To attract a mate, females of most moth species synthesize and emit sex pheromone from a specific gland in a behavior termed "calling". In a broad temporal sense, calling behavior and pheromone synthesis are synchronized through the overlap of their circadian rhythms. However, the limited amount of pheromone a female produces each day must be managed so that pheromone is emitted at a sufficient (to attract males) mass emission rate (MER) over the entire calling period, typically many hours. We are studying pheromone synthesis and emission in the moth Chloridea (formerly Heliothis) virescens (family Noctuidae). One way that female C. virescens manage pheromone over their calling period is by calling intermittently; the period between calling bouts allows females to replenish pheromone, and resume calling at high MERs. However, militating against replenishment is loss of pheromone through putative catabolism. In this paper, we examined three aspects pertaining to pheromone MER in C. virescens (i) the effect of adult feeding on calling behavior, (ii) the effect of certain behavioral/physical parameters on MER, and (iii) the relative loss (putative catabolism) of pheromone in retracted (non-calling) and everted (calling) glands. We found that (i) adult feeding increases calling duration, consistent with the known concomitant increase in pheromone production, (ii) various physical factors relating to the gland, including degree of eversion (surface area), orientation to airstream, and air velocity over the gland influence MER, and (iii) putative catabolism occurs in both retracted and everted glands, but substantially less pheromone is lost in the everted gland primarily because of the high MER when the gland is first everted. Together, these data demonstrate that, over the calling period, the efficient use of pheromone for emission by female C. virescens is dependent on the interaction among synthesis, storage, catabolism, and calling behavior.

Gout is the most common inflammatory arthritis, but was not considered in most COVID-19 and rheumatic diseases reports. Our aim was to describe changes in clinical data, treatment, function and quality of life for gout patients during COVID-19 pandemic.

Prospective, descriptive and analytical study of 101 consecutive gout (ACR/EULAR 2015) patients from our clinic evaluated during pandemic by phone call (n=52) or phone call + face-to-face (n=68) that accepted to participate. Included gout patients were males (95.8%), mean (SD) age 54.7 (10.7) years and disease duration 16.4 (9.8) years; 90% received allopurinol, 50% colchicine as prophylaxis and 25% suspended ≥ 1 medication. Comparison of pre-pan+, and two of them died.

We report our single-center experience with percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) and primary hemostasis disorders (HD).

Consecutive patients with primary HD who underwent a percutaneous LAAC were included. Baseline characteristics, procedural data, and clinical outcomes were prospectively collected and compared with the overall LAAC cohort without HD.

Oral anticoagulation constitutes a significant dilemma in this patient category as the risks of stroke and bleeding are difficult to balance. We sought to demonstrate the feasibility of left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) in patients with haemophilia and atrial fibrillation.

All patients with haemophilia treated with LAAO at Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark, were identified from a local prospective database comprising all consecutive LAAO procedures from 2010 up to November 2020. Based on review of the medical records, a retrospective descriptive analysis was performed.

Seven patients with haemophilia A and atrial fibrillation underwent LAAO after multidisciplinary conference. Peri-procedural coagulation management was guided by factor VIII activity and treated with repeated bolus administrations of recombinant factor VIII targeting an activity of 100%. The implantation was successful in all patients with only minor bleeding complications post-procedurally. Based on these experiences, a suggested regime has been formulated.

Mechanical strength is a crucial agronomic trait in rice (Oryza sativa), and brittle mutants are thought suitable materials to investigate the mechanism of cell wall formation. So far, almost all brittle mutants are recessive, and most of them are defected in multiple morphologies and/or grain yield, limiting their application in hybrid breeding and in rice straw recycling.

We identified a semi-dominant brittle mutant Brittle culm19 (Bc19) isolated from the japonica variety Nipponbare through chemical mutagenesis. The mutant showed the same apparent morphologies and grain yield to the wild type plant except for its weak mechanical strength. Its development of secondary cell wall in sclerenchyma cells was affected, along with reduced contents of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and sugars in culms and leaves. Positional cloning suggested that the Bc19 gene was allelic to OsCESA4, encoding one of the cellulose synthase A (CESA) catalytic subunits. In this mutant, a C-to-T substitution occurred in the codingn-straw dual-purpose hybrid rice breeding.

Bc19, a semi-dominant brittle mutant allele of gene OsCESA4, was identified using map-based cloning approach. The mutated protein of Bc19 possessing the P507S missense mutation behaved in a dosage-dependent semi-dominant manner. Functional dependency is a known determinant of surgical risk. To enhance our understanding of the relationship between dependency and adverse surgical outcomes, we studied how postoperative mortality following a surgical complication was impacted by preoperative functional dependency.

We explored a historical cohort of 6,483,387 surgical patients within the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS-NSQIP). All patients ≥ 18years old within the ACS-NSQIP from 2007 to 2017 were included.

There were 6,222,611 (96.5%) functionally independent, 176,308 (2.7%) partially dependent, and 47,428 (0.7%) totally dependent patients. Within 30days postoperatively, 57,652 (0.9%) independent, 15,075 (8.6%) partially dependent, and 10,168 (21.4%) totally dependent patients died. After adjusting for confounders, increasing functional dependency was associated with increased odds of mortality (Partially Dependent OR 1.72, 99% CI 1.66 to 1.77; Totally Dependent OR 2.26, 99% CI 2.15 to 2.37). Dependency also significantly impacted mortality following a complication; however, independent patients usually experienced much stronger increases in the odds of mortality. There were six complications not associated with increased odds of mortality. Model diagnostics show our model was able to distinguish between patients who did and did not suffer 30-day postoperative mortality nearly 96.7% of the time.

Within our cohort, dependent surgical patients had higher rates of comorbidities, complications, and odds of 30-day mortality. Preoperative functional status significantly impacted the level of postoperative mortality following a complication, but independent patients were most affected.
