metals in Yamuna river water and sediments, strict ban on the domestic, agriculture and industrial waste disposal for the restoration of the river to its natural state.In 2018, an outbreak resulting in deaths of 28 breeding pigeons was reported north of Brisbane, Australia. The affected birds had runny nasal discharge and poor body condition. Two birds were submitted to Biosecurity Sciences Laboratory, Brisbane, for investigation. We have discovered a polyomavirus, tentatively named "Ursus americanus polyomavirus 1" (UaPyV1) in black bears (Ursus americanus). UaPyV1 was detectable in various tissues of six out of seven bears submitted for necropsy. Based on viral phylogenetic clustering and detection of the virus in multiple individuals, we suggest that black bears are the natural hosts for UaPyV1. In this albeit small group, there is no clear relationship between UaPyV1 infection and any specific disease.Porcine circovirus 2 (PCV-2) is the causative agent of porcine circovirus diseases (PCVD). A study was undertaken to determine whether PCV-2 was present in samples collected from commercial pigs (n = 46) and warthogs (n = 42) in Namibia between 2019 and 2020. Twenty-three of the collected samples were positive by PCR (13 from pigs and 10 from warthogs), and a phylogenetic analysis of ORF2 identified three genotypes (PCV-2b and PCV-2d in pigs and PCV-2c in warthogs). This is the first time that PCV-2 has been identified in warthogs and in Namibia. It is also the first report of PCV-2c in Africa.Here, we report the full-length genome sequence of a novel cogu-like virus identified in Brassica campestris L. ssp. Chinensis (B. campestris), an economically important vegetable in China. This virus, tentatively named "Brassica campestris chinensis coguvirus 1" (BCCoV1), has a bipartite genome that consists of two RNA molecules (RNA1 and RNA2). The negative-stranded (ns) RNA1 is 6757 nt in length, encoding the putative RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), and the ambisense RNA2 is 3061 nt long, encoding the putative movement protein (MP) and nucleocapsid protein (NP). A homology search of the RdRp, MP, and NP showed that they are closely related to five other recently discovered negative-stranded RNA (nsRNA) viruses infecting plants, belonging to the new genus Coguvirus. Phylogenetic analysis of the 252-kDa RdRp confirmed the classification of this virus, showing that BCCoV1 possibly belongs to the genus Coguvirus, family Phenuiviridae, order Bunyavirales. The present study improves our understanding of the viral diversity in B. campestris and the evolution of nsRNA viruses.In this study, the chemical and algicidal properties of the newly synthesized compound (2) were evaluated and its algal oxidative effects were determined in Arthrospira platensis and Chlorella vulgaris. First, we have reported on the synthesis and characterization of highly water-soluble copper (II) phthalocyanine (2), containing sodium 2-mercaptoethanesulfonate (2) substituents at the peripheral positions. Some spectroscopic techniques were used to characterize the new synthesized compound (2). In terms of biological properties, C. vulgaris were more tolerance to compound (2) than A. platensis depending to growth parameters. When SOD (Superoxide dismutase) activity significantly increased at 0.25 ppb and 1.5 ppb concentrations in A. platensis cultures, it increased at 6 ppb concentration in C. vulgaris cultures. GR (Glutathione reductase) activity decreased at 1 ppb and 1.5 ppb concentrations while APX (Ascorbate peroxidase) activity did not show a significant change at any concentrations in A. platensis cultures.
