Beta-thalassemia major is a common inherited single-gene disorder. Thalassemic patients are at risk of changes in some important trace elements. To detect alteration of iron, copper, zinc, and calcium serum levels in beta-thalassemia major patients, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was used. This study was conducted on 40 beta-thalassemia major and 40 healthy young patients (age 12-18 years old; malefemale = 11). Venous blood samples were collected from both groups and analyzed for the serum levels of iron, calcium, zinc, and copper by exposing the samples to LIBS. The intensities of the tested elements were detected using the Kestrel Spec computer software and analyzed with an SPSS 25 program. BAY-1816032 price Thalassemic patients had significantly higher serum iron (p =  0.005) when compared with control. Also, thalassemic patients had significantly lower body weight and height as they were less than the 3rd percentile by 82.5% and p  less then  0.001. LIBS is a safe and efficient tool to detect alteration of some serum trace elements in beta-thalassemia patients.

To restore the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients who underwent jaw resection and reconstruction surgery, dental rehabilitation is an essential procedure and also one of the most challenging for oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Even though recent studies have reported the possibility and reliability of dental implant rehabilitation with the fibula free flap (FFF), clinical reports of long-term follow-up cases are scarce. We herein reported seven cases of FFF reconstruction and implant rehabilitation. We also discussed implant planning strategy and surgical techniques.

From 2012 to 2019, seven patients were treated with FFF reconstructive jaw surgery combined with dental implant installation and fabrication of implant-supported prostheses at Seoul National University Dental Hospital, Seoul, Korea. Patient characteristics and FFF treatment results were collected. Records of dental implants were analyzed clinically and radiologically.

Among the seven patients in this report, there were thre the FFF has great results regarding restoration of function (mastication, swallowing, and speaking), appearance, and overall HRQoL. Collaboration between surgeons and prosthodontists is essential for a satisfying outcome. The gram-positive bacterium, Streptomyces, is noticed for its ability to produce a wide array of pharmaceutically active compounds through secondary metabolism. To discover novel bioactive secondary metabolites and increase the production, Streptomyces species have been extensively studied for the past decades. Among the cellular components, RNA molecules play important roles as the messengers for gene expression and diverse regulations taking place at the RNA level. Thus, the analysis of RNA-level regulation is critical to understanding the regulation of Streptomyces' metabolism and secondary metabolite production. A dramatic advance in Streptomyces research was made recently, by exploiting high-throughput technology to systematically understand RNA levels. In this review, we describe the current status of the system-wide investigation of Streptomyces in terms of RNA, toward expansion of its genetic potential for secondary metabolite synthesis. The classically used nontargeted chemotherapeutic approach to pancreatic cancer has a dual drawback of suboptimal drug delivery at the target site and the systemic side effects produced by the unfettered exposure of the drug to healthy tissue. This study has the objective of developing novel poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (PETOX)-based long circulating liposomes loaded with gemcitabine and irinotecan for the treatment of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, with a juxtaposition to PEGylated and uncoated liposomes. A PETOX-cholesteryl chloroformate lipopolymer conjugate (PETOX-ChC) with a carbonate linkage was prepared and characterized by 1H NMR, FTIR, and DSC. Liposomes were prepared using the thin film hydration technique followed by freeze-thaw and membrane extrusion methods. Liposome characterization includes particle size determination, zeta potential determination using a zetameter, and structural elucidation using 31P NMR and cryo-TEM. The PETOXylated liposomes showed a particle size of 180.1 ± 2.2 nm and a zeta potential of - 33.63 ± 1.23 mV. The liposomal combination therapy of gemcitabine and irinotecan was found to have an IC50 value 39 times lower in comparison to the drug combination in solution, while the PEGylated and PETOXylated liposomes showed IC50 values 1.6 times lower and 2 times lower than that of uncoated liposomes, respectively, against Mia PaCa II pancreatic cancer cell line. The PEGylated and PETOXylated liposomes showed 4.1 and 5.4 times slower macrophagial uptake in vitro in comparison to the uncoated liposomes respectively. The PEGylated liposomes showed 11% higher in vitro macrophagial uptake in comparison to PETOXylated liposomes.Clinical applications of cell therapy and tissue regeneration under different conditions need a multiplicity of adult stem cell sources. Up to date, little is available on the comparative isolation, characterization, proliferation, rapid amplification, and osteogenic/adipogenic differentiation of rat mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from living bulge cells of the hair follicle (HF) and bone marrow (BM) from the same animal. This work hopes to use HF-MSCs as an additional adult stem cell source for research and application. After reaching 80% confluence, the cell counting, viability %, and yields of HF-MSCs and BM-MSCs were nearly similar. The viability % was 91.41 ± 2.98 and 93.11 ± 3.06 while the cells yield of initial seeding was 33.15 ± 2.76 and 34.22 ± 3.99 and of second passage was 28.76 ± 1.01 and 29.56 ± 3.11 for HF-MSCs and BM-MSCs respectively. Clusters of differentiation (CDs) analysis revealed that HF-MSCs were positively expressed CD34, CD73 and CD200 and negatively expressed CD45. BM-MSCs w. The present findings demonstrate that the HF-MSCs are very similar in most tested characteristics to BM-MSCs with the exception of differentiation. Additionally; no issues have been reported during the collection of HF-MSCs. Therefore, the HF may represent a suitable and accessible source for adult stem cells and can be considered an ideal cell source for adipogenesis research.
