In all species, splenic strips constricted in response to both cholinergic (carbachol) and adrenergic (adrenaline) agonists. Surprisingly, in the two species of icefish, the spleen responded with similar sensitivity to red-blooded species, despite contraction being of little obvious benefit for releasing RBCs into the circulation. Although the icefish lineage lost functional haemoglobin before diversifying over the past 7.8-4.8 millions of years, they retain the capacity to contract the spleen, likely as a vestige inherited from their red-blooded ancestors.Species distribution models (SDMs) estimate habitat suitability for species in geographic space. They are extensively used in conservation under the assumption that there is a positive relationship between habitat suitability and species success and stability. Given the difficulties in obtaining demographic data across a species' range, this assumption is rarely tested. Here we provide a range-wide test of this relationship for the eastern subspecies of purple martin Progne subis subis. We build a well-supported SDM for the breeding range of the purple martin, and pair it with an unparalleled demographic dataset of nest success and local and regional abundance data for the species to test the proposed link between habitat suitability and fecundity and demography. We find a positive relationship between regional abundance and habitat suitability but no relationship between local abundance or fecundity and habitat suitability. Our data suggest that local success is driven largely by biotic and stochastic factors and raise the possibility that purple martins are experiencing a time lag in their distribution. More broadly our results call for caution in how we interpret SDMs and do not support the assumption that areas of high habitat suitability are the best areas for species persistence.

Advanced age is considered an adverse factor in endometrial cancers but may be a surrogate for other conditions that impact outcomes. The study objective was to assess the association of age with endometrial cancer features, treatment and prognosis.

In this multicenter cohort study, consecutive women with endometrial cancer treated at 10 Israeli institutions between 2000 and 2014 were accrued in an assimilated database. Postmenopausal women were stratified into age groups with a cut-off of 80. Clinical, pathological and treatment data were compared using t test or Mann-Whitney test for continuous variables, and Chi-square Test or Fisher's Exact test for categorical variables. Main outcome measures included disease recurrence and disease-specific and overall survival; these were plotted using the Kaplan-Meier method and compared using the log-rank test. The association between age and recurrence and survival, adjusted for other clinical and pathological factors, was assessed using multivariable Cox regressant treatment, and worse outcomes. On multivariable analysis, age remains an independent prognosticator in this population. This study showed that nodal tumour-stroma ratio (NTSR) is an independent prognostic factor for overall and disease-free survival of patients with gastric cancer. Both relative stroma-rich primary tumour-stroma ratio (PTSR) and NTSR were independent negative prognostic factors for overall survival in gastric cancer. This study supports assessment of tumour-stroma ratio in the routine pathological diagnosis of gastric cancer. validated in node-positive disease. This study investigates the relationship between collective motion and propulsion of bacterial consortia and their biopolymer production efficiency. Rheological tests were conducted for suspensions of two different methanotrophic bacterial consortia obtained after enrichment of sediment samples from mangrove sites in Brazil. We considered the linear viscoelasticity region and analyzed the values of storage and loss moduli as functions of days of cultivation, for different values of the volume fraction. The suspensions' rheological behaviors reflected the bacterial growth stage. We found that the formation of structures over time in some types of consortia can hinder the movement of bacteria in the search for nutrients. The change in complex viscosity of the two consortia followed a different and rich behavior that appears to be closely related to their capacity to capture methane. Our analysis showed a possible correlation between collective motion, viscosity reduction, and biopolymer production. The pieces of evidence from this study suggest that the efficiency of bacterial motion is directly related to biopolymer production, and this could facilitate the process of identifying the best consortium of biopolymer producing bacteria.

Atopic eczema is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease. Research suggests an association between atopic eczema and obesity, with inconsistent evidence from European populations.

To explore the association between diagnosed atopic eczema and being overweight or obese, and whether increased atopic eczema severity was associated with higher body mass index.

We undertook a cross-sectional analysis within a cohort of adults (matched by age, sex and general practice) with and without a diagnosis of atopic eczema. We used primary care (Clinical Practice Research Datalink Gold) and linked hospital admissions data (1998-2016). We used conditional logistic regression to compare the odds of being overweight or obese (adjusting for confounders and potential mediators) in those with atopic eczema (mild, moderate and severe, and all eczema) vs. those without.

We identified 441746 people with atopic eczema, matched to 1849722 without. People with atopic eczema had slightly higher odds of being overweight or obegs are largely reassuring for this prevalent patient group who may already have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The temperature sensitivity of vaccines and therapeutic proteins forces the distribution of life-saving treatments to rely heavily on the temperature-controlled (usually 2-8°C) supply and distribution network known as the cold chain. Here, using avidin as a model, we demonstrate how surface engineering could significantly increase the thermal stability of therapeutic proteins. A combination of spectroscopic (Fourier transform infrared, circular dichroism, and ultraviolet-visible) and scattering techniques (dynamic light scattering, small-angle, and wide-angle X-ray scattering) were deployed to probe the activity, structure, and stability of the model protein. Temperature-dependent synchrotron radiation circular dichroism spectroscopy was used to demonstrate a significant increase in thermal stability, with a half denaturation temperature of 139.0°C and reversible unfolding with modified avidin returning to a 90% folded state when heated to temperatures below 100°C. Accelerated aging studies revealed that modified avidin retained its secondary structure after storage at 40°C for 56 days, equivalent to 160 days at 25°C. Furthermore, binding studies with multiple ligands revealed that the binding site remained functional after modification. As a result, this approach has potential as a storage technology for therapeutic proteins and the elimination of the cold chain, enabling the dissemination of life-saving vaccines worldwide. The article "Chi3l1 regulates APAP-induced liver injury by promoting macrophage infiltration, by Y.
