Importantly, WGDs do not result in the creation of miRNA novelty, nor do WGDs correlate to increases in complexity. Instead, it is the number of miRNA seed sequences in the genome itself that not only better correlate to instances in complexification, but also mechanistically explain why complexity increases when new miRNA families are established.
Existing cross-sectional observational studies indicate that patients with multiple myeloma experience negative physical and psychological symptoms and low health-related quality of life. The study aim was to determine symptom prevalence, health-related quality of life and symptoms associated with health-related quality of life in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma.
This multicenter longitudinal cohort study was conducted in four hospitals in Japan. Patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma were asked to report their symptom intensity and health-related quality of life using validated questionnaires at three points at diagnosis (T1), 1month (T2) and 12months after diagnosis (T3). Symptoms associated with health-related quality of life were explored using a mixed-effects model.
A total of 106 patients completed the assessment at T1. The symptoms more than 30% of patients reported were pain, disturbed sleep and distress at T1, pain, dry mouth, disturbed sleep and fatigue at T2, fatigue, numbness of tingling and pain and numbness or tingling at T3. Pain and depression were significantly associated with health-related quality of life negatively.
The finding suggests that more than 30% of multiple myeloma patients suffered from pain and various symptoms and they received suboptimal palliative care within a year after starting initial chemotherapy. Pain and depression should be the main targets of interventions to improve health-related quality of life in this population.

A total of 144 growing pigs (initial weight 28.2 ± 1.9 kg) were assigned to 9 treatments in a randomized complete block design with 2 blocks, 2 pigs per pen, and 8 replicate pens per treatment. The 9 diets were formulated in a 3 × 3 factorial with 3 levels of dietary Leu (101%, 200%, or 299% standardized ileal digestible [SID] LeuLys), and 3 levels of dietary Trp (18%, 23%, or 28% SID TrpLys). A basal diet that met requirements for SID Leu and SID Trp was formulated and 8 additional diets were formulated by adding crystalline L-Leu and (or) L-Trp to the basal diet. Individual pig weights were recorded at the beginning of the experiment and at the conclusion of the 21-d experiment. On the last day of the experiment, 1 pig per pen was sacrificed, and blood and hypot plasma concentration of Trp was greater if Leu level was at 101% SID LeuLys ratio than at 299% SID LeuLys ratio (interaction, P less then 0.05). In conclusion, increased dietary Leu reduced ADG, ADFI, and hypothalamic serotonin concentration, and influenced metabolism of several indispensable amino acids, but Trp supplementation partly overcame the negative effect of excess Leu. This demonstrates the importance of Trp in regulation of hypothalamic serotonin, and therefore, feed intake of pigs.Essential oils (EOs) produced by plants in the Lamiaceae family may provide new insecticidal molecules. Novel control compounds are needed to control Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura), a severe economic invasive pest of thin-skinned fruit crops. Thus, we characterized the main compounds of EOs from three rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis ecotypes (ECOs) and evaluated their toxicity to D. suzukii adults, deterrence of oviposition behavior, and histological alterations in larvae. Additionally, we analyzed the lethal and sublethal effect on the pupal parasitoid Trichopria anastrephae. The main compounds identified in the R. officinalis ECOs were α-pinene, camphor and 1,8-cineole. In bioassays via topical application or ingestion, ECOs and their major compounds showed high toxicity on D. suzukii adults and a lower concentration could kill 50% and 90% of flies compared to spinetoram. The dry residues of a-pinene, 1,8-cineole, and camphor provided a repellent effect by reducing D. suzukii oviposition by ~47% compared to untreated fruit. Histological sections of 3rd instar larval D. suzukii posttreatment revealed damage to the fat body, Malpighian tubules, brain, salivary gland, and midgut, which contributed to high larval and pupal mortality. CDK and cancer Survival and parasitism by adult T. anastrephae were not affected. Thus, R. officinalis EO and their compounds have potential for developing novel insecticides to manage D. suzukii.Protein Data Bank (PDB), jointly founded in 1971 by Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA, and the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre, UK, is the single global archive of experimentally determined biological macromolecular structures. PDB deposition is mandatory for publication in most scientific journals, which means 'no PDB deposition, no structural publication'. The current PDB archive contains more than 180,000 entries and includes many structures from Asian institutions. The first protein structure from Japan was that of cytochrome c determined by Prof Masao Kakudo's group at the Institute for Protein Research, Osaka University, in 1971 at a resolution of 4 Å, and a subsequent atomic structure at 2.3 Å resolution was deposited to PDB in 1976 as the 1st Asian and 21st entry of the entire PDB archive. Since then, 317 protein structures whose primary citation was the Journal of Biochemistry (J. Biochem.) have been deposited to PDB. Based on this long history between PDB and J. Biochem., a statistical analysis of all structural reports in J. Biochem. has been carried out using the relational database system at PDBj (https//pdbj.org) and reviewed the yearly distribution, resolution, quality of structure, type of target protein, number of citations and comparison against other major journals.Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) metrics are highly sensitive to microstructural brain alterations and are potentially useful imaging biomarkers for underlying neuropathologic changes after experimental and human traumatic brain injury (TBI). As potential imaging biomarkers require direct correlation with neuropathologic alterations for validation and interpretation, this study systematically examined neuropathologic abnormalities underlying alterations in DTI metrics in the hippocampus and cortex following controlled cortical impact (CCI) in rats. Ex vivo DTI metrics were directly compared with a comprehensive histologic battery for neurodegeneration, microgliosis, astrocytosis, and mossy fiber sprouting by Timm histochemistry at carefully matched locations immediately, 48 hours, and 4 weeks after injury. DTI abnormalities corresponded to spatially overlapping but temporally distinct neuropathologic alterations representing an aggregate measure of dynamic tissue damage and reorganization. Prominent DTI alterations of were observed for both the immediate and acute intervals after injury and associated with neurodegeneration and inflammation. In the chronic period, diffusion tensor orientation in the hilus of the dentate gyrus became prominently abnormal and was identified as a reliable structural biomarker for mossy fiber sprouting after CCI in rats, suggesting potential application as a biomarker to follow secondary progression in experimental and human TBI.
Male sex is a major risk factor for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) but few studies have addressed associations between sex hormone levels and AAA.
To describe the associations between serum sex steroids and early, screening-detected AAA in men.
We validated a high-sensitivity liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry assay for comprehensive serum sex hormone profiling. This assay was then employed in a case-control study including 147 men with AAA (infrarenal aorta ≥30mm) and 251 AAA-free controls recruited at the general population-based ultrasound screening for AAA in 65-year-old Swedish men.
Associations between dehydroepiandrosterone, progesterone, 17α-hydroxyprogesterone, androstenedione, estrone, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, and estradiol and AAA presence.
Dehydroepiandrosterone, progesterone, 17α-hydroxyprogesterone, testosterone, and estradiol, but not the other hormones, were lower in men with AAA. In models with adjustments for known AAA risk factors and comorbidity, only progotective in human AAA.
A 25mg dapivirine vaginal ring has been demonstrated to reduce risk of HIV acquisition in nonpregnant adult women. In this secondary analysis of studies conducted in US adolescent, lactating, and postmenopausal females, vaginal microbiota was assessed prior to and after ring use, and between dapivirine and placebo ring users.
Vaginal fluid swabs were collected before and after product use for the evaluation of microbiota using Nugent's criteria, quantitative culture, and qPCR.
Vaginal ring use did not impact bacterial vaginosis prevalence among the three populations and was associated with minimal shifts in microbiota. Adolescents in both arms demonstrated an increased prevalence of Lactobacillus crispatus and a decrease in quantity of Megasphaera lornae. Postmenopausal active and placebo ring users demonstrated an increased prevalence of lactobacilli and non-albicans yeast while dapivirine ring users demonstrated an increased prevalence of Candida albicans, and increased quantity of Group B Streptococcus (GBS) and non-albicans yeasts. Prevotella species were increased in lactating women while P. timonensis increased in prevalence and concentration among adolescent and postmenopausal women and P. bivia increased in prevalence among adolescent dapivirine ring users.
Dapivirine vaginal ring use was associated with minimal changes in the vaginal microbiota that are likely not clinically significant.

This systematic review assessed and compared the efficacy of marginal resection to wide resection in patients with atypical lipomatous tumours (ALT) by evaluating the local recurrence rates, overall survival and adverse event rates.
We evaluated studies published between 1 January 1990 and 31 January 2019. The risks of bias in the selected studies were analyzed using the Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias Tool. The quality of the evidence was evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach.
Three case-control studies and three case series studies were identified. A meta-analysis was performed of six studies to evaluate the local recurrence rate after resection. Comparison of marginal and wide resections showed that the local recurrence rate was not significantly higher in the marginal resection group (14.2 and 1.4%, odds ratio 2.88, 95% confidence interval 0.99-8.33, P=0.05). We observed no difference in overall survival. In one study, the rates of adverse events were 14.
