Mortality rate of maintenance hemodialysis patients is known to be high. Cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) is an index reflecting the proper stiffness of the arterial tree from the origin of the aorta to the ankle. We aimed to clarify the utility of CAVI as a predictor of mortality in hemodialysis patients. The roles of age and nutritional conditions on survival were also examined.

Neuromuscular stimulation (NMES) has been shown to improve peripheral blood flow in healthy people. We investigated the effect of bilateral leg NMES on the symptoms of chronic venous disease.

Forty subjects were recruited from four groups healthy, superficial insufficiency, deep insufficiency, and deep obstruction. Haemodynamic venous measurements were taken from the right femoral vein with ultrasound, laser Doppler fluximetry from the left hand and foot. Devices were then worn for 4-6 hours per day, for 6 weeks. Haemodynamic measurements were repeated at week 6. Quality of life questionnaires were taken at week 0, 6 and 8.

The mean age was 48.7, BMI 28.6kg/m2, and maximum calf circumference 39.0 cm. Twenty-four subjects were men. NMES increased femoral vein peak velocity, TAMV and volume flow by 55%, 20%, 36% at 20 minutes (all p<0.05), which was enhanced at week 6 (PV and TAMV p<0.05). Mean increases in arm and leg fluximetry were 71% and 194% (both p<0.01). Leg swelling was reduced by mean 252.7 mL (13%, p<0.05) overall; 338.9 mL (16%, p<0.05) in venous disease. For those with venous pathology, scores for disease specific and generic quality of life questionnaires improved. Those with C4-6 disease benefitted the most, with improvements in VDS score of 1, AVVQ of 6, and SF-12 of 10.

NMES improves venous haemodynamic parameters in chronic venous disease, which is enhanced by regular use. NMES reduces leg oedema, improves blood supply to the skin of the foot, and may positively affect quality of life.

Several randomized clinical trials (RCTs) investigated the effects of the manual placental removal on hemorrhage or other hemorrhage-related complications compared with the spontaneous placental removal during cesarean section (CS), while the results remained controversial and were inconsistent. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to quantify the pooled effects of the methods of placental removal on hemorrhage during CS.

A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Heterogeneity was tested by



statistics and Q-statistic. The random-effects model or fixed-effects model were used to calculate the pooled effect for the included studies according to heterogeneity. And the term of standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was pooled and estimated the effects across all studies.

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is widely used as a treatment for knee osteoarthritis. Few studies have analysed the factors affecting the squatting ability of patients after TKA. The purpose of this study was to comprehensively analyse the factors affecting squatting ability after TKA and to determine which ones are important.

Three hundred primary TKA cases with a minimum 3-year follow-up were retrospectively analysed. All patients received a conventional posterior-stabilized TKA implant and underwent a standard perioperative care pathway. The patients were divided into two groups according to the squatting position and knee flexion angle while weight-bearing (Group I - inability to squat group, Group II - ability to squat group). Demographic, operative, and clinical data were collected. Radiographic assessment included joint line elevation, patellar position, posterior condylar offset (PCO), etc. Statistical analysis of the effect of all the above factors on squatting ability was performed.

This study aimed at investigating the correlation between estradiol and sleep apnea among women with major depressive disorders during the perimenopausal and postmenopausal periods.

A total of 84 perimenopausal and postmenopausal women diagnosed with depression, and who had been subjected to whole-night polysomnography (PSG) were retrospectively studied. They were assigned into two groups based on the presence of OSA (apnea-hypopnea index (AHI)≥5) (OSA vs non-OSA). The correlation between estradiol levels and apnea-hypopnea index were assessed by logistic regression models after adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI),apnea frequency and progesterone.

Among the 84 patients, 45.23% had OSA. Estradiol levels were significantly elevated in non-OSA than in OSA patients (

<0.05). Univariate analysis revealed that elevated estradiol levels are associated with reduced odds of OSA (odds ratio [OR] 0.92, 95% confidence interval epressed perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. COVID-19 is a complex multisystem disease comprising multiple organ dysfunctions including neurologic manifestations. Some COVID-19 patients may present neurologic symptoms as the initial presentations of the disease.

We aim at investigating the frequency and the predictors of neurological manifestations in patients with confirmed COVID-19.

A retrospective cross-sectional single-center study analyzed COVID-19 positive patients with neurological manifestations from March to June 2020, in Aswan Governorate, Egypt. Demographic data, clinical, radiological and laboratory findings, comorbidities, and treatments were collected and analyzed.

Out of the 905 confirmed COVID-19 patients; 422 patients (46.6%) had neurological manifestations and fulfilled the study inclusion criteria, 223 patients (52.8%) had central neurological disorders (CNS), 107 (25.4%) had peripheral neurological disorders (PNS), and 92 (21.8%) patients had non-specific neurological disorders. Age >50 years, diabetes mellitus, CORAD> III and smoking were predictors for neurological system affection.
