Based on > 700 measurements, our data showed that solute transport to lysimeters was similar-regardless of antibiotic affinity for soil-when preferential flow represented less than 15% of the total water flow. When preferential flow exceeded 15%, however, concentrations were higher for compounds with relatively low affinity for soil. We provide evidence that (1) bypassing water flow can select for compounds that are more easily released from the soil matrix, and (2) this phenomenon becomes more evident as the magnitude of preferential flow increases. We argue that considering the natural spectrum preferential flow as an explanatory variable to gauge the influence of soil matrix-solute interactions may improve parsimonious transport models.Urban brownfield sites are abandoned industrial land and their redevelopment may be affected by environmental pollution, as the latter may pose health risks for residents. In this study, six heavy metals (Pb, As, Cr, Zn, Ni, and Cu) were examined from 87 soil samples extracted from four land use types (industrial area, residential/commercial area, traffic area, and agricultural area) in the Mianyang thermal power plant area, Sichuan Province, China. The soil contamination and environmental risk were evaluated using the single factor index, geo-accumulation index and Human Health Risk Evaluation. ArcGIS was used to map out the spatial distribution of heavy metal concentrations and environmental risk. The results of these analyses have indicated that different land use types have significant effects on the heavy metal contamination of soil. There are 10 non-carcinogenic risk areas of heavy metals in industrial land, while in the other three types there are 9 non-carcinogenic risk areas of heavy metals. Under the brownfield renewal planning, the present study scheme provides an effective method of discernment for ecological remediation of soil heavy metals. In addition, it can aid brownfield in finding different remediation strategies with economic benefits for different risk levels of human health.During the Last Glacial Maximum, a small band of Siberians entered the Beringian corridor, where they persisted, isolated from gene flow, for several thousand years before expansion into the Americas. The ecological features of the Beringian environment, coupled with an extended period of isolation at small population size, would have provided evolutionary opportunity for novel genetic variation to arise as both rare standing variants and new mutations were driven to high frequency through both neutral and directed processes. Here we perform a full genome investigation of Native American populations in the Thousand Genomes Project Phase 3 to identify unique high frequency alleles that can be dated to an origin in Beringia. Our analyses demonstrate that descendant populations of Native Americans harbor 20,424 such variants, which is on a scale comparable only to Africa and the Out of Africa bottleneck. This is consistent with simulations of a serial founder effects model. Tests for selection reveal that some of these Beringian variants were likely driven to high frequency by adaptive processes, and bioinformatic analyses suggest possible phenotypic pathways that were under selection during the Beringian Isolation period. Specifically, pathways related to cardiac processes and melanocyte function appear to be enriched for selected Beringian variants.Growing evidence has demonstrated the functional relevance of long intergenic noncoding RNAs (lincRNAs) to tumorigenesis and immune response. However, immune-related lincRNAs and their value in predicting the clinical outcomes of patients with liver cancer remain largely unexplored. Herein, we utilized the strategy of iterative gene pairing to construct a tumor-specific immune-related lincRNA pairs signature (IRLPS), which did not require specific expression levels, as an indicator of patient outcomes. The 18-IRLPS we developed was associated with overall survival, tumor progression, and recurrence in liver cancer patients. Multivariate analysis revealed that the risk model was an independent predictive factor. A high IRLPS risk was correlated suppressive immune microenvironment, and IRLPS-high patients might benefit more from CD276 blockade or TMIGD2 agonist. selleck products Patients in the high-risk group were associated with elevated tumor mutation, increased sensitivity to dopamine receptor antagonists, cisplatin, doxorubicin, and mitomycin but more resistance to vinblastine. Mechanistically, IRLPS high scores might lead to poor prognosis by promoting cell proliferation and metabolic reprogramming. The prognostic significance of the 18-IRLPS was confirmed in independent cancer datasets. These findings highlighted the robust predictive performances of the 18-IRLPS for prognosis and personalized treatment.Cataract is the leading cause of blindness worldwide, and advanced cataract techniques such as femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) have been commercially available. Corneal refractive surgery (CRS) is one of the most popular surgeries for the correction of refractive errors. CRS changes the cornea not only anatomically but also pathophysiologically. However, there has been no clinical research analyzing the refractive and safety outcomes of FLACS after CRS. The aim of this retrospective chart review and comparative study is to evaluate the effect and safety of FLACS after CRS comparing with conventional PCS. Participants with a previous CRS history who underwent FLACS or conventional PCS were included in this study. The visual outcomes and the refractive outcomes including refractive, corneal, and ocular residual astigmatism were compared. The safety outcomes were then studied intraoperatively and postoperatively. A total of 102 patients with age-related cataract were enrolled. At 3 months postoperatively, UCVA, BCVA, and predictive error were not significantly different between the FLACS and conventional PCS groups. Reduction of refractive astigmatism was higher in FLACS. Postoperative ORA was significant lower in FLACS. Reduction of ORA was higher in FLACS. The intraoperative and postoperative complications were also not significantly different between the two groups. FLACS could effectively change refractive astigmatism and ORA; without more complications than conventional PCS. FLACS' competitive edge in postoperative ORA may provide better visual quality than conventional PCS in patients with a previous history of CRS.Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites can potentially be used in electrochemical devices, such as batteries and fuel cells. In this study, the structure and phase transition temperatures of the organic-inorganic material [NH3(CH2)5NH3]CdCl4 crystal were confirmed by X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. From the nuclear magnetic resonance results, the crystallographic configurations of 1H, 13C, and 14N in the cation changed at temperatures close to TC1 (336 K), whereas that of 113Cd in the anion shows significant changes at temperatures close to TC1 and TC2 (417 K). The activation energy, Ea, values for 1H and 13C obtained from the spin-lattice relaxation time, T1ρ, below and above TC1 were evaluated, where the Ea value for 13C was more flexible at low temperatures than at high temperatures. In addition, the effect on molecular motion was effective at high temperatures. The phase transition at 336 K was associated with the change in the N-H···Cl bond due to the change in the coordination geometry of Cl around Cd in the CdCl6 anion. On the other hand, the phase transition at 417 K was related to the ferroelastic phase transition attributed to the twin domains.Intersubband (intraband) transitions allow absorption of photons in the infrared spectral regime, which is essential for IR-photodetector and optical communication applications. Among various technologies, nanodisks embedded in nanowires offer a unique opportunity to be utilized in intraband devices due to the ease of tuning the fundamental parameters such as strain distribution, band energy, and confinement of the active region. Here, we show the transverse electric polarized intraband absorption using InGaN/GaN nanodisks cladded by AlGaN. Fourier transform infrared reflection (FTIR) measurement confirms absorption of normal incident in-plane transverse electric polarized photons in the mid-IR regime (wavelength of ~ 15 μm) at room temperature. The momentum matrix of the nanodisk energy states indicates electron transition from the ground state s into the px or py orbital-like excited states. Furthermore, the absorption characteristics depending on the indium composition and nanowire diameter exhibits tunability of the intraband absorption spectra within the nanodisks. We believe nanodisks embedded nanowires is a promising technology for achieving tunable detection of photons in the IR spectrum. The intervention at the stage of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is promising for preventing Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study aims to search for the optimal machine learning (ML) model to classify early and late MCI (EMCI and LMCI) subtypes using multimodal MRI data. First, the tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) analyses showed LMCI-related white matter changes in the Corpus Callosum. The ROI-based tractography addressed the connected cortical areas by affected callosal fibers. We then prepared two feature subsets for ML by measuring resting-state functional connectivity (TBSS-RSFC method) and graph theory metrics (TBSS-Graph method) in these cortical areas, respectively. We also prepared feature subsets of diffusion parameters in the regions of LMCI-related white matter alterations detected by TBSS analyses. Using these feature subsets, we trained and tested multiple ML models for EMCI/LMCI classification with cross-validation. Our results showed the ensemble ML model (AdaBoost) with feature subset of diffusion parameters achieved better performance of mean accuracy 70%. The useful brain regions for classification were those, including frontal, parietal lobe, Corpus Callosum, cingulate regions, insula, and thalamus regions. Our findings indicated the optimal ML model using diffusion parameters might be effective to distinguish LMCI from EMCI subjects at the prodromal stage of AD.The concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in aerosol were measured in Shinjuku, which is central Tokyo, Japan, for 10 years from 2007 to 2016. The effects of changes in emission sources and their degradation by reaction with ozone were assessed in this study. There was no significant increasing or decreasing trend of the PAH concentrations during 10 years (P > 0.05). The average selected seven the PAH concentrations (0.88 ng m-3) during 10 years was lower than those in New York and Paris. However, the trend of ozone concentrations is increasing in central Tokyo. This inconsistency raises a question. Did the fact that the ozone concentration was higher than the PAH concentrations promote PAH degradation? To apportion the PAH sources, we used PAH concentration profiles and positive matrix factorization analysis. The contribution of vehicle emissions to the PAHs ranged from 40 to 80%. Ozone concentrations increased by 3.70%/year during 10 years. The theoretical degradation rates of PAHs by ozone, which were calculated using a pseudo-first-order rate equation, suggested that the lifetimes of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) decreased by 1 min from 2007 to 2016.
