An optimal diet for lowering the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is still to be defined, but may comprise of nutrient intakes, dietary patterns, diet quality, and eating frequency. This study was designed to investigate the contribution of diet in developing GDM in a comprehensive way.

The dietary intake of overweight or obese women, a risk group for GDM (n = 351), was assessed using 3-day food diaries and diet quality questionnaires in early pregnancy. Eating frequency and nutrient intakes were calculated, and dietary patterns identified using principal component analysis. The inflammatory potential of the diet was determined by calculating the dietary inflammatory index (DII

) and energy-adjusted DII (E-DII™). GDM was diagnosed with an oral glucose tolerance test at 24-28 gestational weeks.

Higher adherence to 'healthier dietary pattern' characterized by consumptions of vegetables and rye bread associated with a reduced risk of GDM (adjusted OR 0.27, 95% CI 0.11-0.70). Higher E-DII score, indicating pro-inflammatory diet, was associated with a 27% higher risk of GDM (adjusted OR 1.27; 95% CI 1.08-1.49) for each E-DII point. In the evaluation of nutrient intakes, total fat, saturated fatty acids (SFAs), and transfatty acids were higher and fiber lower in women developing GDM compared to women not developing GDM (all p < 0.05). Intakes of total fat, SFAs, and trans fatty acids were also significant predictors for GDM (all p < 0.05).

The results emphasize the importance of an overall healthy diet and limitation of foods with SFAs, and other nutrients with a high inflammatory potential in reducing the risk of GDM.

Large-scale whole-genome sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 genome since its identification in late 2019 has identified many sequence changes and the emergence of novel strains, each described by co-segregation of a particular set of sequence variations. Variants designated G, alpha (B.1.1.7), beta (B.1.351), gamma (P.1), and delta (B.1.617.2) are important lineages that emerged sequentially and are considered variants of concern. A notable feature of the last four, each of which ultimately evolved from clade G, is the large number (≥ 20) of co-segregating sequence variations associated with them. Several variations are in the spike gene, and some variations are shared among or between strains. Meanwhile, observation of recurrent infections with the same or different SARS-CoV-2 lineages has raised concerns about the duration of the immune responses induced by the initial infection or the vaccine that was administered. The optimal pancreaticogastrostomy (PG) method for reducing pancreatic fistula (PF) incidence remains unclear. This retrospective review aimed to evaluate the clinical impact of the "twin U-stitch method" and compared it with the conventional invagination method.

Data of 183 consecutive patients who underwent PG after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) between January 2015 and November 2020 were evaluated. PF incidence was compared between patients who experienced twin U-stitch PG (twin U-stitch group) and those who experienced conventional invagination PG (conventional PG group).

The twin U-stitch and conventional PG methods were performed in 97 and 86 patients, respectively. The time required for twin U-stitch PG was shorter than conventional PG (9.3 min vs 20.0 min, P < 0.001). The twin U-stitch group showed a lower incidence of PF than the conventional PG group (8% vs. 19%, P = 0.038). Multivariate analysis confirmed that twin U-stitch PG was significantly correlated with a decreased risk of PF (odds ratio, 0.23; P = 0.006), independent of the texture of the pancreas. Subgroup analysis of patients with soft-textured pancreas showed that the median drain amylase levels in the twin U-stitch group on postoperative days (POD) 1 and 3 were significantly lower than those in the conventional PG group (POD 1 1,335 vs. 5,991 U/L, P < 0.001; POD 3 212 vs. 518, P = 0.001).

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of exogenous 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) application on the morphology, photosynthetic characteristics, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, photosynthetic enzymes activities, and endogenous hormone content of mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) leaves under shading stress environment. Two mung bean cultivars, Xilv 1 and Yulv 1, were tested. The results showed that all of the investigated data were significantly affected by shading stress; however, foliar application of EBR increased the net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, and decreased intercellular CO2 concentration of mung bean leaves under shading condition. Increased photosynthetic capacity in EBR-treated leaves was accompanied by improvement in higher photosynthetic enzymes activities. EBR-treated leaves exhibited more quantum yield of PSII electron transport and efficiency of energy capture than the control, which was mainly due to clearer leaf anatomical structure such as palisade tissues and spongy tissues, further resulting in altered plant morphological characteristics. Moreover, the treatment with EBL regulated the endogenous hormone content, including the decreased gibberellins and increased brassinolide, although to different levels. Combined with the morphological and physiological responses, we concluded that exogenous EBR treatment is beneficial to enhancing plant tolerance to shading stress and mitigating injure from weak light. The modifications of the physiological metabolism through EBR application may be a potential strategy to weaken shading stress in the future sustainable agricultural production.This study compared the process of bone remodeling using spherical porous β-tricalcium phosphate (SPTCP) and unidirectional porous β-tricalcium phosphate (UDPTCP) by quantitative computed tomography (CT) analysis. We retrospectively analyzed the data of 16 patients (4 men, 12 women; age, 43-78 years) who underwent medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOWHTO) and were followed up for 1 year postoperatively. Nine patients used SPTCP spacers and seven patients used UDPTCP spacers. CT was performed at 1 week, 6 months, and 1 year postoperatively. CT attenuation values were measured at three sites on the axial slice and sagittal slice, i.e., the superior, center, and inferior sites and the lateral, center, and medial sites for UDPTCP and SPTCP, respectively. CT attenuation values were lower for UDPTCP than for SPTCP in all sites at 6 months and 1 year postoperatively (p  less then  0.05). CT attenuation values decreased in the superior and inferior sites for UDPTCP (p  less then  0.05), and CT attenuation values decreased in the lateral site for both SPTCP and UDPTCP (p  less then  0.05). Cell viability, nitrite output and mRNA expression changes of genes associated with our target (Sstr4), inflammation (Tnf-α, Il-6, Il-1β, inos), anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant actions (Il-10, Catalase), and mediators of Aβ binding/phagocytosis (Msr1, Cd33, Trem1, Trem2) were measured. At 6 h SMI showed no effect across all conditions. At 24 h SMI (10 and 1000 nM) upregulated Sstr4 expression under inflammatory and non-inflammatory conditions. At 24 h SMI downregulated expression of the inflammatory cytokines Tnf-α (1000 nM within all LPS concentrations) and Il-6 (10 nM within 0 and 10 ng/ml LPS). At 24 h 10 nM SMI upregulated Il-10, while 1000 nM upregulated Catalase under inflammatory and non-inflammatory conditions. At 24 h Msr1 and Cd33 were upregulated by 1000 nM SMI under non-inflammatory conditions, while Trem1 was downregulated by 10 and 1000 nM SMI under mildly inflammatory and non-inflammatory conditions. These results show that SMI had concentration and time-dependent effects on mRNA expression of genes associated with different states of microglial activation. Special attention is paid to structure-function relationships arising from the hierarchical organization, which is a prominent feature of the primate visual system. Recent evidence supports the existence of a hierarchical organization in rodents that contains levels that are poorly resolved relative to those observed in primates. This shallowness of the hierarchy indicates that the mouse visual system incorporates abundant non-hierarchical processing.
