Toto was founded in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also acclaimed studio players working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as lead vocalist. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.
In 1999, the band release Mindfields and begin an extensive tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe as a response to the band covering Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
